I have read articles about this potential solar storm before. It could possibly happen and if it does, I'm afraid the scenerio they paint is accurate.  Other than a short term survival plan, I don't think there's much we could do to survive 3 or 4 months with no electricity. One thing they didn't mention in the article is, that along with the other problems of shortages of fuel, food water and meds, is that the civil chaos would be unprecedented.  I wonder why the year 2012.  Is that a random number, a guess, or do they have some concrete evidence.

2012 coincides with the peak of activity for the current solar cycle. So there is an elevated risk, so far as we know, of such a CME occurring on that year.

Incidentally, Dec 21,2012 is also one of those Armageddon days. There is some type of alignment with the galactic center at that time. It was either the mayans or aztecs whose calendar ended at that date and they predicted the current era would come to a sudden end on that date.

The guy who was chiseling the Mayan calendar got tired of hammering. Thats all. Humans have been around a long time, at least 4000 years right. Controlled and produced electricity has only been around for a little over 100. The Earth is over 4.5 billion years old and has changed over and over and over. We are weaklings on a cosmic scale. Worry about today because tomorrow will never be garanteed.

Well the Mayans apparently had enough time on their hands that they saw that we would have this galactic alignment. Which to a primitive culture would have likely meant to them, something big HAD to happen. The alignment has actually been confirmed to be a truth. Now whether that means anything will happen because of it. We are guessing. We barely know anything about our own rock much less the nature of our galaxy and the forces within it.

Anyway...since the natural world loves irony, you know what will finally wipe out this planet will be a completely unforseen and unknown happening. Like sitting at the train stop waiting for the train to come in and getting hit by a porta-potty dropped out of an airplane at 40,000 ft. LOL.

Personally, I plan for the reasonable happening, and try not to sweat things you have no control over. It is such a big universe there are probably twice as many things that can kill us that we dont know about than the things we know can kill us.

Y2K, I wish. I made soo much money on my internship coding for Y2K, it was awesome. I haven't figured out how to code for coronal mass ejections yet. LOL.

coronal mass ejections yet. LOL.

Is that what happens on May 6th? (Think about that one...lmao)

Another thing to get people hyper worried about, and there's nothing that can be done about it. Why is it that "science" feels it has to be as sensational as the regular media? Right up there with the idea of a comet or meteor hitting the earth, or California falling off the continent when the "big one" hits. My advice, put your head between your legs and kiss your goodbye. Ain't much else you can do...

Solar Storm in 2012

Mayan Calendar ends in 2012

Armageddon says world ends in 2012

The Torah supposedly states that the world will end in 2012

2012 is supposedly the year some other planet orbits into our solar system and do something that's going to kill us.

I can even think of other stories that people think the world will end in 2012.

2012 is going to be a fun year.

It was the Mayans. And not only the Mayans. Ancient Egyptian and ancient Hebrew predictions also chose the date December 21, 2012 as a time of calamity.

[Disclaimer: I work in this field of research] Actually, the current solar minimum is dragging on a bit longer than expected so the next solar maximum is more likely to be 2013 or so. However, the most powerful solar storms do not necessarily occur at absolute solar maximum. For example, the biggest storms we saw in the last cycle were late October 2003, but the solar max was ~2001/2002. And that's part of the problem -- these storm are unpredictable.

A truly extraordinary event -- the sort alluded to in that (highly inflammatory...) article will probably only happen a couple of times a century. The risk is that we have never had one that size happen in a "wireless" age like we live in now. The 2003 storms caused serious problems (major GPS and other navigation outages, for example), but a once-in-100-years event will probably do much worse.

To those of us in this research area, that New Scientist article was very thinly disguised propaganda. It was a pretty cheap shot and factually wrong in some places (not with regards to solar storms and their consequences, but with regards to science missions), but a clever move nonetheless.

My 2c. Now back to thoughts of spring bass.... :)

Thanks for the info MrWrinkle. I agree, it was definitely over the top on the alarmist angle. However, You would never get an unbiased article into the news. LOL
