Tokyo Tony Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I just can't believe the situation this country is in, and I know it is the same with almost all other developed countries as well. Every day I read about more companies doing layoffs, more companies failing, more agencies and companies asking for bailouts. This is pretty scary. Now the post office wants to deliver mail only once a week instead of six days a week because they're so broke. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D960BK9O0&show_article=1 The only piece of positive financial news I've read is that McDonalds' net profits were up 80% in 2008. Makes sense when you think of the dollar menu. Then you have the "economic stimulus package". Nevermind the ridiculous sexual undertones, but I read through some of the 647 pages of the proposed bill, and it doesn't seem like it's aimed at economic stimulus at all. It seems like a handout, at the worst possible time, to agencies and companies that have nothing to do with the economy at all. Agencies like ACORN, for example. I read that $350M is to be allocated for STD prevention. I don't understand???? What's going on? Is Atlas going to shrug? Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 Oh, not to mention all the corruption that's being uncovered. All at once it seems tons of corruption is being investigated, from politicians to ceo's to a CIA officer. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/Story?id=6750266&page=1 What's next? Quote
farmpond1 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Raise your hand if you saw all of this coming. Quote

Tokyo Tony Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 Even at the beginning of this mess, I thought we were invincible. Now I'm starting to have my doubts. All this money is coming from somewhere, and no one tells us. Probably from China (although I heard they're starting to back off of lending us so much money), and just printing money. I don't know about you guys, but when I hear that they're just printing more money, hence making my hard-earned money decrease in value, to give to ACORN and other corrupt firms and agencies, that makes me pretty freakin' angry. What do you guys think is the worst that could happen? Quote

Siebert Outdoors Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 The Postoffice needs to transfer out of the goverments hand imo. Make it just like another UPS, Fedx. I bet the would make a profit then. Then it would also help the GDP. Quote
farmpond1 Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I'm no economist but what is happening to our country at a macro- level is the same as what happens to individuals who get deep in debt (credit cards, loans, etc) and then fall on difficult times. It becomes a cascading or domino effect and it takes a long time to recover. Unfortunately, the irresponsibility and overly optimistic (almost bipolaresque behavior) drags a lot of "innocent" people down with it. Quote

There will always be the wealthy and the poor. IMHO. Quote

MitchIsFishin Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Wow, don't even know IF I should express an opinion here, but I will, and if necessary, Glenn can obviously delete it. Will America eventually collapse? Yes, no doubt about it. Our children and grandchildren will never be in a position to pay off the 'debt' owed. Neither will a missile, nor a bullet be fired to collapse America. It simply won't be necessary. Is our government corrupt? Absolutely! Our government has been corrupt for many decades. It will never change because of the intrinsic nature of 'representing the constituents'. They look for what works for their agenda, part & parcel of their job. You & me are just at the bottom of the totem pole. Will Obama succeed? No & Yes! He will not solve the problems we have by government spending. He WILL succeed by convincing people that government spending is crucial to solving our problems. All, without solving our problems. Government programs will be increased, spending will continue to rise at an enormous rate, and those, later on down the road, will be called upon to pay for it. Am I a pessimist? Yes and no. I have watched many decades of poor leadership (if you could even call it that), poor decisions, decisions made for an agenda contrary to what was in the best interest of America, and now, liars and thieves. With that said, we are in need of a new revolution. Will that happen? No, we are too lazy and content for that. :'( Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I'll take that Post Office volume anyday. Delivering letters as opposed to 150 pound Bowflex machines sounds like a nice idea. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted January 28, 2009 Super User Posted January 28, 2009 maybe the post office should just deliver real mail instead of the crap they bring on a day to day basis. Quote

Super User Muddy Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 This is what happens when you leave the foxes to watch the chickens. This is what happens when we practice a totally free market and expect the rich to act properly This is what some of us wrote was about to happen in a thread last year, and guess what the general consensus was we were acting like chicken little announcing the sky is falling It was right in front of everyone's noses and From Enron to the Sub prime mess, those rich guardian angels were really not so angelic Bottom Line: these rich and powerful folk can not be trusted to do the right thing Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted January 29, 2009 Super User Posted January 29, 2009 Idon't mind the post office working 5 days a week. Most americans only work M-f. Besides, the computer has made paying bills on line easy, which has eleminated the need for as many stamps. Quote

I will bet they took a big hit also in the short note and Post Card dept with Email being faster and cheaper. As the suits like to say they need to "REINIVNET THEMSELVES" Quote
