soccplayer07 Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Hello all. I normally use Gamakatsu hooks for all my soft plastics. I was bit by the bait monkey a few days ago and decided to give Owner hooks a shot. Long story shortI tied on an owner with a Senko this evening. I get a nice bite and set the hook. The fish takes one jump and my line appears to break. I am thinking to myself this line (Yo-Zuri soft) has NEVER broke on me before. I am furious and continue to reel my line in. Upon closer inspection of my line I realize my knot is still intact which means the knot slipped through the opening on the eye of the hook. Is this a normal problem with Owner hooks??? Why is there even an opening that allows this to happen??? Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 18, 2008 Super User Posted June 18, 2008 I am viewing my Owner 3/0 Offset worm hook and I see the small gap beween the hook eye and the hook shank. I have never had any problems with Owner hooks. I tie a Palamor Knot and make sure it is tied correctly and I have never had any problems. I am also curious if any of the other guys have had problems with the line escaping from the eye on Owner hooks. I wonder if we need to "crimp" the eye tighter when using the hooks? Quote
soccplayer07 Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 I am very anal when it comes to my line and knots. I am 99% sure the knot (also a Palamor Knot) was tied correctly. I have such a sick feeling after loosing a fish like that Quote
soccplayer07 Posted June 18, 2008 Author Posted June 18, 2008 a side note...i notice there sizes run smaller then others as well. Quote
Super User Micro Posted June 18, 2008 Super User Posted June 18, 2008 As Beetle Burley would say... Owner > Gamakatsu Quote
Syfer420 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I used to fish owner cutting points exclusively, but when the fish thrashes sometimes it makes huge holes. I remember my line slipping off all time but i never figured out why. Ive been forced to switch to cheaper hooks anyway. BPS hooks are my favorite and cheapest quality hooks. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted June 18, 2008 Super User Posted June 18, 2008 I've honestly never had problems. You do however have to watch when you tie that palomar knot and make sure it goes pass that gap.I pull tight and my knots don't seem to move after i do.I could see it having problems with thinner diameter lines. warmer Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I realize my knot is still intact which means the knot slipped through the opening on the eye of the hook. Is this a normal problem with Owner hooks??? thats hilarious! i had the exact same thing happen a couple of years ago, but in the reverse. i switched from owner to gami to save some $$$, and i lost fish because the knot slipped through. i think it was a bad batch because i pinched a few down with pliers, and forgot about it after that, and havent had a prob since w/ owner or gami. Cory20 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I fish Owner twist locks and love em. Haven't done the math on whether a gami superline + corkscrew keeper is less expensive. For fishing plastics in heavy cover, they can't be beat. Haven't had the eye problems...yet. I think reaction innovations makes a flipping straight hooks with the eye welded shut. The hook is a gami and RI does the welding? Pretty cool. Quote
weknowhowtolive Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I got some Owner hooks in the mail and I will check them as soon as I get to by tying a knot and TRYING to slip it out. if it does I guess ill have to crimp it down and not buy em again Quote
Willzx225 Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 I have been fishing Owners for 5 or 6 years now and have not had the first problem with the hooks. I switched from Gamakatsu because of hook point problems and I actually broke a few of their hooks (bad batch I am sure but didn't want to run the risk in BFL events). I love the Owner cutting points for their strength. Just curious - What lb line were you using and what size hook was it? Quote
soccplayer07 Posted June 19, 2008 Author Posted June 19, 2008 i was using my spinning outfit...yo-zuri #6. the hook was an ewg 4/0. i really think it was one of those fluke things. however i dont understand why they have the gap though... Quote

Not being a smartass here but the Yozuri could be the problem. I know RW and others will disagree but I have had terrible luck with breakoffs with this line this year. Stopped using it and the problem went away. Doubt it's your hooks gap. If your tying your palomar correctly it will not be an issue. Owners are top notch. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 I've seen this topic pop up on different brands and models of hooks over the years. I'm starting to suspect its a lose knot slipping. I've fished alot of different types of hooks and some had the big gap. I've never had this problem on any brand of hook. Is it possible. I guess it is but I've just never seen it happen or ever had it happen. When I lose a hook at the knot typically the line wears through from my lazyness of retying. I can see that the loops on the line have worn and broke. I've never had one just slip off. Quote

This is my 5th year fishing Yo-Zuri Hybrid and/or Hybrid Ultra Soft. As I have stated on numerous occasions, "I have never been broken off by a fish" using this line. : Quote

I know RW and others will disagree but I have had terrible luck with breakoffs with this line this year. Stopped using it and the problem went away. Doubt it's your hooks gap. The line didn't break. From the original post: Upon closer inspection of my line I realize my knot is still intact If the knot was intact then it HAS to have slipped through the gap, there is no other possible explanation. It happens particularly with smaller diameter lines and maybe a knot that wasn't cinched down 100%. Quote
weknowhowtolive Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 I just got my owner hooks. I see no gap big enough to fit line through. I tried to pull some through and it was not even close. Maybe you got a batch that wasnt bent right? Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 They were probably made on a friday. ;D after happy hr. Quote
