...are very bad. On occasion after a night of drinking and smoking, some of my friends who smoke menthol cigarettes will cough up a small amount of blood in the morning. Has this ever happend to you?

I think they need to switch to regular cigs or quit smoking all together.

Probably the worst cigarette they can smoke. Aren't they alarmed about the blood ?

I smoked them for years , never had the blood but my lungs were constantly so sore at times it hurt to breath.

I finally had the will power to quit before it was too late.

I've heard that some menthol brands have a history of containing fiberglass.

I would be concerned about blood from the lungs...

I used to smoke cigarettes, never menthol though... If I ever coughed up blood, I'd definitely take that as a sign to quit. Always heard people that smoked Newports talkin' about coughing up blood... Hello!?!?

No, not me. But, with two friends, yes, it happened to them, but it went away once they died.

I once made the mistake of buying a couple of packs of menthols.  Threw them in the tackle bag without looking at them.  Get out on the water, finish a pack, reach into the bag and open a new pack.  Light one up and d**n near fell out of the boat from coughing.

I smoked Salems during most of my smoking years, but gave up some years ago and so far seem to have gotten away with it.

Most of you are too young to remember, but many years ago, when cigarette advertising was allowed and before the dangers were widely known, one menthol brand (Kool) advertised itself as a health benefit.

Their tag line was "Got a cough? Smoke Kools." The menthol was supposed to alleviate the symptoms.

I smoked menthols for a few years in high-school and one in college.  My throat got so cashed that I couldn't take a draw of a menthol with having a coughing/choking fit, but I could take a big draw off of a regular non-filter no prob.  Something ain't right there.

I smoked a pack of menthols a day for five years, and never felt any adverse effects.  In fact, for many of those years I was playing a lot of soccer at a very highly competitive level.  So I can't say why your buddies are coughing up blood.  But I for one laugh at the rumors about menthols.

People always say that there is "fiberglass in menthols" that will "crystalize your lungs."  It reminds me of a scene from a movie, might have been Butch and Sundance.  Two guys are trapped at the end of a cliff, contemplating jumping in a river far below to escape.  They are worried about crocs in the river.  But what they don't realize is that it is the fall is going to kill them.

Cigarettes will kill you, period.  I highly doubt that there is a significant  difference in death rates between menthol and non-menthols.

lol i know what ya mean... ::)

Well I use to smoke menthols for the first year and a half and never really had any lung/throat problems but it seemed to bother my sinuses a lot so I switched to regular lights and I feel fine now. I found out that the couple times my friends coughed up blood it was because they smoked a couple packs of newports a night, not good.

So it looks like the report shows that people who smoke menthols, on average, smoke less than people who smoke non-menthols? That's interesting, because I get really sick and nauseous from non-menthols, but I used to chain-smoke menthols and never felt light-headed or sick.

Edit:  I think it might also depend a lot on the brand of cig that you smoke.  When I was smoking, I always smoked camels.  I never touched a 'port or salem.  That may have something to do with it.

It wasn't crocs.  It was because one of the two, I forgot which, couldn't swim.  The other one said, "hell, the fall will probably kill ya."

my wife smokes newports and has been since i met her.  although she dosent smoke very many,  maybe a pack every two days or so.  i started smoking when i was 14, quite when i was 24 and started dippin, then three years ago when we moved back to texas i started smoking again but only a few a day (menthols from my wife).  i felt like i did back when i smoked a pack or more a day.  my new years resolution was to give them up completely (again) and just stick to my dip.  havent had a smoke since new yaers eve!!  but i do dip a can of grizzly everyday.  i dont think my wife has ever coughed up blood or anything, not to my knowledge anyway.  my highschool english teacher told us he smoked two packs of non filters and a pack of kools for years and years, the kools were to cool his throat from the harsh non filters.  he had quite some years before i was in his class, but he still ATE vicks vapo rub!!!  i aint kiddin ya, a big ol gob of the stuff everyday in class!!!  he said his throat was so tore up from all that smokin that he still had to cool and relieve it.  for anyone interested in quitting dippin, try dippin the tea grounds after you make sweet tea at home, i actually did this for like a week not too long ago, but i love my griz so i went back   ;D

That's a great scene.

Sundance: I can't swim.

I've heard cigarettes have asbestos in them too.  This isn't true, I just made it up.  But menthol or non-menthol, filtered or unfiltered, cigarettes kill!!!!  This isn't being judgemental.  Just a fact.

From wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menthol_cigarette

In addition, the documents supplied during the trial of the tobacco industry mention specific effects of menthol in cigarettes: A cooling, anaesthetic function lessens the sensation of drawing hot gases into the mouth and lungs, while the mintlike flavor of the compound improves the perceived taste and lessens the impact of nicotine's bitter flavor and scent. In a form of tradeoff, however, the menthol is also a source of increased oral and respiratory irritation, though this is somewhat masked by the aforementioned anaesthetic effect (G. Ferris Wayne, Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program, "Application, function, and effects of menthol in cigarettes: a survey of tobacco industry documents", 2004 February).

I think they need to switch to regular cigs or quit smoking all together.

Fixed it for you.
