atx_newbie Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 This thread reminds me of exactly why I love college football. The trash talk and the process is so much more fascinating than any other sport. Please don't change to a playoff system, because it would take away so much from that. So just to throw in my $.02... I think LSU needs to be given some serious respect this year, and I'm not just saying that as a fan. Jordan Jefferson showed amazing capability in the Chic-Fil-A Bowl, Russell Shepherd is big and talented enough to contribute right away, though I'm not sure if he's going to redshirt (Catt or Sam, any input on that?), and like Catt said earlier, Rahim Alem is beast at DE. He reminds me a lot of Brian Orakpo from last year's Longhorns. Add in an almost completely returned defense and many of the secondary problems from last year should be taken care of. That being said, there are a lot of other serious competitors out there. Not many big stars left: Tebow, Bradford, McCoy, and many others are all coming back. Georgia and Tex Tech are the only teams that I expect to be down from last year. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 16, 2009 Super User Posted July 16, 2009 Charles Scott, Keiland Williams and Richard Murphy will be the running backs. Freshman Michael Ford may see some playing time if needed. So far. All we can do is wait to see what happens. Quote
Quitlimpin Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Forget the computers, If a team goes undefeated in the big 12 that team will get to play for the big bowl game. And that team will be the Longhorns. The secondary has a little more expierience now (Gideon who dropped the easiest int ever) and I honestley don't think the dude that let what's his face from Tx Tech score when he thought he pushed him out of bounds will let that happen again. I am 100% positive that UT will go for the national title. I am going to take a stab and guess 2 teams they will play against. Florida or LSU Still makes me sick to my stomach. I was already up dancing a jig around the living room....... Kept us from a probable NC game. Gideon is gonna have to work hard to keep his starting job. He's being pushed by Brewster, Wells, Scott and others. UT is loaded with good, young safeties. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 16, 2009 Super User Posted July 16, 2009 Matt you're starting to sound like a Notre Dame Fan, history is just that 3 championships in a row is not a fluke, its total domination and it's not just LSU or the Gators, the are 3 or 4 more teams that will rattle some cages this year. How as fans do y'all put up with the coaches? Bob Stoops is what now 0/5 in bowl game; out played by Gators and Tigers from the SEC, kicked by Trojans, and embarrassed by Boise State and West Virginia. Jim Tressel back to back stomping by the SEC, oh by the way the Ohio State Buckeyes are 0/9 vs the SEC in bowl games. Quote
Daniel A. Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 LSU has the potential to add another crystal football to the trophy case. The defense will give everyone fits, and the offense really got it together with Jefferson taking the snaps. I can't wait for the season to start. Quote

As I recall, a 4th in the SEC Ole Miss team beat Texas Tech last year in the Cotton Bowl. Who did that TT team beat last year? Hmmm...Oh yeah! Texas I know the transitive property doesn't work in football, but I'm just saying.... Quote

bigtimfish Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I think anyone is crazy to vote against Florida this year..... The SEC is going to be outrageously tough again this year. Toughest conference in the land. Quit complaining about out of conference schedules! When you play guys as tough as this-week in and week out-you need a break! War Eagle! I will 110% DISAGREE with you on this one.Big 12 is it. Quote

Super User Matt Fly Posted July 17, 2009 Super User Posted July 17, 2009 How does JV college ball even deserve to be in the same topic as college football? College football at the FCS level is still very competitive and we have members who are fans, students, or alumni from some of the top programs at that level so why can't we discuss our rivalries here? "big boys who have dogs in the hunt"...pffft, It's a game and you're a fan. Not a player. I think you're seriously underestimating the fan base and competitiveness of FCS football. Ask Joe Flacco about it. Or Brian Westbrook the next time you pick him for your fantasy draft. Quote

Big 12 is better and that's all there is to it. Yes, Tech and the Sooners lost(thank God) but Texas won. A W is a W in my book. I honestly believe that the horns will dominate the big 12 and natl title game. And I also believe if the Horns would not have gotten S*** on the way they did, Orakpo would have stopped Tebow. Especially from that little fairy twinkletoes jump pass he does. Besides you are from Va you should be a VA tech or Virginia fan. Which is a wonderful rivalry BTW. Went to a game when I was stationed in Norfolk. Quote

Went to a game when I was stationed in Norfolk. That's a pretty poor argument, dude. And why can't I like other teams? I don't really have a favorite FBS team, I just really like college football in general and from my unbiased opinion I think it's pretty clear that the SEC is the conference to beat this year. Sure, the Big12 had some high ranked teams last year but they choked when it came to the bowl games (again, with the exception of Texas who squeaked by Ohio State which was not an elite team by any means last year.) bigtimfish Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Relax guy. You can like other teams. I have always loved the Horns, but over my years I have grown to like others as well. One of which is an SEC team. I like LSU and also Va Tech. I was wondering. What are your reasons for selecting the SEC as the big dog this year? Is it so you have something to argue about on here? I know my reasons for why I like the Big 12. The reasons are 1. Longhorns 2.Oklahoma(hate the coach) 3.Oklahoma State 4. Tx Tech > 5.Missouri/Mizzou. All of these teams are good, not great(except Horns) I hate everyone of them. I love the Big 12 because these teams every year give the Horns a good game. With mizzou as an exception. I like the Big 12 because it is the only conference I follow. I am sure the SEC is good and all but I don't like any of them(except LSU) or any other conference for that matter. And once again a W is a W no matter how big or small the margin. Quote

I think I was one of the only people in the country who thought the top 3 in the Big12 were overrated last year until bowl season. My assessment is based on what I saw at the end of last year which was TT and OU losing to SEC teams and Texas performing pretty poorly against a non-elite Ohio State team. I'd be willing to bet that the top SEC teams outperform the top Big12 teams this year either in rankings or bowl victories by the end of the season. If I'm wrong, I like my crow with a little pepper and hot sauce. Quote

And we will see in the next few moths. Pay attention and you will start to see a pattern. A pattern of W's coming from the Longhorns all the way to the title game. And they will run Florida,LSU,Alabama or whoever else they go against name through the mud. HOOK EM HORNS BTW your assesment was based on LAST YEAR. The past is the past. You have your opinion I have mine. It's all in fun anyway. Quote

Look, the 3 best team in big 12 last year. Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech in that particular order. 2 of those 3 teams was beat by a team from SEC. One of those team barely beat a team that got dominated by SEC 2 years in a row on the national title stage. SEC is still best football conference in the land of college football. Horns will not hook anything. Big Al has a bigger horn, the tiger is fast, the gator is well a sneaky S.O.B. (they got 2 or 3 players that are 5'5 or smaller that are starters.what the deuce?) P.S. If you want go a little further back I remember in 2005 Texas Tech brought a high quality "air-raid" offense in cotton bowl. Alabama defense shut 'em down and went on to victory. Defense is king in SEC, and that defense will stop any big 12 offense. Quote
