Super User Muddy Posted January 12, 2009 Super User Posted January 12, 2009 The Season is on! 5 of the top 25 are BIG EAST TEAMS, including the current #1.and as time goes on they will me the major division in NCAA for a time to come! It is possible for as many as 10 teams heading for a berth this seaon! St.John's, my team since I was a teenager, is no longer in the mix. The current administration has stated in the news this week that St.Johns is a learning institution NOT A BASKETBALL TEAM. This originally was a reaction to the mess Jarvis left behind, but I see them as eventually withdrawing from Class I ball. I have never jumped ship on the teams i root for, Being a Mets fan you learn to stick with them, even when they stink! However, if they can't ever compete again, I am going to have to pick a new team. I love Big East Ball, and when they added the extra teams, the division has become a bear. Quote
1inStripes Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Wow, you think they will drop down to D2 or something? St. Johns used to be tough back in the late 80s or so. I remember everyone thought they would rise to the top again in the mid 90s when they signed Artest and Lopez. Lopez ended up being a bust. Before they were the Red Storm, what was their nickname, I just can't remember? Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 12, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 12, 2009 The Redmen. I will tell you what happened Carnacessa retired and they hired a bandit named Jarvis, who went so far as having NBA scouts in the locker room! Also a change of administration at St.Johns has a new philosophy that is somehow leaving the basketball program to rot. We lost some scholarships for a while and I believe we have them all back from the Jarvis sanctions, but look who we have lost to St Francis( a girls high school could beat this squad), Rutgers, LIU!!!!!!! if it gets any worse I see either a move from Div I all together or maybe a move to like the AAC or Patriot Conferences, because at least they would be able to compete there. foul hooked Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Syracuse. We are loaded for the foreseeable future. Don't you miss the pre PC days when we were the Orangemen and the Johnies were the Redmen? I really miss Lou and his funky sweaters. Chris Mullen, Walter Barry, Bill Wennington and Mark Jackson. You had some great players. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 12, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 12, 2009 Our Season used to start with The Joe Lapcheck ( Catholic Colleges) Tourny! The BIG EAST HAD IN IT"S COACHING RANKS>>> Thompson,Boheim,Pitino,Valvano,Massimo,Carnasecca and Calhoun Syracuse / st Johns or St.Johns/Georgetown at the Garden was bigger than some of the Knick Games. You are lucky to still have Bohiem at the helm. Quote
1inStripes Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 I remember seeing some of those games on TV. Carnasecca vs Boehiem just seems classic to me. Quote
Super User Marty Posted January 13, 2009 Super User Posted January 13, 2009 The BIG EAST HAD IN IT"S COACHING RANKS>>> Thompson,Boheim,Pitino,Valvano,Massimo,Carnasecca and Calhoun I don't believe "V" coached here. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 13, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 13, 2009 Marty I have to check that, I believe he was not a head coach, but he may have worked the Big East beofre going over to ACC I may be wrong, I got this from my cousin Sal, he knows the bIg East like no other, but I may have it wrong. Super User Gone_Phishin Posted January 13, 2009 Super User Posted January 13, 2009 Marquette could always use another fan. On a related note, I can finally watch their games again now that Crean the Super ****** fled town in the middle of the night. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 13, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 13, 2009 Hey Marty: What year did CCNY win the NCAA Tourny? I have googled for a list and can't find any Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted January 13, 2009 Super User Posted January 13, 2009 The City College of New York won in 1950 Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 13, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 13, 2009 Thanks Hook, Where did you get that from? I know the PAc 10, Sec and Acc all had their dominant times I am trying to see how well , historically the Big East matches up in both final 4 and championships. I really see them getting their shot at dominating the brackets for a run, real soon! Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted January 13, 2009 Super User Posted January 13, 2009 Where else? ;D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950_NCAA_Men%27s_Division_I_Basketball_Tournament Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted January 13, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted January 13, 2009 Hey Muddy, why not jump ship to the NBA and root for the Oklahoma Thunder? ;D ;D Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 13, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 13, 2009 Is that the team that got evicted from Seattle? Quote
Super User Marty Posted January 14, 2009 Super User Posted January 14, 2009 Hey Marty: What year did CCNY win the NCAA Tourny? I have googled for a list and can't find any 1950. They also won the NIT that year and, as far as I know, the only team ever to win both in the same year. In those days the NIT was a big deal. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 14, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 14, 2009 Hey Marty. I looked high and low and you are right Valvano never worked for a Big East Program, I retract that I was running on wrong info for a long time with that one You are very right about how important the NIT was, I think UCLA's 10 year run in the NCAA may have played a role in that, it seems almost like an exhibition , rather than a tournament any more. Is the Joe Lapcheck Tourney even played anymore? Quote
foul hooked Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Hate-fest on ESPN tonight. Orange vs. Hoyas. Can't wait for tip-off Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 14, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 14, 2009 I got my by the microwave and new batteries in the remote. and I have to be in work for 3am, gonna be draggin my butt~ Quote
Super User Marty Posted January 16, 2009 Super User Posted January 16, 2009 Is the Joe Lapcheck Tourney even played anymore? I wasn't familiar with it, but a brief search indicates it's a thing of the past. Quote
tallydude Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Well, if you're adamant about a Big East team, go with UCONN. They are competitive every year, and Calhoun always has them in the title hunt. Syracuse misses the tourney too often, and Louisville is filled with thugs. The Bible says it's a sin to root for Georgetown, and none of the other Big East teams are worth mentioning. Congrats, Muddy. You're now a Husky. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted January 19, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 19, 2009 NEVER IN A THOUSAND YEAR!! The 2 teams I will never ever root for are U Con and the NY Yankees, i find them both somewhat repulsive. If I do switch it will either be Georgetown or Louisville Quote
foul hooked Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Have faith Muddster, the Johnies will return. They just need to hurry up and do it. Quote
tallydude Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 NEVER IN A THOUSAND YEAR!! The 2 teams I will never ever root for are U Con and the NY Yankees, i find them both somewhat repulsive. If I do switch it will either be Georgetown or Louisville Well, you should have told me that to begin with. I can't really recommend either of them for you unfortunately. The hate burns too deeply. I would tell you to pick Georgetown on the basis that it is a better school than Louisville, but Louisville has a better tradition and better fan base. On the other hand, I can't tell you to choose Louisville either. I would be subjecting you to painful reminders of why Louisville is a significantly inferior school to mine and be forced to forever look down upon you, because I have never understood why someone would actually support that school. My suggestion: choose a new conference entirely. There are plenty of fine basketball teams out there for you to support; I just can't think of any in the Big East aside from UCONN. Quote
