Super User burleytog Posted February 12, 2009 Super User Posted February 12, 2009 Had a strong storm rip through the area this evening, power went out around 5:45. Ever tried sitting in the dark twiddling your thumbs for five hours? Tis the only time my job sucks. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted February 12, 2009 Super User Posted February 12, 2009 We've got some killer winds here right now. One of the neighbor's large pines broke and busted a power pole, sparks flying everywhere, transformer exploding. The tree caught on fire which started the other trees burning. It then started raining and put out the fire. The neighbors were the only ones to lose power for the time being. Pretty crazy here at the homestead this evening. My outdoor weather station is showing gusts in the 60 mph+ range right now. Quote
Big Tom Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Had some bad winds down this way too. A bunch of the trees that were weakened from the ice storm are on the ground now. My power was out for five whole minutes so I can't complain too much. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted February 12, 2009 Author Super User Posted February 12, 2009 We've had gusts around 50 MPH. Played enough blackjack and five card draw tonight to last me for three years. To give you an idea of how dark it gets here when we have no power, close your eyes and put on a black hood. Then walk into a darkened room. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 12, 2009 Super User Posted February 12, 2009 We didn't lose power but we had some very strong gusts and a short period of torrential rain. My roommate had a fan in his window and the wind coming in the window was overpowering the fan motor and reversing the direction of the blades. Needless to say his room got a little wet. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted February 12, 2009 Super User Posted February 12, 2009 We arent focusing on the bigger issue. Burley was playing blackjack and poker, not solitaire. That means some poor soul was alone, with burley, during a power outage. Quote
IDbasser Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 That sucks, we have been been having weird weather here too. Quote
drmnbig Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 It was definitely a crazy storm last night. We lost power for about 5 minutes. We were the last house on the street that came on then. Everything above us was still out when I went to bed last night. Lights were on this morning though. Quote
Daniel A. Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 That means some poor soul was alone, with burley, during a power outage. Any survivors? ;D Quote
1inStripes Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Luckily no power outage here. It did blow so hard that water was forced into the house at the bottom of the door facing. Quote
TheBeast Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Didn't get much at the store before I left for the evening around 5:30. Got home a 6" tree down across the driveway nothing much else power flickered a few times. Got to the store this morning didn't see any evidence of anything much, strange since I am only a few mile from where Burley works and settin right in the corridor between the mountains that all the weather comes through before it gets to him. Don't know if the power went out here at the store or not, but my new computer wouldn't work this mornin when I got here. Called Dell apparently power supply is crapped out. Still under warranty but they can't get the part to the service center and get anything done till tommorow. Luckily had an old comp at home I can use. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted February 12, 2009 Super User Posted February 12, 2009 Lots of businesses closed down here today due to fallen trees on power lines. I guess we got lucky at home, the power just flickered off and on a few times. Pretty cool and scary watching those trees burn last night. I was standing about 50 yards away when that transformer blew last night. I nearly shite my pants. ;D Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 12, 2009 Super User Posted February 12, 2009 Had a strong storm rip through the area this evening, power went out around 5:45. Ever tried sitting in the dark twiddling your thumbs for five hours? Tis the only time my job sucks. That don 't happen oftenly down here but when it does ....... Raul and Lil Raul do have a fight for the Nintendo DS. Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted February 12, 2009 Super User Posted February 12, 2009 The power stayed on here, but I do have a small pond in my back yard now. Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 As an American Red Cross Emergency Services manager for two counties, you better believe that I watched the storm like a hawk! In our area we had trees fall through three houses, windows and siding off of a few businesses/buildings, and a 20 car train derailment in addition to the 7,500 without power through the night. Its been a busy 24 hours!..and yesterday was my wife's birthday...yikes! Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Any of you guys go fly fishing yesterday? Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted February 12, 2009 Super User Posted February 12, 2009 :'( Dude, you need to man up. We've still got power outages since the ice storm, which was two weeks ago. Virginians are so weak. : Quote
