brgbassmaster Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 this cougar was spotted on a live deer cam stalking a buck. we saw one a few yrs back walking down our road and the neighbors saw it a few times also. the dnr came out and confirmed the tracks the day we saw the one at our place. but why do they keep insisting there not in michigan. this is not the first time they have been spotted on deer cams. Super User RoLo Posted July 13, 2009 Super User Posted July 13, 2009 That's a great shot! Here in Florida we have an isolated population of cougar dubbed the Florida panther. It seems that there's more of these big cats than the state agency realizes. During the past two years, two cougars were road killed in Lake Wales, Florida alone (minutes from my home). There were no telemetry collars and the state admitted to being unaware of their presence. Roger Quote
mattm Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 I'm sure there are cougars in Michigan based on the info you posted, but I dont' buy that picture. Your going to tell me a deer can smell me from 200+ yards away when I'm hiding in a tree sitting perfectly still, but doesn't know that cougar has been stalking it for 20 yards walking down the same path and is now 4 feet away. Also, wouldn't the cougar be attacking by this point. Hes plenty close enough that with his speed and element of suprise there is noway the deer is getting away, ever. Why would he risk alerting the deer? Quote
Super User Muddy Posted July 13, 2009 Super User Posted July 13, 2009 I thought this was about the Madonna concert in Detroit>>>> my mistake!!!!!!!!! Quote
daviscw Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 By the way, they have spotted bears in my part of the state. I live in the foothills. We aren't supposed to have bears. Even weirder though, they have been spotted in Greensboro, one of the largest cities in the state. Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 That pics been making the rounds for a while. Someone sent it to me a couple of years back and claimed it came from a local (southeast Missouri) farm. Still a GREAT picture for sure. Our conservation folks say there are no cougars in Missouri, despite numberous sighting, and the carcas of one that was hit and killed with a car a few years ago. Quote
nick76 Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I know last fall the michigan DNR did finally recognize that there are living populations in the state. They were very slow to announce this, but they did eventually give in when multiple sitings and videos were taken of the animals. They have not estimated the population and have said by all accounts that it is very small. I have seen cougars on two occasions in calhoun county. Both of them in the same area and may very well be the same cat. We have tried to get pictures both times, but when we got back with the camera it was gone. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I bet the flash messed up the cougar's chances of taking down the buck :-) Or maybe it helped him? Either way - cool picture. Quote

Super User Sam Posted July 15, 2009 Super User Posted July 15, 2009 People living in the great state of Washington are bracing themselves for a big bengal tiger coming to their parts in September. He will rule the area for a weekend and then go back home to Louisiana. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 15, 2009 Super User Posted July 15, 2009 It does seem odd how the cat is so close? True, but if that cat hopes to take down the deer, he'll have to get even closer than that ;D In New Jersey, the bow-&-arrow season for deer is in October. During that time of year, buck deer are in the rut and are very single-minded and clumsy. During the rutting season, I've had bucks pass my stand that I could almost touch. If the cat in that picture is downwind of the deer, it would instinctively be aware of its advantage, and close the gap as much as possible before the pounce. It's not entirely unthinkable that this image is real, because cats can slink with deceptive speed. If indeed it is a hoax, someone did a "seamless" job of splicing Roger Quote
