bass wrangler569 Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 I have slowly came to the conclusion that we need far fewer colors for lures than we think we do. This got me to thinking, what colors are an absolute must and what colors are more niche or special situation colors? Obviously you need several colors to account for variations and water clarity and also forage base. So, what colors do you think are absolutely necessary for each lure type? Here are mine: Plastics: green pumpkin, junebug, watermelon, black, white Spinnerbaits/buzzbaits: white, chartreuse/white, chartreuse, firetiger, black jigs: black and blue, green pumpkin, brown, white crankbaits/jerkbaits: chartreuse/black back, shad, baby bass, bluegill/bream, crawfish topwater: bone (white), black, frog, baby bass Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 13, 2008 Super User Posted June 13, 2008 Man, I think you have hit the nail on the head! Color is way overrated. I like green or more generally, "dark", but white and chartreuse are sometimes key. Plus, you gotta have a little red to make your tacklebox pretty! 8-) Quote
mrmacwvu1 Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 with rw on this one got rid of 90% of my stuff lights and dark i think the rest are better are catching fishermen then fish Quote
hawgchaser Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 The majority of my fishing is done on a clear lake. If I am fishing plastics they are either watermelon or pumpkin. I have even gone to watermelon crankbaits with much success. But I think your colors are spot on and pretty much all I throw. Sometimes things dont make since though, I use light colored topwaters except buzzbaits I prefer black. Go figure.... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 13, 2008 Super User Posted June 13, 2008 Well, I don't want to be misleading. I have a lot of lures and every color, but at least 75% ( maybe 95%?) have never been used. I test all my hardbaits when I buy them to be sure they run true, but for the most part, that's the only time they have ever been wet! Let's just say, I'm a collector. : 8-) Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 13, 2008 Super User Posted June 13, 2008 Jigs: blue/black, black, green, orange/brown Plastics: greens, browns, junebug Spinnerbaits: white, chart, chart/white, black About the only time I buy something like bubblegum is when I take my daughters to buy baits with me. jivey Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Jigs:blue/black, black, green, orange/brown Plastics: greens, browns, junebug Spinnerbaits: white, chart, chart/white, black About the only time I buy something like bubblegum is when I take my daughters to buy baits with me. Couldn't agree more... here in MN at least, most of the lakes around the central part of the state have very dirty water and these color patterns seem to be the only ones that work. When I go up north, some of the more natural colors get used, but not very frequently. Quote
boomdigity Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Jigs: Black/Blue, Brown, Green, White Spinners: White/chart, White, Black Buzz: White Plastics: Try to stay as natural as possible Hardbaits: Try to stay as natural as possible Bait monkey hits me hard in the plastics I have more diffrent color worms that have never seen the water but once to see what it looks like. Super User roadwarrior Posted June 13, 2008 Super User Posted June 13, 2008 when are you guys using white? When the bass seem to be focused on chasing minnows. Although I believe "color is overrated", we all know that there are times when an exact shade of a particular color is the ticket. When white is working, usually no other color will. 8-) Quote
mrmacwvu1 Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 i used to be a collector as well however i was one of those guys that took everything in the world to the lake with me after awhile i got tired of wasting time moving stuff around and money on stuff just to look at i throw white all of the time spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, grubs and flukes buzzbaits all soft plastics are darker by far i think the profile and presentation of the bait are the most important ps i lied i still have tons of jerkbaits in every color mainly because they are my favorite to throw and look at same as jigs Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted June 13, 2008 Super User Posted June 13, 2008 Only thing I would add is a more subtle topwater color. Add some clear baits Quote
TournyFish001 Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 yeah the more natural the better especially up here in the northwest. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted June 13, 2008 Super User Posted June 13, 2008 with rw on this onegot rid of 90% of my stuff lights and dark i think the rest are better are catching fishermen then fish x2 Quote
Zel Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 BLACK in just about everything plastic. SILVER in almost all hardbaits. Quote
Big-O Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Wrangler, I too agree with your basic color chart info. I keep colors basic depending on the day and water conditions. I try to focus more on style/bait selection, location and presentation. www.ragetail.com Quote
