shootermcbob Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 I caught my first fish on a jig w/ a gambler flappin daddy trailer today. Man, I am stoked. I flipped it across a little backwater spot on Tappan lake here in Ohio, and bam, my line just started running away. I set the hook and reeled in a nice 17 inch largemouth bass. I do not know what he weighed, but as far as fish I have caught, he was pretty nice. I did have a powerbait chigger craw for a trailer, but was not getting any bites, so I switched. I debated for awhile, bigger or smaller, and finally opted for bigger since it was about 3 pm. I cast into that general area five or six times. Thanks for listening. I am not sure I am gonnna be able to sleep tonight. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted June 16, 2008 Super User Posted June 16, 2008 Congratulations! As your confidence grows, it gets harder and harder to fish other tackle. Jigs = big bass. 8-) Quote
FR0G Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 Congrats! I remember my first fish on a jig. It just gets better. Pretty soon you'll go all out and get a setup just for jigs. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted June 16, 2008 Super User Posted June 16, 2008 Congratulations, now it is on to a specialized rod, reel, line, different colors/combinations, and of course the box to hold them. Quote
fishbear Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 Congratulations.. I still am waiting for my first jig fish... I have tried every jig and color that I can find at the store.... just can not figure out how to feel the bite... or whatever it takes to hook a bass on a jig. Glad you figured it out. Quote
TournyFish001 Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 A jig really bailed me out of a bad finish at a tourny earlier this year- I got a good fish on the jig, great bait. Shakey head is big up here so I thought I'd give the fish a little different look, I fished a 5/16oz eakins jig/smallie beaver trailer (shortened the beaver first three ribs removed) with rattle. I casted it into open water 10-20ft with the line tight I would shake it just by the line not moving the bait with the rod tip. I repeat only with the line by twitching (I have access to a swimming pool so I know just how to do it without moving it but rather making the bait vibrate in place (with rod in hand its kind of like shaking the ice in a coctail drink, not much movement and don't move that bait with the rod tip- this has proved to be quite effective for open water jigging- try it Quote
shootermcbob Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 Thanks for all the kind words. I kinda feel like I won the lottery. I am still so thrilled. I can't wait to get back out there. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted June 17, 2008 Super User Posted June 17, 2008 Once you start catching them on a jig, it's real hard to throw anything else....watch out! Quote
Brian_Reeves Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Yeah, that ain't no lie 5BL. Jig fishing is very productive. Keep experimenting and you'll find more techniques, combos, and colors to fit nearly every one of your jig fishing needs. Congrats on the jig-fish. I hope it's the first of many for you. Quote
tyrius. Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Once you start catching them on a jig, it's real hard to throw anything else....watch out! Tell me about it. This is the first year of jig fishing for me and I really don't know why I bother bringing my other setups. I may fish them for five minutes and the jig gets the rest of the time. I've been catching MUCH bigger fish this year too. Quote
MaxDal Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Watch out now ! As it has been mentioned by others, jig fishing is addictive. The best part of it (except for the fact that it does catch big fish) has to be the hookset I didn't have to wait so long to catch my first jig bass. I was actually lucky enough to get a bass on my first cast using a jig....plus I was lucky enough not to miss it on the hookset .... I should have stopped right after that bass ... that was a 100% in both catching and setting the hook...... Since then, my average has gone done a bit Anyway, welcome in the big jig family .. (or should I say Sect ?) Quote
