Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 I dont know if this has already been covered, and I cant find a definitive answer on the search engines.... Why do some NFL guys say places other than where they played college football (i.e. a HS team)? Just curious. Quote
daviscw Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Because they didn't go to college. They went to the NFL before the 1 year (or whatever it is) of college rule. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted February 2, 2009 Author Super User Posted February 2, 2009 But I thought you had to go to college for at least some time before entering the league..... Now I am really confused. :-? Quote
daviscw Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I was trying to say that they skipped college before the rule was implemented. The rule isn't that old. The 1 year of college for the NBA was started after LeBron graduated I think. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 Most of them just didn't graduate and don't have "warm feelings" for the college they attended. What I find more interesting is having so many players from nothing schools. When "discussing" college vs. pro ball, I like to point out that every contest in the NFL is an All-Star game! 8-) Quote
fivesixone Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Any South Park fans here? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD2q87y6tF8 ;D Quote

In fact, I think more than half of the starters last night were from non-BCS schools, and many of the others were from lower tier BCS schools. You will notice, though, that most teams get their secondary from SEC schools. And Ohio State. You can almost bet that any given game will have 2 or 3 starters from Ohio State. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 The NBA has the one year rule that just started. The NFL is 3 years out of high school and its been that way for awhile now. Some just do it to be funny, others to honor their HS. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 2, 2009 Super User Posted February 2, 2009 The rule is not that they have to have played in college for three years, they just have to be out of high school for three years. But mostly the reason is like RW said, they just didn't like their schools for various reasons. LaVar Arrington went to Penn State but he liked to use his high school for his introduction. So does Willie Parker because he was unhappy with his experience at UNC. Quote
bmadd Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Good secondary come from the south east, except Troy P. Florida, Florida State, Miami, LSU. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 3, 2009 Super User Posted February 3, 2009 The guy from LSU just said "Louisiana." Either they cut off his intro too soon or he forgot to say "State University." I thought it was funny. ;D Quote

jeremyt Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I know in some cases ( Antonio Gates ) the players never played college football. Gates did play basketball at Kent State but due to his size was urged to attend the combine. Quote
