jack1 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 It's early in the morning and I just got done watching a documentary on extraterrestrials and the possible link between them and the numerous religions and architectural mysteries that are spread throughout our world. I consider myself as a very rational and fairly open minded person and the more I continue to watch this documentaryI'm really scratching my head and it's really got me wondering if this theory is possible. If indeed all this is truethe vast amount of evidence and unexplained coincidence linked towards the extraterrestrial or unknown is unbelievably staggering. How in the world could western science, which does not have a definitive answer to these mysteries, turn a blind eye toward this and ridicule others when they themselves do not have answers?! So far, certain evidence cannot be debunked. The Western culture has turned the subject on Aliens or the unknown as a source of entertainment, while the rest of the world views it totally differently. People fear not being in the mainstream, being different, and it's a joke to most and the majority would sayseeing is believing or show me concrete evidence. Why is that million worldwide embrace the idea of a higher being in religious faith, which afterall is based on your personal belief, and yet these very same people laugh and ridicule about the idea of life outside of our world?! Now, I'm not saying Bigfoot and the Lockness monster is real, I'm no Star Wars/Star Trek fan, I'm just simply stating that from watching this documentaryit's got me scratching my head and I found myself actually intrigued with this approach. Think outside the box. Okay, it's late...I got to hit the sack. Quote

Triton21 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 How arrogant would it be of us to think that we are the only lifeforms in the universe with all the planets that are out there. I believe. Quote
atx_newbie Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Considering that new species are discovered almost every day in the oceans and rainforests, I'd say it's a pretty foolish statement to say that there aren't species we haven't discovered somewhere in the vastness of the universe. That being said, I don't understand why people always imagine aliens as little green creatures with outstanding technology. If all life began around the same time, then why would another civilization be so much more advanced than ours? Of course, there was that 1000 year period of the middle ages when technological advancement basically ceased in all areas except warfare, so... Quote
deadeye32. Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 A 5th grader at our school did his science fair project titled "why aliens exist". Not "do aliens exist", but "Why". I thought it was hilarious. The front of his poster board had a picture of an actual alien skull he found on the internet. The conclusion of the experiment ended by saying "with all the pictures on the internet and unexplained events around the world. Aliens are proven to be real." lol Quote
ROCbass Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Fullspectrum, what was the name of the documentary you were watching? I would like to see it. As for my own view on if aliens exist, I think that given the sheer number of solar systems in the universe, there is bound to be planets besides our own with an environment capable of supporting life. I am 99% confident that there are other life forms out there, some with intelligence equal to or surpassing our own. The remaining 1% is due to the lack of concrete evidence that proves it. Now, if the question is whether we have ever had visitors from another planet, I am far more skeptical, because not having proof of something that may be billions of light years away is one thing, but not having proof of something right in our own backyards is quite another. I still believe the idea is plausible though. Quote

-HAWK- Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 One thing that must be taken into consideration when asking DO you believe in Extraterrestrial life is. E.T can be anything from a little green man to a trace of bacteria. With the sheer size of the universe, I would think the odds of at least one planet capable of supporting single celled life is pretty good. It would be beyond Ignorant to say E.T does not exist. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 It's not a question of whether or not intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe. It's a question of when. There are probably hundreds of billions of planets in our galaxy that are relatively similar to our planet - meaning approximately the same distance from a star that is similar to our sun. Our galaxy is only one of hundreds of billions in the universe. However, many of these galaxies are hundreds of millions, even billions, of light years away from us. That means if we could decode some of the light reaching us from a distant planet, and we were able to see intelligent life, that just means that there was intelligent life on that planet hundreds of millions of years ago. That doesn't mean they currently exist. Further, what good would it do if we knew they existed now, because they are 100 million light years away? The whole topic just blows my mind. Plus, we really aren't