Just got into raised bed gardening this year.  Put up 4- 4x8 beds, and just planted my first set of onions, and some peas.  I feel so manly!!!!!  Anyway, I was also interested in growing some broccoli, but read online that it's best to use plants that have been started 6-8 weeks inside.  With that being the case, where does one get those starter plants, and any information and/or opinion on broccoli or cauliflower would be appreciated.  Am fishing for VEGGIES this time.

Thanks-

Jamie

I have grown broccoli before.  It is very hardy.  I planted some seeds and they did not come up so I bought some starter plants from walmart and they grew quite well, then the seeds came up.  We had a lot of broccoli.  Keep it cut regularly and you will have lots to eat.  My 8 year old loves broccoli and other veggies, he is always in the garden raiding plants.  Hope this helped.

Sweet.  Thanks.  I was wondering where to get some starter plants.  The internet is so expansive when it comes to most things.  I planted onions today and peas, and my daughter (3) had such a fun time.  It was Awesome!  Thanks for your response.  I will check Walmart tomorrow, and possibly a few local stands/places first too.

I am new to all this, so anything I hear is new.

Thanks again-

Internet--best friend/worst enemy.  Some places say throw seeds in, and others say starter plants a must...very confusing.  If it's as easy as seeds/starter plants, I should be OK.  I think????

hjerk you should probably check out a local feed and supply store.  Depending on your area, they may be starting to roll out starter plants depending on your area's temps.  Sometimes those places will have a better quality supply of plants than what Wal-Mart will have.

We have a greenhouse that we start some of our veggies in.  Have some onions going along with other things.  Tried starting some lettuce this year that was doing well until it got over 100 in the ghouse this week and wilted it.

THX.  There are a few local stands that I will be checking today.  If they don't have any, I will check Walmart.  I'd imagine I will find some threw locals first though.  Thanks for the response.  Like I said, my daughter is really enjoying planting...and even more will enjoy grabbing veggies off the plants and eating them while she's playing.  Strawberries also crossed my mind today??????

you have to keep Broccoli picked or it will do what they call "bolt" same for lettuce I think.

As far as plants or seeds it depends on your growing season. Broccoli is a cool seaso crop so you have to get it ready to pick quickly before it gets really hot out or it will "bolt" anyway.

Strawberries are fun. You can buy plants from a local source or you can get them earlier from seed catalogs. The ones that get shipped from catalogs are kind of like onion sets. They are shipped in a "domant " state if I remember right.

Have fun the kid will love them. Cherry tomatoes are great for kids. They can just go out and help themselves. Be careful though as they will help themselves to all of them.

Cucumbers are very easy but rememeber that a little is a lot with cucumbers. They produce tons from just a few plants.
