Super User roadwarrior Posted January 8, 2009 Super User Posted January 8, 2009 If Oklahoma wins, only Texans have a gripe, but if Florida wins that puts USC, Utah and Texas into play. Do you think tonight's winner is the "Undisputed National Champion"? 8-)
Super User Catt Posted January 8, 2009 Super User Posted January 8, 2009 A Florida win would be undisputed since they are #1 in the AP with 50 votes to Oklahoma's 9 votes and Texas's 6 votes.
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 8, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 8, 2009 Gotcha! That makes perfect sense. 8-)
CFFF 1.5 Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 No, it shouldn't matter who wins this game, Utah should be the National Champion. They beat 4 ranked teams and beat Alabama in their bowl game. Oh Yeah they went undefeated.
bocabasser Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 No, it shouldn't matter who wins this game, Utah should be the National Champion. They beat 4 ranked teams and beat Alabama in their bowl game. Oh Yeah they went undefeated. x2 all the more reason the ncaa should have playoffs. i hope the gators get crushed! why doesn't espn have their own series of games. every university would benefit financially, and then we would have a TRUE national champion.
Daniel A. Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Until the BCS system is radically revamped, there will not be an undisputed national champion in college football.
Super User Catt Posted January 8, 2009 Super User Posted January 8, 2009 USC has no dog in the hunt since they lost to an unranked Oregon State which is why they have on AP votes. I'm 100% behind a playoff
mattm Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Florida lost to Ole Miss who I believe was unranked at the time. There will not be an undisputed champion this year. To many teams have a legitimate gripe. Probably none bigger than Utah.
Super User fishinfiend Posted January 8, 2009 Super User Posted January 8, 2009 I cannot wait to watch this game. I think I will pick up some bratwurst and some New Castle 8-)
Super User Catt Posted January 8, 2009 Super User Posted January 8, 2009 Yes Ole Miss was unranked at the time they played Florida but they improved to 25th while Oregon State was never ranked and never improved. No other team outside of Utah has a legitimate gripe not even Texas especially after the way they played Ohio State which proved they have on defense.
key chain bass guy Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 They're still playing college football?
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 8, 2009 Author Super User Posted January 8, 2009 They're still playing college football? How long ya been snowed in? Tunnel over to a neighbor's house and watch the BCS Championship this evening. Bring your own whiskey! 8-)
Daniel A. Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Maybe someone can help me understand something... I believe a team's strength of schedule should not be determined until after the season has completed(excluding the bowl games). For example, last year LSU beat four teams ranked in the top ten at the time they played. However, at the end of the season, the teams were not ranked as highly. Part of LSU's argument for their BCS Championship invite was they defeated four top ten teams. I think they beat four teams that others thought too highly of at the time. That argument should not have carried as much weight as it did. Why do teams argue their strength of schedule based on incomplete information? A team's ranking isn't determined until the regular season is completed, so how can a team claim it defeated ranked teams who may or may not be ranked at the end of the season? Catt/Sam, I'm an LSU fan. I just believe their schedule wasn't as strong as some supporters claimed.
key chain bass guy Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 My interest has waned. I have no dog in this fight, so to me college football ends on New Year's Day. With no playoffs for the Pats and the NBA in its doldrums, for me it is now a countdown to pitchers and catchers reporting.
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted January 8, 2009 Super User Posted January 8, 2009 In my opinion, the champs already won their game............UTAH!!! Falcon
SuskyDude Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 A "Champion" in college ball? WHAT DID THE COMPUTER SAY? ;D
Daniel My Brother Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I'm rooting for Oklahoma, but I'd put money on Florida. It's unfortunate that teams like Utah are eliminated from contending for a championship before the first game is even played. What a stupid system.
TheBeast Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Why do teams argue their strength of schedule based on incomplete information? A team's ranking isn't determined until the regular season is completed, so how can a team claim it defeated ranked teams who may or may not be ranked at the end of the season? If that happened USC would never have played anyone ranked and would be out on poor schedule strength every year.
Super User Sam Posted January 8, 2009 Super User Posted January 8, 2009 Yes, RW, tonight's winner is the BCS champs. Texas did not do that well overall. USC has the talent but has not been able to put it together and the PAC-10 has been given very little respect by the pollsters. Utah may be a second or third, but the Utes do not play an SEC or Big 12 conference schedule. As I see it, the top five would be: Winner of BCS Utah USC Loser of BCS Texas JMHO.

Super User Dan: Posted January 8, 2009 Super User Posted January 8, 2009 Utah may be a second or third, but the Utes do not play an SEC or Big 12 conference schedule. We will see by tonight if the Big 12 was really as difficult as everyone thought it was.
Brute Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Our daughter graduated from Florida 2 years ago so naturally I will be rooting for the Gators all the way. If the game starts to go south, I will have to listen to my wife like a sailor. She is usually not like that, but something about Gator football gets her blood flowing. Brute
Super User Dan: Posted January 9, 2009 Super User Posted January 9, 2009 Anyone see #5 on Oklahoma pulling on Harvin's leg after that tackle? He has got to be the dirtiest college player I have ever seen. The guy is a thug. I watched him talk crap and hit late (and generally act like a thug) against Texas Tech when they were up a few scores and he's playing dirty again in this game. What a d
Super User Matt Fly Posted January 9, 2009 Super User Posted January 9, 2009 Texas lost their right when they slipped in Lubbock. But Texas does have a gripe. Based on the same kinda schedule LSU laid claim to a title with two losses. Texas played Rice, who won at least 9 games and won its Bowl game. Texas Played Florida Atlantic who won 8 games at least and its Bowl game. Texas Played the great SEC, known for defense and hung 50 on Arkansas. Texas Played UTEP who was 5-7, who had played 8 teams on their schedule who went Bowling this year. Not one college can boast they played 4 top ten teams in a row, plus Kansas was ranked to make 5 ranked teams in a row. Texas held the Sooners offense to 35, well below their record setting year. We beat the north and south champs in the big XII. The Ohio State game isn't pretty, but we did what champs do in the final drive. We won. Texas beat OU head to head. 12-1 Texas and Mack Brown had second stringers in every game in hand, they didn't run up the style points. Classy move. Fisher of men always put Texas down, but I wonder if he respects us for not running the score up on the Aggies for style points. Hookem and Go Big XII Go Big XII
