Super User Root beer Posted April 13, 2009 Super User Posted April 13, 2009 As many of you may or may not know by now, that I'm Accounting/Finance major. I have very limited and lack of creativity when it comes to writing. But I'm highly knowledgeable to the world of economic. If any of you guys/gals are sitting here bored reading this. Perhaps you like to help me with my English presentation. I'm not going to plagiarized your idea, I just need help getting jump start. Each student will make a 15-minute presentation to the class that includes an argument, support for the argument, and a visual aspect (PowerPoint, video, etc.) The task: Analyze your particular popular culture icon. This character must be a fictional character, or, if it is a person from "real life," you must choose a media portrayal of that person. You may want to explore the cultural and social context created by the character, the importance the character has to cultural identity, and/or the function of the character in the greater social context. You should discuss the importance of this character to the formation of your own ideas of culture. Focus on one of the following questions or create your own in order to give your essay focus. * How does the character affect you or those around you? * What specific elements or characteristics do you see associated with the character? * What influence has the character had on culture? How has the character contributed to social changes? * Does the character inspire different perspectives? Is the character a controversial one? * How has society reacted to the character? P.S. Could Warren Buffett make a pop culture presentation? I mean I could make it last longer than 15 minutes on this subject. ;D P.S.S. I wonder if I could create a fictional character and portray him as a greedy wall street broker? I mean lot of people thinks the boys on Wall Street are evil people. I'm try get my ideas organized then ask my professional on Wednesday if she thinks I'm going in right direction. Quote
daviscw Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Due tomorrow? ;D This is exactly why you should choose App State. My longest paper has been 5 pages, and I got it this semester. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted April 14, 2009 Author Super User Posted April 14, 2009 Actually it was assigned today. I'm suppose to do mine next wed. on the 22nd. My longest paper has been 645 words to be exact. I manage to make a C on every paper (4 papers) with barely meeting word requirement. And only reason why I made Cs was because I kept using past tense when she wanted literary present tense. I'm convinced that procrastination will be my downfall. Quote
hjerk24 Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 What about BONO, or some other musical icon? Lance Armstrong... Michael Phelps....I think sports or music, because it may be easier? How about Ray Scott....founder of Bass, or Forrest l. Woods.. Or... The founder of Walmart (Walton) I think??????....that would make for some interesting conversation. If all else fails...go Michael Jackson...can't go wrong. Good luck. Or weird Al Yankovich...the names are endless...but make it fun for you to do. It will be fun, and will catch your class off guard, and your prof. Walt Disney.....Steven Spielberg, Jerry Seinfeld...the ideas are as open as your mind. Good Luck! Quote
tbird Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 If you want an interesting character look up Alfred Nobel who the Nobel peace prize is named after. I did a story on him in college and got an A , not because I am a good writer but I think my teacher was fascinated with this guy.Interesting stuff. T Quote
done Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Have some fun with it. As soon as you sweat it, you get a mental block. Try taking 3 or 4 famous folks or characters and put them in a blender. Then talk about 'em. Something like Britney Spears, Madoff, and Happy Gilmore. Pull together their character traits, things they have done, etc and put together a report on it. You could have a ton of fun with it. Don't discount the value of writing though in your career. I was a Computer Science major, thought writing papers was a considerable waste of time when I'd rather be writing code. And presentations....what use will I ever have of those. I regularly write huge docs (from small 40-50 page small ones, 200+ pages) on a regular basis. My record was 800 pages. I also have ended up in front of groups doing presentations (including once 40 or so really angry nurses). The experience will serve you well so hang in there. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Warren Buffet is an icon. I think that would be a good one. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted April 14, 2009 Super User Posted April 14, 2009 Check your PM box, I sent you a good outline, all you have to do is pick the person. I have written over 15 X 1,100 word or better papers with the lowest grade being an A- so I can offer you a little experience here Good Luck Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 14, 2009 Super User Posted April 14, 2009 What does the teacher mean by "fictional character?" You interpreted it as a character that you make up. When I read it I immediately thought of a cartoon or film character like Mickey Mouse or Scarface. Just asking to clarify. Quote
SmokeRise1 Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Professional sports stars and rock stars are not fictional characters. They are people. An example of a fictional character would be Fred Flintstone or Gordon Gekko. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted April 14, 2009 Author Super User Posted April 14, 2009 I have no freaking clue. I'm ask her tomorrow about it. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted April 14, 2009 Super User Posted April 14, 2009 Do your presentation on Superman. Winner. A+ easy I dunno, I think you could write more on Capt. America. LOL, maybe. Though I did read the part about the PowerPoint presentation. Wonder Woman would be good for that, depending on the number of men in the audience... Quote
