nboucher Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I haven't listed to John Prine in a long, long time, but "Hello in There" used to be one of my favorite tunes. Then I saw him on Austin City Limits a couple of years ago while he was touring again after a bout with neck cancer, and I was impressed. Yesterday I downloaded his 2005 comeback CD Fair and Square and fell in love with his work again. When I asked people about him at work today, I was shocked to learn no one had ever heard of him! Olebiker Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I was talking about coal mining with a 40 year old coworker yesterday and, when I sang a little bit of "Muhlenberg County", she gave me a blank look. She had never heard the song and had never heard of Prine. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 17, 2009 Super User Posted April 17, 2009 Meet John at a private party in Houston back in 1973 along with David Allan Coe and Steve Goodman; not many people know John & Steve wrote "You Never Even Call Me By My Name". Quote
nboucher Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 Catt, you are one lucky man. That's a lot of great songwriting talent there. Biker, one of my coworkers said, "Isn't someone that your generation liked?" Oh, brother . . . Quote

You ought to hear Arlo Guthrie tell the story about Steve Goodman accosting him in a bar in Chicago and trying to get him to listen to a song he wrote. Arlo finally gave in and told Goodman, "Buy me a beer and as long as it takes me to drink the beer I'll listen to your song. It was the best beer I ever had." As you may imagine, the song was "City of New Orleans." Quote
nboucher Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 Kris Kristofferson seems to have first brought a lot of these guys to the attention of the public and recording studios. Quote

bass or bass ? Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I've always liked Prine, and the late Steve Goodman has been one of my favorites since the 70's. Happy fishing. ~B.A.S.S.~N.A.F.C.~BoatU.S.~N.R.A.~A.M.A.~ Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 18, 2009 Super User Posted April 18, 2009 "Oh, I've been thinking lately 'bout the people I meet, the carwash on the corner and the hole in the street." Yep, I'm a fan. I was introduced to Prine by a high school english teacher. My favorites are "Angel from Montgomery" and "Fish and Whistle" Quote
Panamoka_Bassin Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I had heard of him, but until a couple years ago, had no real idea who he was. I liked his music so much, I got my band to learn "Please Don't Bury Me." Its become one of our crowd favorites, but I doubt that many people know who John Prine is, lol... Quote
