daviscw Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 You'd think he would have learned better after his D.U.I. http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/swimming/news/story?id=3876804&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines Quote
Bassboy15 Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 He's going to be banned from the 2012 olympics... There's a list of drugs that will get you banned, and pot is one of them... Quote
mattm Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Not exactly. He admitted to smoking out of a pipe that is usually used for marijuana. He stopped very short of saying that it was marijuana in the pipe. For all we can tell from his statement it could of been cat turds just as easy as marijuana. Quote

Personally I could care less what the man does in his personal life. Its too bad he coudn't use some discretion. He should have known better and he'll pay for it. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 I doubt he will be banned for it, if he was competing and tested then yeah. On his time outside of competition or training, no. I think it is becoming necessary to be a felon or a thug to compete in sports now. Quote

SuskyDude Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I think it is becoming necessary to be a felon or a thug to compete in sports now. The guy made a couple of mistakes. I wouldn't call him a "thug", which would kinda implies that he's involved in organized crime. I wouldn't lump Phelps with that group of athletes. Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I have no use for this guy... next... Quote
aceman387 Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 so much for his clean cut all american image, just think how much endorsement money just went down the drain. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 Yeah, what a waste. Even if he doesn't get disqualified or tested or anything, he will still lose endorsements. I've heard he really just let the fame go to his head since the Olympics and that he's been acting like a wide-receiver ever since. Quote
srv1990 Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 How utterly unfortunate that he's a human being and made some mistakes... thankfully I haven't made any in my life. Hopefully he will start to make better decisions before something with more serious, long-term effects happens. Quote
SMSRTC Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I think it's being blown out of proportion. It was a bonehead move to make, especially at a party with plenty of people around, from the description. By now, he should know that he is a public figure, and he can't get away with what a normal person can. I actually have more disdain for the opportunist that took the picture and ran to a gossip rag(s) to cash in. Since the party happened in November, and it's just being reported now, I have to wonder if they were polling various rags to try to get the highest price. Of course, I could be wrong, and it was just an outraged citizen that couldn't sit on the picture any longer (but I doubt it). As far as getting banned, it doesn't seem that likely since it wasn't during a period of competition and it's not a preformance enhancer, more like the opposite of one. It'll still hurt him financially though. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 More proof that there is no shortage of stupid... :-X Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 No one ever said Michael Phelps is smart. What he did was extremely bad judgement. Probably caused by peer pressure. Bye bye endorsements. I hope he has a college degree so he can get a job out of swimming. > Quote
Pitchinkid Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 wow. he smoked weed. Did you ever here this guy talk. How did you not know he was smoking pot. One of the worlds greatest athletes is a pothead. Maybe legalization is looking better huh.Yeh, its illegal and i guess he made a "mistake". Just be glade it wasn't coke or you would definitely see some world records fall. p.s. Legalize it! Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 Lets see if he was at a party in CA, then he can use the medicinal purposes clause, stuff is great for an upset stomach. I bet he doesn't loose any sponsors or anything. Marijuana is so main stream that most people won't think anything about it at all. How many states have a medicinal clause now? You can stretch that medicinal clause thing a far far way. I just read an artical that CA's medicinal clause on marijuana has really affected the street dealer, the dealer just doesn't have the clientel he once had. Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 Now we know why he was eating 12,000 calories in a day ;D Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 100 million dollars? For swimming? I cannot realistically wrap my head around this. Quote

mase088 Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Its pretty upsetting that people are actually going to antagonize Americas best athlete because he smoked pot. Lets take a hand count of every professional athlete and iconic figure that has ever smoked pot or committed any small crime for that matter and see who's left to still look up too. My guess is nobody. Phelps is still an incredible athlete in my book, although he should of chosen a more interesting sport Quote
mattm Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 His biggest endorsers Speedo and Omega have already came out in support of him. What about the DUI that didn't seem to hurt him? I can't see a 100 million either. Quote
tyrius. Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 ESPN (skip bayless) just estimated Phelps will lose more than 100 million dollars in his life-time over this deal. If somebody was shopping around the photo, maybe they should have went to him first. What's skip bayless know about this? Phelps isn't going to lose much if any sponsorships because of this. He isn't going to be punished by the IOC because he isn't currently in competition therefore is not subject to testing. It's basically over and done with like the non-issue that it really is. Quote
