Super User Long Mike Posted February 20, 2009 Super User Posted February 20, 2009 I've found it very interesting that the great majority of all polls on this site are initiated by folks in their teens and twenties. I'm very curious as to why younger people start polls, yet more mature people ask straight questions. I confess that I am woefully ignorant and would appreciate some intelligent insight. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted February 20, 2009 Super User Posted February 20, 2009 A lot of youngsters like to be in line with the status quo of their peers. One of our most successful tools at Job Corps is peer mediation .Peer pressure is enormous and can be very intimidating to a free thinker. Many, not all young people are very self conscious about being cool and accepted.Once a youngster gets to understand themselves better most become Okay with choices made that are more to their own standards and worry less about what the majority of their peers think. So I would imagine there is safety in numbers when putting a poll up Quote

drmnbig Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 His real name is DOCTOR INNUENDO It took me reading this about 3 times to get it. Needless to say when I did I just about choked from laughing so hard. Quote

MitchIsFishin Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Real men don't need the KY jelly. Synthetic grease, the only way to go. Clouds in your urine - you're going to die. Drop two 20's in the can on the way out & send in the next patient............ Quote
Eddie Munster Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I'm a proctologist specializing in cranial/rectal inversion treatment. So the reason some people have a crappy outlook on life is because they have their head up their butt? What's that called? Optical-rectumitis? I think the reason it's the younger people starting the polls is because they aren't set in their ways yet. Still developing their opinions on issues whereas us guys (35 +) pretty much have our philosophies set in stone. We can change our minds but only on trivial stuff; nothing major. Quote

BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted February 20, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted February 20, 2009 Mike, The Internet users can be grouped into 2 broad segments: the "adopters" and the "natives". The "adopters" are people over age 30 who didn't grow up with the Internet. They use the Internet primarily to perform tasks such as reading e-mail, paying bills, or researching. When considering making a purchase, for example, they're more apt to research reviews from established sources to help guide them through their choices. The "natives", on the other hand, are under 30 years old, grew up with the Internet and other technologies such as cell phones, and use them primarily as an extension of their social lives. They use technology to keep in touch with their friends. They tend to lend more credence towards the opinions of their peers rather than established sources when making decisions. As such, group consensus has a greater influence and has a more meaningful impact to them. Hope that helps! Quote
Fisher of Men Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 In addition to Glenn's great explanation, many youth-oriented magazines and websites contain many polls. I'm sure there is some self-worth in creating one of your own. Quote
Super User flechero Posted February 20, 2009 Super User Posted February 20, 2009 I always wondered why the "natives" ask for opinions of equipment they just bought as opposed to asking for input before making the purchase. In some ways I see this in our society... quite often the "youngsters" seek validation instead of guidance. I see a lot of this in my younger brothers and younger friends. But with the older friends and brother, I see them seeking guidance before doing something, and being confident in what is already done. any good "everything else" thread deserves a shot at team pampers or depends, right? Is it just a coincidence that native and naive are only a letter off? Quote
