RiskKid. Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Please let's not get political with this. I'm just curious if folks would buy a new Chrysler or GM (if they do go into bankruptcy) car. If so would it have to be alot cheaper or what would they have to do to get you to buy.....for example a Ram or Silverado over an F-150 Quote
avid Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I used to buy GM cars untill they started to self destruct at 50,000 miles. I switched to Toyota in 1984 and have never looked back. It has nothing to do with their potential bankruptcy. For me it's all about dependability. Quote
fathom Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 as long as toyota makes a pickup truck, i'm good with the world. Quote
Super User flechero Posted May 14, 2009 Super User Posted May 14, 2009 Bankruptcy in many cases only means creditors are going to lose some money... Â the company will not close up. Â I'm not afraid to buy GM, because of a possible bankruptcy. Â My last few trucks have been GMC's and I can say I have had very pleased with them. Â I might buy a toyota next time around, but it will be because a new toyota plant is going in, just down the road... Â and maybe some people I know will build it. Â ...lol Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted May 14, 2009 Super User Posted May 14, 2009 Sure would i have owned many makes of vehicles and its all in how you take care of um.I have a 89 ford ranger id drive to california in a heartbeat.i also have a chevy blazer that was more reliable then my explorer id drive that to cali on a whim also i know both these vehicles in and out and then some Quote
Bull Hurley Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I wouldn't buy the Chrysler not matter what. Â And other than a 2000 F-150 with a blown motor all I do own is GM and am more than satisfied with them. Â Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted May 14, 2009 Super User Posted May 14, 2009 My family have driven Chevy for the past 30 years. Â This will continue...until I have enough money to buy a new Tundra. Quote
done Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I would never buy a Chrysler. Mostly because their products suck. I have known too many folks who owned them (including myself) to get utterly horrible vehicles and NO support from the company that made them. I have owned at least 1 GM since I got my first car, including my current trailblazer with 120,000 miles on it. I would be hesitant to buy another GM with the company the way they are. They likely will not go under but during the bankruptcy they will throw everyone under the bus, including warranty owners and I am not willing to risk that. Quote
bassdocktor Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I personally would buy which ever vehicle I like and would work for its purpose. Not to go too far off topic but I have a serious question. How many of you that keep mention no longer having a warranty have had repairs covered by one? I know my Mercury only had non-warranty items go out. The same when my dad had his Toyota. The Toyota was an expensive fix I remember. Just something I keep thinking about when people mention warranties. Quote
FishingBuds Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Thats a hard one trying to keep a political oppinion out of this. To start buying from them again has everything to do with whats happened. Their quality should still be the same, I have bought both and they have been fine. Last I knew Chrysler bankrupt, and GM did what the government told them to do? So, I would have to go with Chrysler if what I last knew is true, kudos to them doing what really should have been done. Shame on GM for putting the big brothers thumb over them. If all this has changed then I retract my Chrysler and GM comment Quote
1inStripes Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I just don't have a lot of faith in Chrysler, and never have been a fan of GM. Â I am a Ford guy, but I would consider a Toyota as well on a truck. Quote
fivesixone Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I don't think I would buy a Chrysler. Never had good experiences with them. As an owner of a 2002 Monte Carlo with 101,000+ miles and barely any problems whatsoever (besides a thermostat and general maintenance), I would definitely go out and buy a new Chevy. That new Camaro is callin' my name but I'm trying to move outta my house... :'( As for the warranty issue, I wouldn't worry about it as most of the warranty work goes through a third party anyways. I also don't believe GM Goodwrench is going anywhere. I do most of my own maintenance though, so that's a lot different. I didn't use my warranty at all yet for the 4 years I've had the MC. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I had already changed my mind before any hint of bankruptcy. a couple of older used Dodges - good cars 1976 Ford Mustang II  piece of junk 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo good vehicle 1982 Ford Tempo excellent car 1984 Chevy minivan great vehicle 1984 Chevy minivan great vehicle 1991 Honda Civic only short ownership seemed solid 1994 Chevy Mini van great vehicle 1995 Chevy mini van excellent vehicle 1997 Chevy Lumina great vehicle 1999 (2) Chevy S-10's  ( one is son in laws o be ) both total junk 2001 Malibu worst piece of crap ever made Chrysler seems more expensive than many and based on the posts doesn't give me a warm fuzzy sorry to hi-jack the thread but all that coupled with the bankruptcy mess and it is a no go for me on any American i regret to have to but I've decided to switch to Honda and Toyota Quote
