In view of some of the horrendous storms and disruption of their lives that some of our members are experiencing, how many of you have some sort of a survival plan? This would include, but not necessarily be limited to, having food and water available, heat, power, and other basic necessities. I admit, I am not well prepared. My particular part of the country is not really prone to ice storms or tornadoes, etc. Although we do get them, disruptions are generally short lived. I have a woodburner, so I have heat source in the winter, but I would have no power. Food is probably no more than a couple of days supply, depending on when we last went shopping. A local grocery store recently closed and I noticed that when stocks weren't being replenished, the shelves were empty within a week. A major food supply disruption would empty them faster.

So what do you guys do? Do you store food, water, gasoline?

What's your plan?

Since I always have to be at work for these, and by the way Ice Storms have been becoming more of a repeating event on the Eastern side of PA :-[

I always am in a place that has generators, food and all that. The main worry here is if it goes on two long we have around 600 kids and we have to always keep our heads and make good decisions.

While we have good plans, each storm brings it's own challanges and some of the best laid plans need to be altered.

We were quite prepared after the ice storm hit us. We had all of the prescriptions up to date, about 10 gallons of fuel, plenty of food and water that would have lasted over a week, batteries, radios (even had a CB that I didn't even know we had). We've got a wood stove in our house, so staying warm wasn't a problem.

But, we don't have a generator. You don't necessarily need one, but it would be really nice to have.

Clean water was a big deal around here for the past few days.  The water was horrible, and the county had issued a boil notice.  But, people that still were without electricity (which was about 90% of the town) had no way of boiling their water.

We have hurricanes in S.Florida but I'm prepared as much as I can be.  I have to work during the huricane but I make sure the family is well secured before I leave the house.

Some folks may not like FEMA but they have good suggestions for protecting yourself.  FEMA also offers classes wich can be transferred for college credis to major universities and junior colleges. I've already obtained 30 credits.  FEMA offers information on how to secure your home and how to save money on your insurnce premium.  Check'em out.  www.fema.gov

I am totally unprepared when a hurricane hits down here. My home is within two miles of saltwater so we generally are force evacuated; however, we were not for Ike. Like most of the rest, if forced to leave we do so it makes no sense to stock up. If we are allowed to stay I'm in the long lines at the store stocking up with everyone else.

Up here in earthquake country, we're very prepared. I have 4 red cross emergency kits - enough for 4 people each.  Have an assortment of flashlights, radios, and water.  We also have a 12 person emergency food kit - enough food for 5 days.  We also have earthquake insurance.  The only thing we don't have is a generator - yet.  That's on the list.

One note - be sure to have some cash stashed somewhere, as no store will accept plastic when the power is out.  A lot of people learned that the hard way when we were without power for a week.  Also have plenty of gas for the generator.  No power=no operating gas stations.  A lot of people used up their fuel in 2 days, and then were SOL.

Just has a minor tremor yesterday. A reminder to replace the water stockpile. Nature never sleeps.

shame to say not very prepaired, but I'm gonna work on it. It had me pricing generators.

I seen some crappy things during this ice storm and one really bothers me. >:(

On the generator's, A certain supply store (known nation wide) was selling a 3500 watt for $800 bucks at my local store, I looked on line today and it sells for $350 bucks on thier very own line store  man That is UNCOOL how they took advantage of a situation from people, pees me off, so being that I'm bashing them I won't name them unless its cool by Glenn, but this is very true, I called twice about the price to make sure I didn't miss hear them :o I will not spend a dime there again.

I will say its cool to say Kudo's to Rural King, No gouging that I seen, same price at my local store as it is on the line store, way to be guys  :) straight forward.

That isn't 'taking advantage' of anyone.  It is simple economics.
