Super User burleytog Posted March 11, 2009 Super User Posted March 11, 2009 http://www.tobaccofreekids.org/research/factsheets/pdf/0343.pdf Tax increases on 4/1! Yay! :
drmnbig Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 If it keeps 1 kid from turning into a cancer breathing machine then it's worth every penny!
Super User Sam Posted March 11, 2009 Super User Posted March 11, 2009 Big Burley, The numbers will be true if the sales number remain stable. When you increase the price, you know the sales fall so the expected tax revenues do not develop as planned. We never hear about the loss of tax dollars when products are taxed. Seems governments don't publicize that data. But that's OK. Phillip Morris has a strong overseas market and they are growing tobacco in South America, not the USA. Progress. They call it progress. ;D ;D ;D
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 11, 2009 Super User Posted March 11, 2009 I need to start wearing Depends already to prevent seepage. Philip Morris already rasied their prices and I had to pay 4.42 for a pack of Marbs this morning and that is without the tax increase yet....
Fisher of Men Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I'm not knocking you guys, but you need to quit! I know it's hard (I smoked through the latter part of HS and college), but setting 4/1/09 as the day you never pick up another one is a great idea. Please consider it.
Super User South FLA Posted March 11, 2009 Super User Posted March 11, 2009 Can't wait till they start taxing ammo, so those of us who like hunting or shooting can't afford to do it. I guess someone has to pay for spending gone out of control! Does tax on tobacco apply to Indian Reservations?
Eddie Munster Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Seriously, I don't smoke and think people that do need to quit but this is freakin' ridiculous. You want to tax something, tax hemmorroid creme so all the politicians will have to pay. They're a real pain.........
Tokyo Tony Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I'm so furious with everything the government is doing lately. They're sticking their noses everywhere they shouldn't be. I'm definitely glad I quit - 2.5 months without a single drag ;D However, I've been chewing Nicorette non-stop, so I'm not really saving any money :-/

I guess someone has to pay for spending gone out of control! Does tax on tobacco apply to Indian Reservations? Rumor has it, the plan in many states (and proposed federally) is to re-call and destroy all ammo and then reproduce new ammo with ID numbers. Talk about increasing prices. I guess they figure with the "right to bear arms" they can't go after our guns, they might as well control us by the ammunition. If you possessed "unregistered" ammo, you would be committing a crime.
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 so when is the cig black market going to start?
ROCbass Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I need to start wearing Depends already to prevent seepage. Philip Morris already rasied their prices and I had to pay 4.42 for a pack of Marbs this morning and that is without the tax increase yet.... $4.42 isn't really anything to complain about. This summer NY raised the state cigarette tax to $2.75 a pack, my smoking friends are paying close to $8 a pack now. with the federal tax increasing as well it will probably be over $8 after April 1
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 11, 2009 Super User Posted March 11, 2009 8 dollars a pack? It would be a lot cheaper to just smoke something better for that price :-X
Super User Raul Posted March 11, 2009 Super User Posted March 11, 2009 8 dollars a pack? It would be a lot cheaper to just smoke something better for that price :-X And you can grow your own.
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 11, 2009 Super User Posted March 11, 2009 Hmm... Ever eat a double cheeseburger with Biggie fries and a Coke? At least around here, if we taxed fat people per pound overweight, our budgets would never be in deficit. Fat is a much bigger health concern than smoking. :
slomoe Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I'm glad I quit when I did. I still don't agree with the new ban here in VA though....

daviscw Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I just think its funny the government tries to jack up prices and limit one of the biggest revenues in our nation while in a recession. If they really want money they should tax marijuana.
Super User Tin Posted March 11, 2009 Super User Posted March 11, 2009 If they really want money they should tax marijuana. Legalize it nationwide, and sell pack a pack of joints for $50 ;D It would definitely help the fast-food industry.

Tokyo Tony Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 If parents of a newborn baby smoke a pack a day each, and (IF-$4.00 used for simple math) the pack costs about $4.00...if they put the money they would be buying cigarettes into the bank, then in 18 years, that couple would have about $52,000 in the Bank. Couldn't imagine having a child ready to head off to college, or trade school, knowing that I could have put away so much money...instead of smoking. It's a tough habit (I have heard) and can cost a lot of over a lifetime, physically, as well as financially. If you choose to smoke, then pay the price...out of the wallet, and with a shorter (sometimes) life. My opinion may not be popular, and I do truly hope if you do smoke, that you could kick the habit. If you wish to smoke, and do, then accept the consequences of that behavior. Not at all perfect here, just the Number one controllable risk factor there is regarding Heart Attacks, Strokes and many Cancers. Good Luck...... I will not get entagled into any Governmental debates or War of Words. I simply choose not to smoke that's it. With a family and kids, time here is limited, so I want to have as much as I can. You really can't understand how good cigarettes are unless you've been a legitimate smoker. I hate when non-smokers judge smokers. When you're tired, they perk you up. When you're anxious or nervous, they relax you. When you're hungry, they stave off the hunger. When you've just eaten, they relax your stomach and your soul. After certain physical activities, they're like an amazing dessert. They're a cure-all. Plus, no one can deny it: cigarettes are cool ;D I think another factor besides physical and mental addiction that makes it tough to quit smoking is that it isn't guaranteed that smoking will shorten your life. I definitely miss cigarettes, and I can't say for sure I'll never smoke again. It's kind of scary how powerful the addiction is. For now, at least, I plan on being a life-long Nicorette chewer 8-)
tyrius. Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 When you're tired, they perk you up. When you're anxious or nervous, they relax you. When you're hungry, they stave off the hunger. When you've just eaten, they relax your stomach and your soul. After certain physical activities, they're like an amazing dessert. They're a cure-all. That's what drugs do. Why this drug is legal and other drugs aren't still leaves me confused. I think another factor besides physical and mental addiction that makes it tough to quit smoking is that it isn't guaranteed that smoking will shorten your life. That's true, but it GREATLY increases your odds of dying early.
Tokyo Tony Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Nicotine is a drug, for sure. It doesn't have mind-altering effects, however, and it doesn't impair your judgment or motor skills. Plus, it's been used longer than Europeans have been here. I think that's why it's legal and pot, for example, isn't. Now alcohol, on the other hand, is a different story. I think you could argue what you did with alcohol, but not cigarettes.
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 11, 2009 Super User Posted March 11, 2009 Okay, just trying to lighten up the discussion, not really using this to prove a point, but it is entertaining: http://www.freedom2choose.info/smokers.php 8-)
