Uncle Leo Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 My wife told me about her and I just had to give a listen. Needless to say I was blown away and just had to share for anyone who had not heard about her. She can sing! http://www.susanboyleblog.com/ Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted April 17, 2009 Super User Posted April 17, 2009 The surprise of the decade! I first learned about her on Brian Williams' evening news, and followed the link to You-Tube. What a voice! Sony has already tried to sign her to a recording contract and Oprah wants her to appear on her show. A dowdy spinster becomes a Cosmic Megastar almost overnight. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted April 17, 2009 Super User Posted April 17, 2009 Blew me out of my chair. And I'm an old fuddy duddy stuck in the Seventies rock fan. She deserves to go very far..... Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 Just like me, my wife's mouth fell open when she started her performance. Brilliant. Something to pass along to those who are not the beautiful people but have a secret talent. Thanks for sharing. This is inspirational for everyone. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 Maybe it was the youtube audio quality, but I understand all the hubbub. She is a good singer, but the only reason she is getting attention is because she is also frumpy. I can think of quite a few singers that I believe are more talented. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 An absolutely incredible performance. Simon had $$$ signs in his eyes towards the end there. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 .. I can think of quite a few singers that I believe are more talented. Quite a few with no professional experience who spent quite a few years caring for an ailing mother who recently died and that walked out of a tiny little Scottish village, onto a stage and sang like that? I can't think of any. Quote

I think people are getting caught up in the great story, not the voice. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 DD, unless you are some sort of musical virtuoso, I would suggest that your opinion is just that - your opinion. Do not denigrate a beautiful voice just because she does not look, scream, stomp and gyrate like a rock star. That's my opinion of your opinion. Quote

I'll take the judges word for it over yours, they obviously have a little more experience with this music deal than yourself. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 YEAH DOMINION DAN! Dont you dare have a tactful opinion! Not unless other people agree with you! "Denigrate" lmao. I think she sings well. She gets all this extra attention because she is fugly. Quote
Kimbro Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 She is a great singer. It is sad that society has made such a big deal out of the situation because of her appearance rather than her talent. Joe Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 Do yourselves a favor. Go watch a youtube clip of Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey and tell me that this Susan Boyle lady has a voice that is good enough to warrant all this attention. Sure, they are trained professionals, but who cares? I think people are judging Susan Boyle by her story and appearance and making a big story out of her because she has lived the life and shows the physical traits of a soon to be "cat lady." The story is more about the surprise of her having a good voice while looking like she does than it is about her actually having an amazing singing voice. The story is more about her appearance than her voice. Quote
SMSRTC Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 She performed wonderfully I thought. Yeah, she probably got some extra attention because no one expected her to sing like that the first time, but that only lasts a short period. Her talent will be what sees her through. She reminded me of Paul Potts from the 2007 season. Nobody expected it from him either. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 Yes sometimes it is the whole package. How many take the chance when given? Beauty comes in all forms. Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 She is friggen fantastic. Outstanding voice. I listen to opera (not while fishing) and her voice is on par with the professional opera singers. As said by the judges, it is a privilege to hear her sing. Quote

Go watch a youtube clip of Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey and tell me that this Susan Boyle lady has a voice that is good enough to warrant all this attention. Sure, they are trained professionals, but who cares? I have listened to those singers, along with Barbara Streisand, Judy Garland, Sandi Patti, etc. etc. She could sing right along side any one of them despite the fact she hasn't had a lifetime of experience nor formalized vocal training or coaching. Seriously, do you really think that Mariah or Whitney actually came out of the box sounding just like they do now? I think people are judging Susan Boyle by her story and appearance and making a big story out of her because she has lived the life and shows the physical traits of a soon to be "cat lady." The story is more about the surprise of her having a good voice while looking like she does than it is about her actually having an amazing singing voice. The story is more about her appearance than her voice. It's about the story and the voice. It's about the audience and judges initial reaction and then what happened after she began singing. It's about a society that judges far too often on outward appearance and not on inward beauty nor talent. It's about form but ignoring the substance. Had this women been even average looking there probably wouldn't even be a Youtube video of the performance. Her story and her magnificent voice is an inspiration and a breathe of fresh air at a time when everyone could use a little of both. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 I just don't think her voice is good enough to warrant all the attention, it's her looks that gets the attention and that's not right for a talent show. The show she sang for is a competition right? She will have to perform a lot more. I'll change my mind if she wins. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 brits are hard to turn they dont do any sugar coating like they do in america .hate to say it but america is made up of who ever can get on TV is suddenly THE STAR of all stars <Just being on TV to 90% of americans makes them feel like a GOD .mariah wouldnt be anyone without music vids same as Whitney Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 .mariah wouldnt be anyone without music vids same as Whitney Yeah, you're right. Mariah Carey is only famous because of music videos. It has nothing to do with her 5 octave range. Same with Whitney, it must just be the music videos. They made her voice better in "I Will Always Love You" and they even improved her performance of the Star Spangled Banner at Super Bowl 25....gimme a break. Quote
1inStripes Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Since their own 2 years apart in age, I would probably rather hear Boyle than Whitney sing today. Too much crack damage to those pipes of hers. But anyway, you ladies have fun with the chick talk. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 It's the classic case of "don't judge a book by its cover" It is a great story but I think that lady can sing with the best of them. I did click on the Potts link and he can sing too FFI - AKA Matt Crum Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Go watch a youtube clip of Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey Only MO, but have never been impressed with either one. Quote
farmpond1 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 She (Susan) has some pretty good pipes. It's difficult to argue that. But I can see where Dominion Dan is coming from too. There's plenty of hype going on here. A portion of it comes from the surprise of hearing something so pleasant coming out of a "frumpy" woman's mouth and everybody loves an underdog. If you don't mind my putting words in your mouth, I think that's what DD is railing against -the hype. It was difficult to even hear Susan with all the screaming from the audience. I wish I could find other songs she's done to form a better opinion. Quote
avid Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Like most people I was impressed with Ms. Boyle's singing. But this is the image age, and alas though her singing is an A her visual appeal is an F. I'm really glad that the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, and Sarah Vaughn came along before all the "hot" singers, many of whom are truly talented, made beauty a prerequisite for a recording career. The one notable exception is Amy Winehouse. That girl can sing. Or at least she could. Let's see if her drive for self demolition has succeeded in ruining her voice. Quote
