atx_newbie Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 ESPN did a special on this sport a couple months ago. One of those guys is planning to jump out of a plane and land on the Vegas Strip, without the use of a parachute. He's going to use a large ramp to catch him and slide him down, much the same way motocross jumpers do. I think the premise is plausible, it could work, there is just absolutely NO room for error in it. Either way, when he does it and it's on national TV, I will definitely watch. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 20, 2009 Super User Posted January 20, 2009 Gravity is working against me And gravity wants to bring me down Quote
done Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 man..that would be totally awesome to try. My wife would kill me for even thinking about it, but it would be cool. Quote

Calcutta Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I used to work with a guy that always said "It not exciting if theres no chance of dying while doin it!" when refering to recreational activites. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted January 20, 2009 Super User Posted January 20, 2009 I'm not too proud to admit it.. I don't think my nuts are big enough for that. They must go through a lot of skis. Quote

thetr20one Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Even though the guy who created the first "flight" suit died in when his chute failed, that is about as bad assed of a sport as it gets. when you jump out of a plane you fall strait down like a rock. With these suits they fly like 3-5 miles. If I didn't have a family I would love to try it or even a simple base jump for that matter, but my daughter needs fed and provided for more than my adrenaline junkie self needs the rush. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted January 20, 2009 Super User Posted January 20, 2009 those guys and downhill mountain bikers have got huge, swinging grapefruits in my opinion. I would love to try the flying suits, probably out of a plane instead of off a cliff, but its this stupid, nagging, self preservation instinct i contend with ;D Quote
hjerk24 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 A show on this a few months ago showed a guy that got too close to a bridge, lost his life, as well as other body parts. It was on tape, and all you heard was a thud. Not a very pretty end to a thrill seeking jump. It is pretty neat to watch, and I'd imagine even cooler to experience, but they were pushing the envelope, and it went very bad. Quote
thetr20one Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I also saw a "most horrible" type show where a base jumper didn't get enough clearance and off the face of the cliff and when his chute opened it pretty much slung him into the jagged rock. Dead. Not a cool move. Bizz have you seen the video of the guy trying to set the downhill speed record on a carbon fiber mountain bike? He had on a shiny red suit and helmet. Somebody obviously forgot to tell him about carbon fiber characteristics and the bike broke at the gooseneck at about 100 MPH. He lived but he sure got jacked up! Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted January 21, 2009 Super User Posted January 21, 2009 gnarly, havent seen it. i live just across the road from a state rec area that is incredibly popular with downhill guys. there is something fundamentally wrong with these dude's minds. sure looks like fun when they arent crashing and burning though. Super User fourbizz Posted January 21, 2009 Super User Posted January 21, 2009 God I love those cars. One of my buddies in Wyoming had an '03 STi with a different turbo, intercooler, and a 75 shot . Amazing cars. That driver in that vid is awesome. Quote
thetr20one Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 My wife and I were at a red light and two similiar white wrx's pulled up. I asked the guy beside us who was faster cuz they had track markings on their windows. He said since we both ran 10.2 today I would say we are pretty even. Their only mods were larger turbos, an aftermarket exhaust and recalibrated computers. After wifeys car is payed off this summer. I am gonna try and get her into one. Right now she has a Galant GTZ and it's pretty quick but not 10.2 quick. I have a Tahoe and it's not the quickest anything but it's fun in the snow. And right now we have over a foot of the white stuff everywhere but the roads. the side streets here have a good 4 inches of compacted snow but, main roads are clear. Yeah, watch a few of the Ken Block vids. 530 horsepower all wheel drive. I need a toy like that. I guess my boat is alot of fun though! Quote
