Hundreds of New York City public school teachers accused of offenses ranging from insubordination to sexual misconduct are being paid their full salaries to sit around all day playing Scrabble, surfing the Internet or just staring at the wall, if that's what they want to do.

Because their union contract makes it extremely difficult to fire them

Come on people use your head!! ::)

I've been meaning to write a paper (don't worry it will be proofread by someone with superior grammar knowledge) about how the unions are destroying America's labor force and economy.  :D

I got an interesting theory on how the unions hurt and/or limit our economic growth and ability to stay healthy (economic wise). You just need to hear it before you start showing up at my doorstep with a pitchfork. :)

P.S. I'm not starting a fire here and before you bring up executive compensation, my theory about "union destroying America's labor force and economy" also has to do with how executive compensation will hurt a company. ;) overpaying executives and low paying workers is a recipe for disaster in the long run. ;)

P.S.S. Two things are stopping me from getting started..1)Not enough time to do research..2) See number 1.

If the contract is that difficult why in the heck did they agree with it??

Thats the fault of the city or who ever signed into agreement with the union just as well. You know I'll ask for it all and if you agree then shame on you too ;D

Stupid is as stupid does ::)

There is a teacher a few counties away that has received over $50,000 in pay and benefits while she is appealing a conviction for sexual enticement of a child.

It's difficult for me to take one side or another concerning teachers and unions.  Michigan has a high salaries( my home state) for teachers and I support it, in fact I do they they are underpaid.  I have families members that are devoted teachers, that being said even my family members have an attitude that I find despicable.  I could agree or disagree with every corner of this issue.  Just the other night we had dinner with 2 NYC retired teachers.......omg, what an ego trip, but being in Florida we see the difference between east coast and midwest personalities.

I'll save my opinions regarding unions in business for the right thread, as a business owner I have had plenty of interaction with them.  Not theory, but reality.

Three-quarters of those who are teachers shouldn't be. The other one-third don't get paid enough.

Guess what type of math teachers I had....