pa mountain man Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 i'm a tundra man, beat the crap out of it drilling gas wells, still runs great. Quote
Fish Chris Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Pretty much zero "brand loyalty" here. I LOVE my Ford F150, but I would also love to buy a new Camaro.... Or a Challenger.... I think the Tundra would make one bad a$$ sport truck ! Lord knows they are faster than #### ! My dream car was always a Dodge Viper..... But if somebody wants to give me a new Ferrari, or Lamborgini (just because I'm such a cool guy ;-) I'll take / drive one of those too ! Â I've said it before, but I'll say it again; If "any" car company were as bad, as some of the guys with loyalty for "other" companies, say they are, that company would not even be in business today ! Pitting one modern car company against another, is splitting hairs, and it all really comes down to personal preferences, for which one a guy chooses. If I could have 10 new vehicles, they would probably be made by 8 or 9 different companies, some American, some foreign. Peace, Fish Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 15, 2009 Super User Posted May 15, 2009 No. Â Currently own two GM products, won't own another. Quote
fivesixone Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 If I could have 10 new vehicles, they would probably be made by 8 or 9 different companies, some American, some foreign. That's the truth right there. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 15, 2009 Super User Posted May 15, 2009 It would depend on what I did for a living, if my livleyhood was connected to the domestic market I would buy American without hesitation. I sincerely hope they make it, just works best for everyone. Â Wishing any American industry ill will shows a lack of compassion to our friends, relatives, and I'm sure some of BR forum members. Super User Catt Posted May 15, 2009 Super User Posted May 15, 2009 Would you buy a Chrysler or GM product? No but not because of bankruptcy; my next vehicle will be a Ford F150 #1 truck 32 yrs straight Quote
moby bass Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I own a Jeep and a Dodge Durango. Â Had some problems with the Jeep, but they were resolved. Â Not 1 problem with the Dodge, but I'd have to give serious consideration to looking elsewhere. Â Not so much because of the cars but because of the dealer that now has all the brands. I don't have relationships with any of the salesmen and they are much more high pressure than my former dealership. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted May 15, 2009 Super User Posted May 15, 2009 Yes I would and I will be waiting in the weeds , watching for a good price reduction. I agree with Avid at that time the Japanese cars were so much better. I have since owned a Jeep and now I have a 93 S 10 both around the 200k mark. I believe those past issues have been solved for the most part If GM condenses as Chrysler just did, it means parts and service will still be available. And like Chris stated, when I actually go out for a newer/used means of transportation , what ever resonablly priced car/small truck fits my niche I am in Quote
1inStripes Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I just found a Jeep Patriot (a small SUV that I think looks really good) for a nice price. Â Black, straight drive, leather seats, but Jeeps drive train issues just scare the crap out of me. Â The Wrangler seems to be the vehicle spared the most from Jeeps drive train problems. Â Cherokees, and Liberty's both have a habit of tearing up on them. Quote
Fish Chris Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Hey Catt Ford F150 #1 truck 32 yrs straight  Not 'only' the # 1 truck..... but in fact, the #1 motor vehicle on the road in the US today ! And I can see why. I LOVE mine :-) I've had zero problems. Not even any little bugs which you would expect with any new vehicle. Okay... I do have this rattle in the headliner.... But then it only happens when I crank up my 1400 watt stereo system, with some kind of techno bass track. Geeez, didn't Ford know that "everyone" was going to be installing a 1400 wt stereo system ? I think they should have planned and designed around this  Peace, Fish Quote
1inStripes Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Is the techno bass as in (bass=base or bass=baass)? Â Dad just got rid of his 85 F-150 after close to 400k and still had the original clutch in that old straight drive. Â Other than leaking a little oil the last few years, it was trouble free. The only thing that would worry me about Toyota is the past history of paint issues, and poor frame material that rusted. Â I will give them an attaboy though for following up on that frame issue, offering customer 150% of the value of the truck if they traded it in. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 15, 2009 Super User Posted May 15, 2009 In Florida the sun plays havoc on a car's paint job down here. Â Keeping a coat of wax on is essential to any car. Â My lease on my Toyota Solara convertible just terminated and after 3 years of not waxing the finish, not garage parked and being exposed to salt air by the beach daily..........the finish looks like it drove off the showroom. Â I don't think their paint job is a major cause of alarm. I just leased an auto that in my mind is the finest car I've had and half the price of many I've had before. Â For fear of being stoned the car shall be nameless. Quote
