Super User burleytog Posted January 30, 2009 Super User Posted January 30, 2009 Got our W-2's today, did a few quick calculations. Going to have to pay again. What the hell does the government want from me? Already claiming 0 on both W-4's and am actually witholding more from my check. > I guess I should be thankful they let me keep what they do. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I dread doing mine, wife works also no kids, guess I have to do my part. When will it stop? Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Burley, The good way of looking at having to pay is someone isnt sitting on your money until they feel like giving it back. More $ stays in your pocket. For me I'd rather have my refund be 0 and have all that money during the previous year. Need to look into different ways of tax write offs. Talk to your tax dude. If they are good enough they will find legal things you can do to write stuff off. Quote
tyrius. Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I'm going to have to increase my withholdings to 9 this year!!! I hate loaning the gov't money, but can't seem to get my withholdings high enough!!! Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Quote Going to have to pay again. What the hell does the government want from me? Your money. Or, THEIR money. Got a job? Great! And you're complaining about what? Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 The gov't has done nothing to "deserve" that much money when they spend it as recklessly as they do, and engage in the corruption that they do. There's nothing we can do about it except start voting some fiscal conservatives in. :-/ Quote
frogtog Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Lots of money calls for lots of taxes. Nothing that ten kids can't cure. ;D Quote

Yeah, and then on April 15th we'll get John Brown to lead a raid on the local federal arsenal. Once we capture that, we can make our own tax laws! Come on, dude. :-? Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted January 31, 2009 Super User Posted January 31, 2009 Just do like I do...Add 10,000, or 20,000 extra miles to the vehicle expense report each year. Glenn, can they trace back to me from this post? Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted January 31, 2009 Super User Posted January 31, 2009 Fishfordollars, the IRS may not be able to trace you from your post, but I can. Send me $10,000 immediately or I'll report you to the IRS for tax fraud. Quote

The_Natural Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I paid way more taxes than I had to for several years. I have always used Turbo Tax, and it's free for the 1040EZ form. You have to pay $29.95 to do the standard 1040 form, which has their 'deduction maximizer'. I used the deduction maximizer this year and last year, and my return was significantly better. You can claim things you didn't know you could claim, and turbo tax makes it extremely easy by just asking you questions. I recommend to anyone that has taxes to do, to use TurboTax and spend the $29.95 to do the full 1040 form (unless you are young, make little money, or someone can claim you as a dependent.) The thing that ticks me off, is you get the same tax break ($2000) whether you spend $6000 or $15000 on tuition. That is the difference between what we paid in tuition last year versus this year (my wife is in grad school). I was expecting a HUGE return because of that. Anything over $4,000 in tuition gets the same tax break. Quote
The_Natural Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Oh yeah; you don't have to pay to use TurboTax until you actually Electronically file them. So basically, you can do the 1040 form with deduction maximizer for free, and if you like it than you can electronically file it and pay the $30. If you didn't use that product, try it and see if you owe less money. It won't cost you anything....only about 1hr of your time. Quote
jimmieO Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I did that with turbotax and taxact. (basically using it for free without filing) Taxact was much better for me...easier to use and helped me find more deductions for a bigger refund, cheaper filing costs. Any refund coming my way is already gone though... Quote
