frogtog Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Looks like they could have found somewhere else to put them power poles at. : Quote
Pitchinkid Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 you take the weirdest frickin pictures ever. You must use over 1000 batteries a year. Quote
1inStripes Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Burley couldn't pass up on another picture of burley baccer. I must say that is some deep trenches between the rows. Almost looks like it was planted when it was really muddy. Quote
Pond Hopper Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 You farming beets Dwight? Out of curiosity what kind of planter do they use for planting tobacco Burley? Quote
Super User Dan: Posted May 11, 2009 Super User Posted May 11, 2009 I must say that is some deep trenches between the rows. Almost looks like it was planted when it was really muddy. I thought the same thing. The ground in that pic looks like dried chocolate pudding... Would the deep trenches be for catching and holding water perhaps? Quote
1inStripes Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Possibly but I would think too much water trapped in could easily lead to blight and blue mold possibly. Quote

Almost looks like it was planted when it was really muddy. That isn't burley, it is flue-cured. I'm way out of the burley belt. :-? Those aren't trenches, the crop is planted on ridges. My dad and I always toyed with the idea of doing it when we raised tobacco, but never did it. The ridges would make cultivation so much easier. Quote
Olebiker Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Just looking at a row of tobacco gives me nightmares remembering riding that setter, topping, cutting, and stripping burley tobacco. I'm so glad we starved off that farm. Quote
-FisherGal- Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 isnt this so much fun!!! The joys of TOBACCO....... glad my family took the buy-out option a few years back.. I think setting is the easiest part.....=) especially with those float plants, when you dont have to go pull them. It surely beats topping and spearing. Now cutting wasnt that bad if you wanted to build muscles..and didnt run across any snakes. ha ha I probably done more work in tobacco and hay in my life than most guys my age around this part.... I figured it wasn't actual burley, but was making the reference to your name. Still looks like it was a muddy mess when planted. Quote

The buyout was somewhat welcome, but I really miss growing the stuff. I enjoyed the time spent with my dad and grandfather. Just hated the constant work. Quote
-FisherGal- Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 oh gosh.... not me? i dont miss it. me, my mom, dad, and brother all worked in it...but, i still see them all almost every day so...=) its better just getting together for a cookout or something rather than to hoe tobacco...lol. i still love the outdoors though, i think i did take that away from the tobacco experience...now i have flowers every where that i can take care of....strawberries, tame raspberries, apples, grapes...all of the wonderful things you have to work at but isnt a year round job!!! where exactly are you from.... we arent too far awayfrom one another? so do i know you? Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 11, 2009 Author Super User Posted May 11, 2009 I don't know, do you know me? I didn't enjoy the year-round work all that much, but I would love to grow an acre or two again just for nostalgia. One thing is for sure, it was great exercise. Quote
-FisherGal- Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 ha ha... I DONT KNOW.... thats why I asked you. You said you were located close to me ? but i can never see your web page, so i dont know... Quote
