There are some family issues, I am not naive, there are also poverty issues but if you stay a victim of that you die like that. If you do not hid behind excuses, change beyond your wildest dreams are possible

Well said, Dom. I agree 100%. People are very quick to neglect the importance of personal responsibility these days, but poverty, education, and upbringing are all very important and often interconnected as well.

With guys like J Grouch and Johny Bassterd its no wonder that Detroit is number 1. With them 2 i figured they would be 1, 2, and 3.

Nah, it's a wonderful place. Actually here are some words of advice when travelling to Detroit:

1) Don't stop at red lights (especially at night)

2) Don't ask for directions

3) Buy your gas before going into the city

4) Don't ever claim that you aren't a Red Wings fan

5) Don't drive a foreign vehicle there

6) Killer smallmouth bass fishing...just make sure your truck and trailer are insured.

7) Don't talk bad about the Lions... I can't explain it but the fans are dedicated.

8) If lost, then keep driving until you are out of the city... Direction doesn't matter. Just refer to number 2.

9) Watch for potholes, they're everywhere.

10) If someone says, "Gimme your wallet" that isn't open for discussion.

11) And once again...ALWAYS ROOT FOR THE RED WINGS!!!

The city of Camden, NJ used to make that list often. It's right across the Delaware River from Philadelphia.

I work in both cities occasionally. I don't worry too much, I guess knowing what areas to avoid and a little common sense go a long way.

One thing I think these statistics tend to ignore is the fact that a large percentage of the crimes are criminal on criminal; drug dealers and gangs shooting each other over money, territory, whatever.

RW is on the money about the corruption. Camden has been under state control for years now because of the rampant corruption of the past few decades. The New Jersey State Police have a full time task force there as well, because the local cops either cannot or will not (depends who you ask) handle it on their own. For decades the state (taxpayers) pumped millions upon millions dollars into Camden, and not a thing to show for it.

Stockton doesnt surprise me one bit.  That city at one point was the foreclosure capital in the nation, entire neighborhoods wiped clean and still empty.  Many of those homes now are harbors to drug dealers and the homeless.

Anyone wonder why I am no longer known as "westpalmdude"? I can't tell you how happy Christine and I are that we moved away from there. South Florida is just getting worse all the time.
