Anyone else think this movie was complete tripe?

Why can't hollywood do even the least bit of research?!  In the movie there is a huge "sphere" sitting in New York's Central Park.  The authorities decide to attack it with Sidewinder missiles.  Doesn't hollywood have any military advisors who might point out that sidewinders are air-to-air missiles that pack only a very small punch and would be totally inappropriate for such a target?  It's almost as stupid as when hollywood depicts an "experienced" fisherman holding a spinning outfit with the reel on top of instead of below the rod.

Was I the only one who wanted to see the brat...er, I mean "child" get vaporized?

  It is based on a classic 1950's movie by the same name. IT"S SCIENCE FICTION, it is not supposed to be real. It's not like a Patton Bio pick, You know flying saucers, little green guys and missiles going the wrong way.

The original movie was from a crop of films that came out as a response to the fear of nuclear fall out and impending doom.

Why not write Warner Brothers, I just saw Bugs in a Caddy with the wheel on the steering wheel dead center on the console

darn, looked like an interesting movie.  Too bad.  I think it's the little details that really counts, you can make up as much crap as you want with the sci-fi cause essentailly, it's just that, sci-fi, but get the REAL details right like the sidewinder missiles.

I must insist that even science fiction must have a firm grounding in reality and/or historical accuracy if it's going to believeable and/or enjoyable-particularly if it's setting is modern-day United States. What Hollywood does with movies like (the modern vesion of) "...earth stood still" is insult the viewers intelligence. There are no cheap shortcuts unless one is striving for b-movie ratings.

you can insist all you want, fantasy is created by the person who has the fantasy, not by the audience . IT IS A REMAKE OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS B MOVIES OF THE 50"s. what were you expecting a Fellini movie?

Now if in Saving Private Ryan ( War-BIOPIC) the genre begs for accuracy.So would a film like Gone with the Wind, this why they have continuity experts

If you are seeking reality, a remake of a Cheesy B movie from the 50's is not where to find it

I read a review on it this weekend and they absolutely panned it.  Not because of its inaccuracies (if there is such a thing in Sci-Fi), but because of the horrible acting and writing.

They didn't say anything about the special effects, so I'm going to assume those were "really cool"..  ;D

The most asinine sci-fi movie I have ever seen was Kronos.  The villan was a huge metalic box with a dome on top.  It had five or six "legs" that looked like giant cylinders.  These "legs" could only go straight up or straight down, yet that machine traveled all over the place. The Godzilla movies also ranked right up there.  B movies were always pretty much a load of crap, but, as a kid, I thoroughly enjoyed them.

The most asinine sci fi I ever saw was ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES, it was designed to be that way

My favorite satire of these films was MARS ATTACKS, hysterical: Country and Western Music makes the Martians Brains explode to save the world ;D Every big name in Hollywood was in it and they had fun and so did the audience. 8-)

Actually, the inaccuracies were just the tip of the ice berg.  I mentioned the sidewinder missiles only because I know a little (more than some, less than others) about military weaponry and it just bugged me.  The story-line was weak and the acting even worse.   I really don't know how Keanu Reeves can attract casting directors.

Nearly every movie these days has a smart-mouthed, disrespectful child in it and this one was no exception.  Somehow, hollywood thinks that's appealing to viewers.  I find it just the opposite.
