The great and fulfilling world of scholarships have been kind to me.  I was awarded a full ride to the University of Central Arkansas Honors College.  This not only nailed down UCA as my final choice, but also took a giant financial burden off of my shoulders.

Hopefully I can pertain the Arkansas Governor's Scholarship ($12k) and a few local private scholarships.  That would be awesome.

Has anyone else decided on their post-graduation plans?

congrats, dude. As a graduating senior I have some advice for you. Don't waste your time by sitting around doing nothing--you will not remember any of it. Get involved with as many clubs, organizations, etc, as you can. The busier you are, the more things you will have to remember.

Thanks for the advice.  I'm involved in every major club in HS right now, hopefully I can do the same in college.  I might even try to start up a fishing team there.

It's technically within the Department of Biology, but they have a specific Pre-Med program.

I'm actually torn between Pre-Med and Pre-Dental.  They are basically the same classes, just under different titles.

If you want to do that you should start immediately. It can take time to get through the school approval and funding processes. Find other people with similar interests (through facebook or other organizations) to see if you will have enough support. Then learn the process for creating a club at your school. Often times you will have to request funding from the school and you have to make presentations and prove to student council orgs that you are a viable club that would benefit from getting school money. I always wanted to start a club at my school but I always put it off and then by junior and senior year I just didn't have the time. Good luck and have fun.

Gotcha. I was Biology for the first year and then switched to Biomedical Sciences in the health sciences college. Yea, the whole pre professional track is very similar for all post graduate schools. Let me know if you have any questions. I just graduated in 2006 from college and am currently just finishing up my 2nd year of dental school in Chicago right now. I would be more than willing to help you out in any way. As far as choosing medicine or dentistry, well...., you know what would get my vote. haha.

Congrats man!!! Coming from someone who screwed around in HS so much he had to pay his own way (Something my wife still bugs me for as she was her class validictorian), absolutely awesome work man, outstanding job!!

If you are going to learn to master any drinking games...2 words, "beer pong". Master that one and you will be good to go.

Really though, responsibly enjoy your time. I lived in a dorm that was pretty much every bit as insane as Animal House. Not surprisingly, in real life what happened, only 2 of us (our of 70-ish) did NOT get thrown out as a result of our grades.  Of that 2, I was on academic probation (never got below a 3.8 again), and the other guy was going to AA (No joke he really was).

It was one of the best times of my life. In my 4 years at school I made more and better friends than any other time in my life to date. Get involved on campus, study hard, and enjoy. You will definitely never forget it.

UICdent11 is right all the preprofessional courses are pretty similar. I can add that even the pharmacy ones are almost the same as med school. That's what I was finding with all my friends doing premed while I was doing prepharmcay. Only real difference depending on the school might be a few extra bio classes.

Word of advice start checking out the requirements for the different med/dental schools you are looking at now. I'm not sure if it is the same as pharmacy but I know if I would have applied to certain schools I would have needed a few different courses.

I will second what bassdocktor has just said. To be more specific it usually comes down to physics, microbio, and calc. Some schools require all and some require one or two. I am speaking for the dental part, but I am sure it is the same for Med and Pharm.

Even if you pick the pre-dental track at your school and it doesn't cover the requirements for a post grad school you are looking it, you can just take those classes as your electives. The first 2 years at any major university for a pre anything in Bio or Chem is going to be the same.

That's awesome, congrats Hookem :-)

You'll realize how fortunate you are when you graduate without any college loans to pay off. They can be a huge burden.

Also, my grandfather was a dentist. He said it was by far the best profession because once you have your own practice, you make your own hours, you make great money, and you don't have the stressful burden of frivolous malpractice suits that can quickly end your career. He used to work 5 am to noon during the week and play golf for the rest of the day, for his whole career. Oh, and you're never on call. Good luck, and again, congrats!!!!!

Lucky man...Dentists have the 3rd highest suicide rate behind psychiatrists, and hospital doctors.

Yea I almost jumped off a cliff when I got in. :) I find it funny that suicide always comes up when you bring up dentistry. There is no truth to the statement.

No there is. Just covered suicide in my Advance Abnormal Psych class last week. They use to be number one on the list and are now number four on professions with the highest rates of suicide.

Interesting, do you happen to have the article? I know there was one done back in I think 1971, but their conclusion was that it was because everyone hates the dentist and they are lower in prestige than doctors. I think that the recent numbers point towards Vets, EMT's, ER docs and family physicians. I would be interested to hear what you have learned.