able to conceive of what 100 million light years is. Light travels at (I believe) 186,000 km/second. A light year is how far light travels in a year. Multiply that distance by 100 million and try to think about that distance. No doubt intelligent life exists or existed or will exist elsewhere in our universe, but what good does it do to know that? Super User .ghoti. Posted March 9, 2009 Super User Posted March 9, 2009 Let's put some numbers on it. The best general estimate for the numbers of stars in the Milky Way is around 200 billion. Let's posit 1% as being similar to our own star; we now have 2 billion. Again, let's use 1% as the number of these stars which have planets. That gives us 20 million stars with planets. Again, 1% for the number of planets in the correct orbit to have liquid water. 200 thousand planets capable of supporting life, as we know it. It's rather preposterous, and supremely egotistical, for us to presume that we're the only game in town. Quote
NaterD Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 -Even if the conditions for life are right, aren't the odds of molecules coming together to make a life form astronomically small? This being said... is it safe to assume we evolved? :-/ I dunno... Quote
Super User flechero Posted March 9, 2009 Super User Posted March 9, 2009 This being said... is it safe to assume we evolved? Neither side has a "perfect explanation" that we all can understand and both explanations require some faith (in science or God) but either way I think the answer to your question is no, it's not a safe assumption. I heard a guest speaker give a stand in discussion at church a couple years ago when our Pastor was off... he presented both the scientific arguments and the Genesis explanations to that question. He discussed the science and lack of science in each aspect. Some of it was very surprising. He is not a Pastor/Preacher. look at the first one all the way at the bottom, from 1/7/2007 http://www.templebiblechurch.org/sermons/sermons.asp I hope this doesn't get deleted, as this post does NOT promote, endorse or sponsor faith (or science) but something I hope anyone interested in the "facts" of the arguments, will make up their own minds after hearing the facts of each side presented. I hope so too, it's been awhile since I last saw something on television that really got me picking at my brain. Anyways the documentary was called; "Ancient Aliens" for those who have not seen it yet and here's the link to the schedule for upcoming show. http://www.history.com/shows.do?action=detail&episodeId=416574 Quote
GLADES Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I watched "ancient aliens" last night. It is basically a rehashing of the "Chariots of the gods" by Erich Von Daniken. It is very interesting to think about how the ancients were able to cut laser straight lines in granite blocks that weigh thousands of pounds. Or, drill perfectly straight holes that today would have needed diamond tipped drill bits. Personally, it is possible that we are being visited by aliens although I have never seen anything. There are two other theories that are interesting as well. One is that there have been 4 different civilizations and near extinctions of man during the earths history. The other is time travel. In this theory, the ancient astronauts are actually people from the future going back in time. Can anyone say "Giant Hadron Collider?" There is a russian theoretical scientist that thinks that this technology might be close to creating a time travel device. Another mind warping show is "parallel universes" - In essence, our universe is a bubble of matter between two planes of time/space. Our reality is just one of thousands of possibilities. Tough for me to wrap my mind around that. I guess that means I could be bass fishing at the Stick marsh and Falcon Lake at the same time....yipee! Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Evolution and the belief in God are compatible if you consider that 7 God days could be 50 million, or some large number, of human years. He could have been tinkering with us, working on perfecting us... That's not to say I believe that, but the two belief systems are not mutually exclusive. Quote
Scorcher214 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 the universe is big, and that's a gargantuanesitologicalimsitiscal understatement. to think we are the only one on the field is stupid, I E.T.s i also believe that ancient cities and stuff were built with the help of E.T.s, they might have helped knowing that early civilization would perceive them as gods, or whatever, to where as today, they are checking up on us, maybe we are and experiment, maybe we are the aliens, maybe, there are multiple universe, we just cant see that far, maybe we are the only life forms in this place. truth is, we may think we know a lot about space, but we don't, we don't know jack squat. Super User Hookemdown. Posted March 10, 2009 Super User Posted March 10, 2009 7 God days could be 50 million, or some large number, of human years. This is what I believe. I have no problem in believing that the Earth is billions of years old. A billion years is just a drop in the bucket if you really think about it. I think we know so little about what is really out there that it is somewhat pathetic. I believe. Quote
