Super User Gone_Phishin Posted May 3, 2009 Super User Posted May 3, 2009 Is there any way a sticky can be created to advertise the search function? Everyday there are several new posts started that are unnecessary; these posts are taking up a ton of room. People really need to start using the search function. It's free and it doesn't bite. Quote

Super User Gone_Phishin Posted May 4, 2009 Author Super User Posted May 4, 2009 It's already mentioned in several stickies. See how well they work? : I'm well aware that it has been mentioned, but it's not working. People are not taking the time to read each little part of those stickies. Either that, or they don't care. I just figured that if there was one sticky, and the search function was mentioned in the title, we wouldn't have to sift through all of the unnecessary posts every day. Just a thought. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 4, 2009 Super User Posted May 4, 2009 Either that, or they don't care. BINGO! I'm sure that if you polled the users of this forum (or any forum for that matter), a conservative 80% could not identify the contents of any stickied thread. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted May 4, 2009 Super User Posted May 4, 2009 The problem is that lazy people want instant gratification, so they don't even bother trying to research the wealth of information provided here. They just blindly post a question that has probably been asked, and answered, a hundred times before. An equally severe problem is that other members actually bother to answer the very same repeated questions - and I plead guilty to having done the same. With 20,000 registered members, there will be a huge percentage of the lazy who ask previously answered questions - and there will be a huge percentage of those not-so-lazy who will be more than willing to provide a response. Maybe a great big red flashing sticky would help, but I doubt it. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted May 4, 2009 Super User Posted May 4, 2009 I understand the frustration with searching through repetitive threads to find fresher subjects; however, this is a forum. If everyone searched for every subject that had ever been posted the membership as a whole would have much less to talk about. Maybe laziness isn't the only reason for these threads. Some people probably prefer communicating with someone in the present, rather than going back and reading an old thread. I, personally, don't participate in a lot of the repetitive threads if another member is providing the answers that the original poster is seeking, but I will make a post if no one provides a response to a question. Super User flechero Posted May 4, 2009 Super User Posted May 4, 2009 Heck with a sticky... there is a search tab and a quick search box at the top of everyone's page already... half of the problem is that people are lazy, the other half is that people think that they will get a different answer if they ask it... and if they don't they throw another qualifier in to see if they do. ...lol Quote

Maybe Glenn should incorporate a pop-up when the site is initially accessed to direct people to use the search function. I'm sure that would go over well. Quote

On top of all the info in the articles, a simple search would probably answer 95% of the ridiculous, redundant questions that have been asked repeatedly over time. Just doing that would clear the boards for more important topics like, What Burley had for dinner tonight or more personal attacks on Bill Dance and his fishing abilities. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 4, 2009 Super User Posted May 4, 2009 What Burley had for dinner tonight Hot dogs, tater wedges and Diet Dr Pepper Quote
Super User Muddy Posted May 5, 2009 Super User Posted May 5, 2009 What is a tater wedge, do you t rig them? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 5, 2009 Super User Posted May 5, 2009 Let's all remember, there is no requirement for anyone to respond to a question. Redundancy is par for the course. If you want to suggest the BassResource Library, which I often do, that's helpful. On the other hand, if you explained why you tie a Palomar Knot yesterday, you don't need to do it again today! Another feature I use quite often is my "Favorites" folder. An example is "Top 10 Baits/ Lures". The thread is three years old and I have updated my response to add Rage Tail and Caviton lures I have added to my tackle: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1143177139 8-) Quote
