HOIST-N-HAWGS Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I purchased AVG on the advice of an internet security buff and so far so good. Been using it for 5 months and it blows the others away. How does it blow the others away? Not very computer savy, but I was refering to Norton or McAfee as well as PC tools & Trend Micro which I've had in the past and always had problems w/viruses/Trojans( I know stay away fron those sites ;D) But since AVG was recommended I've had zero issues. I do also run Spybot S& D as well. I've run Malware detection tools from other developers and they find nothing as well. I think I spent $60 for a year of protection if I remember correctly and they back it with guaranteed removal and remote support if you do get a virus. So for me it's been well worth the investment. If I knew what the heck the others were that you recommeded I look into them for when my AVG subscription expires. Feed me and I will look into them. Thanks, Paul Quote
Panamoka_Bassin Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I've used the 3 majors since owning a PC (Norton, McAfee, Symantec) and I've found McAfee to be the best so far. When I got this new mother board (Make sure your PC fan works!) the guy "loaned" me the pro version of McAfee, and I have not had any problems (knock on wood). What I like about it is the detail to which I can protect my PC. It takes some time to set up, but you can do a lot with it once everything is tweeked the way you want it. As for taking up space or limiting PC performance, unless you have an old PC, the amount it uses is certainly negligible. If an anti-virus program is affecting your PC, it may be time to upgrade your RAM, which is relatively cheap and easy to do yourself. $30 at Best Buy can get you 1 gig of ram: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17080&type=page&initialize=false&sp=%2Bbrand+skuid&nrp=15&iht=n&list=y&sc=abComputerSP&qp=crootcategoryid%23%23-1%23%23-1~~q70726f63657373696e6774696d653a3e313930302d30312d3031~~cabcat0500000%23%230%23%2311a~~cabcat0506000%23%230%23%2318~~nf398%7C%7C504e59&usc=abcat0500000&ks=960&st=processingtime%3A%3E1900-01-01&prids=&cp=2&_requestid=9513 and that may be all you need to do...Just make sure you get the right stick(DDR/DDRII). I just fixed a friend's computer who ran McAfee. McAfee scan showed no infections. I installed and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program. It found 93 infected items. Needless to say, I don't care for McAfee too much. Also, I Symantec is the company that makes Norton. Unless they make another a/v program with a different name that I don't know about, Norton and Symantec are the same thing. Quote
