Super User Hookemdown. Posted December 17, 2008 Super User Posted December 17, 2008 Most of the material you read in English class gives you a better idea of what things were really like back then. The biographies are very enlightening. Their firsthand accounts are 100 times better than any textbook. Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted December 17, 2008 Super User Posted December 17, 2008 Another book I suggest is Mein Kampf (My Struggle). It's very disturbing though... Quote
atx_newbie Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 I would definitely agree that school's won't teach you nearly what you need to know, nor will they teach the subjects properly. The disparities between the way the Civil War is taught in northern schools vs. southern schools is a prime example. Not going to elaborate on that, as it would hijack the thread and probably start some arguments. Anyway, read as much as you can from both sides of any issue. Then you can decide your opinion. And that's the beauty of history: on most subjects, you can't be wrong as long as you make your point well. Back to Hitler though: I saw a History Channel special where they found a lot of his old home movies, which at the time could only be made without sound. They used a lip-reading computer and clips of him speaking to dub in his own words in his own voice into the videos. It was eerie how normal he was when hanging out with his friends and family. Quote
Fish Man Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 i can honestly say that most of what i know about WWII and other wars has come from video games. it was something that interested me as a kid and it got me to read books and watch shows about it. Quote
IDbasser Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I read this last night. What are they thinking? They knew very well when they named their kids those names that it would cause a lot of controversy over the years. They should not act surprised, they got the attention they have been expecting. > Quote

There are quite a few things I have learned from watching the history shows. Quote
IDbasser Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Whats screwed up is the fact that this made news. Any business has the right to decline service to anyone at any time, with no explanation. This is America. Did anyone notice that WALMART actually filled there request. I can't believe Wal Mart or any one else would make that cake. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 I had the oppurtunity to work on a railway project here in New Jersey. Many of the technicians and engineers were from Germany. Great bunch of guys, I learned alot from them. They told me in Germany, ANY references to Nazis, swasticas, Heil Hitler salutes, etc is dealt with swiftly and harshly. It is not tolerated at all. While wer'e talking about Germany, did you know in order to get a fishing license there you must pass a written test ? Quote
Super User firefightn15 Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 Rootbeer, this IS a free country but how can you rationalize doing this to a child? Have the parents hang these labels around their own neck and see where it gets them. The children are pretty defenseless, but on the other hand if mom and dad want to change their own names and see where that gets them.....JMO Quote
Super User Sam Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 Do you guys realize that Adolph Hitler's relatives are living in the USA today? They have changed their names and will not admit they are direct descendants. If you watch either Biography or The History Channel you learn these things. If I had The History Channel when I was in high school or college I would have scored A's all the time. And yes, we had TVs when I was in high school and college. Even in color!!!! So anyone naming their child after Adolph Hitler is dumb. Really dumb. And they are NOT a member of the Hitler family. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 its is dumb but it is also a free country would this be on the news if they named there children malcolm x cambell or osama bin campell or sadam hussain cambell i highly doubt it Quote
Super User Muddy Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 That doen't even warrant a reply, there goes this thread!!!!!!!!! Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted December 18, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted December 18, 2008 I consider myself a WWII buff. I learned most of it on my own when I was in high school. I checked out a book on the battle of the Bismark and was addicted. I read it all the way through in one sitting. I couldn't read enough after that. The History Channel didn't exist back then (cable TV was very new, and a novelty). But I could catch the "World at War" and "Victory at Sea" series on a local channel. I learned a TON! I suggest to anyone, to learn as much as possible about past conflicts, including the politics prior to the outbreak of war. You can really learn a lot and then apply it to current events. There's striking resemblences. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 Don't beat me up on this but I think that kid looks like Damien, from the movie. Quote

simplejoe Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Why would you wanna do that to your own flesh and blood, I mean their your kids WHY. I would never want my kids to go through life being embarrassed of their names or where they come from. Those names are going to have a long-term effect on those kids. IDIOTS or should I say CRACKHEADS ( sorry mods I had to use that term) My Grandpap told me stories about WWII he didn't want to but did and I never saw him tear up before until he told me his story about the war. A BRAVE BUNCH OF GUYS I always watch the History Channel. MY wife hates it. Quote

I would never want my kids to go through life being embarrassed of their names or where they come from. Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same about their children as you do or might about yours. Simply having children does not automatically mean that you will love them or respect them. For some people, it is the opposite. Children become pawns in their parent's twisted and perverted lives. Sad, but true. Quote

Bass Dude Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 It dismays me how the younger members here do not know history... Just a question where are you guys drawing your information from? public school. they just cram information into you to get you ready for tests. they don't teach you much. only stuff the school board says we need to know. public school education isnt much about the students benefiting, its about getting them to do well on tests so the school looks good. no child left behind sucks. My father is a retired public school teacher and I have heard everything wrong about schools and teachers, from the students!!!! I know this because they would gripe to me about how hard his class was and how much he expected from them. Anyway---If you didn't learn about how dispicable the Holocost was, then something is wrong. I doubt that any school or teacher would glance over the horrors of that this man and his ideals caused. I suggest to anyone, to learn as much as possible about past conflicts, including the politics prior to the outbreak of war. You can really learn a lot and then apply it to current events. There's striking resemblences. I had the benefit of a grandfather who faught in Pattons army. His unit was actually the spearhead of the battle to liberate our guys in Bastogne. His brother landed at Normandy they both fought till VE day. Before he passed away I heard countless stories from him. He saw some amazing stuff. Amazing and scary. At the end of the war the US commanders commanded as many troops as possible go through the concentration camps and see the horror to make sure nobody would ever be able to say it never happened. These folks really do not get it. If they are willing to name their children after nazis without any care for how their children will be treated in life for it. You have to wonder, what would they do in the privacy of their own home. Hopefully, DSS takes a long hard look at the home life these children have and, if it is abusive, never allows them back in that home. Quote
