Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 17, 2009 Super User Posted March 17, 2009 you were fishing 100-200 yards from shore and HAD to swim for the bank or had to crawl back into the boat. I was just thinking of things while fishing today and the thought of swimming for the shore crossed my mind. Many of us do not wear a life jacket unless the motor is on and we're hauling booty. I know how to use my shirt or pants as a live jacket but I'm sure many don't. How long can you tread water and how far can you swim if you had to? Quote
1inStripes Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Well, at least the wife and kids would be in good shape if I had to swim that far. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted March 17, 2009 Super User Posted March 17, 2009 As of last week, I know i can climb back into the boat while: Holding a loomis dropshot rod in one hand, and sunglasses in the other. I was wearing boots, 3 layers of clothes including rain gear, 51 degree water. It sucked. I could swim 200 yards alot easier than I could run it these days, lol. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 17, 2009 Author Super User Posted March 17, 2009 That sucks Bizz but at least you held on to the rod and glasses. Quote
bmadd Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I've easily swam that for before while pulling my jackass buddy's boat back after a day of crappie fishing in the wind and only one battery in the boat. 53* water. REALLY sucked Quote
GLADES Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 The worst thing you can do is panic. I would swim as far as I could then swim on my back for a while to recover. Then keep swimming some more until I reach shore. Hopefully there would not be any gators to wrestle. I recently had to swim test 50 yards fully clothed in 2 minutes. The added drag definately makes it tougher. When boating, I always have the vests on while underway and then take them off while fishing. Quote

With a BMI of your level you could float and just let the wind blow you 200 yards to shore Quote

Siebert Outdoors Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 sure could. I could swim that far with no problem. The thing that would get you and fast is the cold water right now. Hypothermia would kill ya before a 200yd swim. Quote
atx_newbie Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 This reminds me of a great blonde joke: A brunette, a redhead, and a blonde were stranded on an island 15 miles from shore. The brunette decided to make a swim for it. She made it 4 miles before drowning. Next, the redhead gave it a try. She did a little better, making it 6 miles before drowning. Finally, all alone, the blonde decided to try the swim. She made it 10 miles, decided it was too far, so she turned around and swam back. Quote

I don't hate fat people (just you), I dated my ex for 3 years right? :-X. 200 yards is a long way. I know I would probably struggle, but 90% of the time I dont fish that far away from the shore. If I ever had to jump ship while the big motor wasn't on, it would only be a 50 yard swim at most. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted March 17, 2009 Super User Posted March 17, 2009 It's not the swim. We lost two guys several years ago that were prefishing on toledo Bend in February for our Bass-N-Bucks tournament the following day. They called 911 about noon Saturday and said that they were taking on water. One was found on Monday and the other the following Wednesday. BOTH were wearing life jackets and still had them on. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted March 17, 2009 Super User Posted March 17, 2009 In my younger days I would swim a mile a few times every summer. I can still swim pretty good so I could swim 200 yards, though with clothes on it would definitely be tougher. As others have said, hypothermia is the killer. In my area right now, the water is just getting into the 40s. I would not want to be in that water no matter how far I could swim. Quote
slomoe Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I could swim 200 yards alot easier than I could run it these days, lol. X2 Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I could do a mile without trouble right now so 200 yards would be no problem. That being said, I'm young, in good shape, and a strong swimmer. In fifteen or twenty years will I be able to... we'll see Quote
Big Mike in Fl Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 well, first of all, almost all of the water I fish is 3-4, at most maybe 5 feet, and I'm 6'4" so I don't have to worry about swimming it, but more walking it. my bigger problem would be the gators. I know they'd see my lineman sized self as an all you can eat buffet my fishin buddy and a game warden got into it one day because an inflatable isn't considered as one of the legal floatation devices unless it is actually on the body, the game warden, trying to be a smart *** asked what my buddy would do if he fell out of the boat with out it on, to which he replied "STAND UP!" Hypothermia would kill ya before a 200yd swim. X2 I run and swim alot if the water was relatively warm I am sure I could swim quite a bit further than that. And much, much further with a PFD. Quote
dimmg Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I swam 2200 meters tonight for practice I think I would be able to do it...I am a triathlete that does mainly Ironman 70.3 distance races. Quote
Captain Obvious Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 If the water wasn't below thirty I could do it, it be like child's play But it the water is near thirty your better of staying near the boat because nothing is going to chill you down faster than a swim I lost a very close friend about three years ago due to hypothermia found him 100 yds from shore And it is harder to swim with a PFD on Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 18, 2009 Super User Posted March 18, 2009 If the water wasn't below thirty I could do it if the water was below 30°, you could walk on it Quote
