Olebiker Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 A friend gave me a set of DVDs of the first season of The Wire. If you have ever seen the show you know that about every fifth word out of just about every character's mouth is the F-bomb. I have to wonder if I have just lived in a sheltered environment all my life but, except for posts from young California guys on a bicycle related website, I seldom hear people using that word. Quote
bigbaitfisher Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 I live about 20 minutes outside of Baltimore, where the show is filmed, and know a guy who's house is very often used in the filming. Yes, people actually, sadly, talk like that...and in public too. In fact, some of what you see on The Wire is "mundane" and can be heard in the Baltimore County Public School Systems without anyone flinching. Quote
slomoe Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 My favorite show of all time. 8-) My father was in the Navy for 11 years before I was born, I'm used to that word ;D Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 People use the "F-Bomb" every fifth word because of they don't have a firm grasp of our language. It's also a result of the deterioration of family and moral values in the country. I'll admit that I use the word, but only when I'm really freakin' ticked off 8-) Quote
simplejoe Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Sad, but true. That show isn't far off from the reality of what's going on in the world today. I do some traveling for my job and staying in some of these cities for a couple days and let me tell you I can't wait to get home. Over in Philly someone tried to steal my tires off of my van when it sitting outside 20' away, I mean I could see it sitting there though glass doors. WHACKO Quote
atx_newbie Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Yeah, some of the vocabulary in that show is pretty standard for the younger crowd. I personally blame that, as well as a lot of other deteriorating moral issues, on rap music. But all that aside, The Wire is the best tv show (even including the disappointing final season). ever. Nothing else comes close. Quote
Pitchinkid Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Now i had heard that word at least 10 times a day from my old man. He worked in profanity the way other artist might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium, a master. - Ralphie, christmas story Quote
Olebiker Posted December 15, 2008 Author Posted December 15, 2008 I never heard my father utter even a mild profanity until he took up fishing. I was about 17 and Dad and I were bass fishing on Rough River Reservoir in Kentucky. He hooked what felt like the mother of all bass. When it came in sight I told him it was a carp. He blurted out, "Is that what that SOB is?" ;D Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted December 15, 2008 Super User Posted December 15, 2008 I work at a school and I could not count how many times I hear that word used on a daily basis. A lot of these kid's don't even realize they are cursing since they do it so much. It reminds me of this quote: "Profanity is the attempt of a lazy and feeble mind to express itself forcefully." Super User .ghoti. Posted December 15, 2008 Super User Posted December 15, 2008 What do you mean, do they talk like that? Around here, they put it on their tee shirts and wear it. Quote
Bassboss Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Same thing at school! F this F that! It's especially bad with 6'th graders! They seem to be new to all these word, and they use with such great abundance, it would not be so bad if they could use the word properly. It seems to they say these words just to say it and act "cool." Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 15, 2008 Super User Posted December 15, 2008 Just go into a college classroom. Same thing, but from the teachers and in discussions. Especially in classes where things can get heated like a Poli-Sci, American Government, or Ethics. Some good times though. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted December 16, 2008 Super User Posted December 16, 2008 Never watched Deadwood, have ya? ;D Quote
