fish-fighting-illini Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I went to buy my usual off brand of razor blades. I had kind of a hard time finding them but eventually did and they were $3.54 for a 10-pack. These will probably last me for close to a year I'd guess. I couldn't hardly get to them because the $16 for 4 blade ones were all in the way. I don't get it, why would anyone pay that much for a razor blade? The second thing I can think of is sunglasses. Maui Jim's Costa's etc. again I don't get it. I 've had the same pair of sunglasses for probably 4 years, are polarized, help me see fish and work well. What does a $100 - $150 per pair of sunglasses do that a $15-$25 pair won't? Gucci, Coach what a waste of money. If you think of it you could easily add gold and diamonds to the list. What does either do for the average joe? nothing? People who can afford to have the very pricey ones often have knock off's made and keep the reel ones at home so as to not get stolen. What sense does that really make? doesn't that prove the point in itself? Gold is a little more complicated than that but almost in an artificial way in itself. Just kind had to semi-vent as I have been curious about this for a lwhile.
Super User Tin Posted May 5, 2009 Super User Posted May 5, 2009 Gucci, Coach what a waste of money. My girl's collection of Abercrombie and Fitch, Coach handbags, and Nike Shox is about what my boat and truck cost. Then again, she is an eyetie.
Super User burleytog Posted May 5, 2009 Super User Posted May 5, 2009 why would anyone pay that much for a razor blade? Because the Fusion gives the best shave I have ever gotten. What does a $100 - $150 per pair of sunglasses do that a $15-$25 pair won't? Protect your eyes from the sun and flying objects. Would you trust a 5 cent condom?

Thankfully my wife's collection of Vera Bradley comes nowhere close to what I have in the boat. Then again, I've got a $2000 boat and $1500 worth of electronics and accessories.

Either 10 or 15 for $1.
Super User Root beer Posted May 5, 2009 Super User Posted May 5, 2009 Why would you go to Hardees and get a 6.00 burger when you can go to McDonald for a 1.00? It just business. Long as someone is buying it, someone going to be producing. Lot of companies gives you what you pay for. I really like the fusion. I got pair of Coasta Del Mars, I love them. Better than a cheap Wal-Mart crap. My friend got a pair of Oakley's, they are pretty cool. It just pure marketing and product itself. Why would you spend 200.00 on an Ipod? when you can get away with a 50.00 one? Simply because Ipod offers better features and it looks cool. I'm firm believer of capitalism, the market will speak for itself. Long as someone is buying, there always going be a producer selling and making it. And while that is happen, people like me are going be buying stocks on it.

Unless they are safety rated you haven't protected anything from flying objects. In fact by wearing anything non safety rated you could be putting your eyes at more risk. Now if we are talking about bugs that is a different story.

However, compare a double cheeseburger to a McDouble and you have yourself an arguement.
brgbassmaster Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 lucky craft crankbaits 15$ a piece screw that. i can buy my h20 express from academy for 3.50 and do just as good. baits look exactly the same.

MitchIsFishin Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Truthfully, and ONLY my opinion, everything we buy is overpriced crap. From the cars, to the crappy built homes, to the cheapa$$ clothes, and yes, the fishing stuff too. To me, nothing is worth what we pay for it.
Daniel My Brother Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I also wear cheap sunglasses, buy generic razor blades, and have little use for desinger labels. That said, if somebody wants to pay more for a little luxury, and they can afford it, go for it. My non-fishing friends think I spend way too much on fishing gear, but many on this site consider BPS rods, and reels under $100 low end. Buy what makes you happy, and don't give a rip what anybody else thinks.
mrlitetackle Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 cheap sh#t isn't all that bad, eh...... im on a budget to say the least, but my rx costa's were quite a few $'s!!!! ....(but they'll last many years, making the cost ratio obsolete !!) as far as everything else i purchase.....its all bargin priced.....except for my shimano reels.....gotta have'em....and they'll last for years as well!!
Super User Sam Posted May 5, 2009 Super User Posted May 5, 2009 Razor blades are where the profit is in the shaving industry. People like brand names and will pay for for Luck Craft and RICO, etc. plus other products. Sometimes paying a higher price gives the consumer a feeling of satisfaction that they are buying a higher quality product. Advertising is a powerful medium and can sway people's purchases to the advertised products. There are many, many overpriced products out there and it is up to us to consider which ones we wish to purchase. Consumer Reports magazine has many articles and ratings of many major products and sometimes the findings are surprising. If I want it, I will buy it, even if it is priced too high. The Bait Monkey is my friend. ;D
Super User Muddy Posted May 5, 2009 Super User Posted May 5, 2009 It's none of my business what other people pay for their stuff. WhaI do with my money is my issue and not yours. I buy what I can afford and enjoy, I could give a ^@#@ about what people shave with
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Why pay an arm and a leg for Yamamoto plastics when you can catch the same fish with ***? If you think you can't catch the same fish, you are short changing your ability, not the plastics ability I'm all about value. I was sponsored by Oakley for 4 yrs. The fact that they came apart and could be reassembled was the key point for me,...interchangeable parts. Worth $100 because for a few bucks more you can change lens colors (for changing snow conditions) or arms,....... not anymore. So now I use $25 Calcutta optics. UV protection and polarized, all I need. Neither will stop a bullet but either will stop a bug if you're on a motorcycle, what else do I need them for?
CJ Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 To answer the question: 1. lawyers 2. law makers 3. outboard engine repairs 4. sporting event tickets 5. a hot dog at a sporting event
Joe Boss Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 why would anyone pay that much for a razor blade? Because the Fusion gives the best shave I have ever gotten. X2 I shave everyday and swap out the cartridge every month. To save money I can go 2 or 3 months before changing a cartridge they are that good. Try doing that with a disposable, if you dare. Shaving with a disposable is like dragging broken glass across your face try a Fusion you won't look back.

The one that vibrates is called the Fusion Power. I have that one and the regular kind. They are both fantastic razors and I have shaved with everything from straight to safety razors.
Olebiker Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Starbucks coffee. That is nasty stuff that is nowhere near as good as what you get at the average convenience store. For the price of a Lucky Craft Pointer I can get two Rapala X-Raps that, in my experience, are far superior baits. I managed a department store for years and was always amazed at men who paid big bucks for Ralph Lauren Polo merchandise. It was the poorest quality merchandise we sold. The knit shirts shrank about 20% in length with a couple of washings and the lapels on the suits would not lay flat.
atx_newbie Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I have to contest the Starbucks comment. Yeah, the crazy concoctions they come up with (ex: half caf skinny vanilla mocha frappee....) are silly, but just the regular coffee is really good. At the grocery store I buy either the Cafe Verona or Sumatra, both very strong, bold coffees. One thing I will say is wine. I've never had a good bottle of wine that cost more than $10. So that's my rule, I never spend more than $10 on a bottle of wine.

Thus their nickname of "Starburnt." That doesn't make for good coffee at all. Of course, de gustibus non est disputandum.

A real Polo will not shrink. They are pre srhunk. Ive worn polos from Old Navy, Gap, and Nautica to name a few, and Ralph Laurens were the only Polos not to shrink. Not saying they aren't expensive, but I can attest to their quality.
