I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels it's insane to charge more for shipping if you spend more. They need to seriously revamp there system. I looked at buying a reel in the $60-$150 range and the shipping would just kill any good pricing. They still got my money this time because my family and I went up there for my birthday but they still loose allot of my business because of there crazy shipping charges. It's crazy because I look in there catalogs and visit their website but rarely order from them because of the shipping issue. I usually end up with TW on online orders. I also end up saving a fortune because I don't pay tax or shipping like I do with BPS. On a $50 order of gear it ends up being about a $13 savings. Not to mention it shouldn't cost so much to mail a little reel. To bad BR members don't have some secret free shipping code! ; :'( ;D Quote
Red Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 yes i like TW too, anything over $50 is free shipping, excluding larger items like trolling motors ($15 to ship) and rods and such. i mis typed my card number in once and they called me right away to see what happened cuz it was declined or whatever, gave the proper card number and all was well. if they sold rodbuilding stuff i wouldnt have to shap anywhere else!! I guess it just blows my mind BPS doesn't have a better shipping system. They make many BPS exclusive products and carry a nice selection but I'm not going to pay $6 to ship a $15 pair of fishing gloves. I guess i just feel like I shouldn't ever have to pay more then $5 for shipping unless it's a large item that requires extra postage. I can see rods costing more or heavy items but I should be able to order a reel, gloves, and a few lures and it not cost more then $5 to ship. I guess I'm spoiled TW gives me free shipping on orders over $50. Amazon gives me free shipping on orders over $25 and many places that work with google and ebay offer low to no cost shipping options. The only thing I can figure is they have had the catalog business long before they had the Internet. So they based there shipping prices on the "Catalog fishing market" and just brought that over to the Internet side and that was a mistake. There is allot more competition out there on the Internet and their crazy over priced shipping model is just well crazy! > Quote

I would imagine Tackle Warehouse, being the smaller company, would have a harder time implementing this kind of system. You can order rods from them for free but Bass Pro charges an extra 6 bucks on top of already high rates. Tackle Warehouse has made Bass Pro almost useless for me. Its still a fun place to visit though. Quote

I agree with the others. let's say I wanted a Rico ofr the crazy price of 22.99 and also a TT bluegill for 49.99 then I have to pay around 12.00 to ship a box that weighs around 5 oz??!! I buy locally from BPS and Sportsman's Warehouse. Otherwise, I'm going for "shipping included". BPS and Cabela's need to get with the program, set a minimum for free shipping and make the pricing model permanent, not "special". 8-) Quote
aceman387 Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 i think these big stores have people vamboozled believing that because of there size they have the cheapest prices i always seem to to get the same price or better at the little shop by me, and im in and out of there in a few minutes instead of an hour . i think they hook alot of us because of the selection and depending on youre mood when your in there you get caught up in the shopping frenzy. I think it costs them far more than it makes them in the long run. I spend a couple thousand dollars per year on fishing/hunting and marine related purchases... and now I only shop at BPS when I receive a gift card for b-day or Christmas. Also, BPS prices are no longer so great. Gone are the days of separate "catalog" and retail prices... I pay retail at my local stores... I don't need BPS for that. : Quote

I was told there would not be any shipping charge. Of course, I was discussing ordering two G. Loomis rods, so maybe for that kind of money they will not charge shipping. Just a thought. Quote

If I can't get it locally, I'll get it straight from the manufacturer. Even the BPS stores are getting bad when it comes to selection. The Sevierville store was pretty bare over the weekend. I guess my main complaint with the stores is that they're too big for their own good. It usually takes over a year for a product to hit the shelves. I don't expect to see any of the Bomber Switchback cranks on the local store's shelves before this fall. Same goes for the Quantum KVD cranking rods. Bass Pro is operating on a business model that worked 25 years ago. Quote

My local BPS had some of the KVD cranking rods in stock when I was there a week and a half ago, but the rest of the rods were pretty picked over. I wound up ordering my new rod thru their site and paid $21 in shipping because I was paying with BPS gift cards. Quote

They don't have the overhead of multiple retail stores, employees, and all of the other costs that BPS and Cabela's have. It's easier for them to pass on the savings to us, they don't have to pay for in store aquariums and such (though they are neat to look at !) Burley nailed it saying they are working on an old business model. In our area, JC Penney, Macy's, Boscov's and the like have all died off because they couldn't keep up with the times. Who do you think pays for all of that glitz ? Quote

Going to BPS is always a pretty neat experience but the luster sort of wears off after the first trip. I just wish I had known about Tackle Warehouse about two years ago. Bass Pro has charged me enough in EXTRA shipping costs that I could have bought a couple pretty decent rods. I also kind of wish the people in the stores would be cooler about the internet sales. It took me 30 minutes at the BPS in Cincy to purchase a Crankin' Stick. Then the cashier didn't ring it up as a sale and I had to wait another 15 minutes for them to check again to see if the item was really on sale. I hardly ever complain about service but I was a little frustrated that day. Quote

I'm less than 15 miles from the Atlanta BPS, so I still do a good bit of shopping there, but TW's free shipping over $50 is definitely changing the way I buy tackle. If my order is less than $25, I'll usually order it from BPS because the shipping is cheaper than the two gallons of gas I'd burn going there and back, $25-$49 and I'll just drive to BPS and pick it up, over $50 and I'll order it from TW from now on...unless I can find what I'm looking for on Ebay.
