Hey IE6 users!

28% of IE users still use IE6,  even though IE7 has been out for a long time now.

It's time to upgrade!  Go to http://www.microsoft.com/ie to upgrade now!

I realize some of you are on corporate or school computers, and can't upgrade yourself.  But the rest of you don't have any excuses!

Glenn, i'm on IE7 and at the bottom of the page when reading posts with multiple pages, you can only see the page you are on. The link is there for the other pages but is invincible.

Please - let's not start yet another bug thread here.  I realize there are a few temporary issues right now, even for IE7 users. Please be patient and sit tight.  They will be fixed soon.

Again, please upgrade to IE7 or the latest version of Firefox.  Just trust me on this.  Life will be better if you do.  I am fixing the bugs for the latest browsers first, so it's in your best interest to upgrade now.

Gonna follow Glenn's lead, but see that there is a download for IE8.  Wondering if I should go with 8 or stay with downloading IE7  :-/

Hookemdown, you gave me info on firefox and I downloaded it.  Played with it, but can't get used to it.  When I get more time this winter I am gonna go back to it and learn it.  Couple more weeks and I am gonna have plenty of time!

You got that right Glenn, I changed to Firefox at home a few years ago and never looked back !!! Also, when I had 6 and then 7 I got away from the automatic downloads MS sent you to download. I went in to Microsoft and picked what I wanted and left everything else go. What is your opinion on picking your own upgrades and patches?

I always download the "critical" updates because those are usually security patches.  The rest, not so much.

Unfortunately you need at least Win XP for IE7 to work... doesn't help us Win 98 (or Win 95) guys.

Try google chrome guys, it may not be for you, aesthetically, as it moves away from conventional ui, it's quite minimalist and in my opinion more intuitive but that's subjective

but it's quite revolutionary in terms of programming.

Each tab runs in its own private environment which creates a new process everytime a new tab or new page is opened in Google Chrome.  So if one page(tab) crashes, you dont have to turn off the entire application, just that one page (tab)

The jury's still out on Chrome.  Personally, I think it has a long ways to go before it can compete with other browsers. But that's just me.

Regardless of what you use, it's important to note that it won't be long before I will no longer support IE6.  Sorry if that's a surprise to you.  

Understand when I started this site, Netscape ruled the day and IE3 was an up-and-coming challenger.  Times have changed since then, and the site has rolled with those changes as it still does today.

You'd be hard-pressed to find any site that still supports IE 4 or 5, these days, let alone IE3.  And so, too, IE6 support is fading away.

The time to upgrade is now.  And if you're still running 10-year-old software .... WOW!

Ok I down loaded IE7 and now I can't get Outlook to show up on my tool bar, so I will be needing some help. Lets hear it. I just went back and looked and a hole lot of I cons are missing from my tool bar. :

Yeah, you all have finally beaten me. Time to upgrade, although the Dell rep was flabbergasted when I asked to have a 3.5 floppy added to the computer. And it's crazy, but they charge you $99 to downgrade from Vista (the scourge of business) to XP... go figure!

(and 10 years how about 20 I still use a DOS based program and DOS only computers to do almost $2 million in company sales it's fun turning laptops back into DOS machines).

Stop Software Mistreatment!

People for the Ethical Treatment of Software (PETS) announced today that more software companies have been added to the groups "watch list" of companies that regularly practice software testing.

"There is no need for software to be mistreated in this way so that companies like these can market new products," said Ken Grandola, a spokesman for PETS. "Alternative methods of testing these products are available."

According to PETS, these companies force software to undergo lengthy and arduous test - often without rest - for hours or days at a time.

Employees are assigned to "break" the software by any means necessary and inside sources report that they often joke about "torturing" the software.

"It's no joke," Grandola said. "Innocent programs, from the day they are compiled, are cooped up in tiny rooms and 'crashed' for hours on end.

They spend their whole lives on dirty, ill-maintained computers, and they are unceremoniously deleted when they're not needed anymore."

Grandola said that the software is kept in unsanitary conditions and is infested with bugs.

"We know alternatives to this horror exist," he said, citing industry giant Microsoft Corp. as a company that has become successful without resorting to software testing.

Zel, the PETS article was a hoot ;D  The other day I questioned whether or not to upgrade to IE 8 and Glenn hollered not to do it because it was beta.  I upgraded to IE7, but was wondering what beta would mean to me as a user.  Anyone know?

Yeah Muddy, things have calmed down and I'm back and might even be able to fish next spring... and I have to upgrade my computer.

I'm currently running the latest version of GirlFriend and I've been having some problems lately. I've been running the same version of DrinkingBuddies 1.0 forever as my primary application, and all the GirlFriend releases I've tried have always conflicted with it. I hear that DrinkingBuddies won't crash if GirlFriend is run in background mode and the sound is turned oft. But I'm embarrassed to say I can't find the switch to turn the sound oft. I just run them separately, and it works okay. Girlfriend also seems to have a problem coexisting with my Fishing program, often trying to abort Fishing with some sort of timing incompatibility.

I probably should have stayed with GirlFriend 1.0, but I thought I might see better performance from GirlFriend 2.0. After months of conflicts and other problems, I consulted a friend who has had experience with GirlFriend 2.0. He said I probably didn't have enough cache to run GirlFriend 2.0, and eventually it would require a Token Ring to run properly. He was right - as soon as I purged my cache, it uninstalled itself.

Shortly after that, I installed GirlFriend 3.0 beta. All the bugs were supposed to be gone, but the first time I used it, it gave me a virus anyway. I had to clean out my whole system and shut down for a while.

I very cautiously upgraded to GirlFriend 4.0. It worked okay for a while until I discovered that GirlFriend 1.0 was still in my system. I tried running GirlFriend 1.0 again with GirlFriend 4.0 still installed, but GirlFriend 4.0 has a feature I didn't know about. It automatically senses the presence of any other version of GirlFriend and communicates with it in some way, which results in the immediate removal of both versions.

The version I have now works pretty well, but there are still some problems. Like all versions of GirlFriend, it is written in some obscure language I can't understand much less reprogram. Frankly I think there is too much attention paid to the look and feel rather than the desired functionality. Also, to get the best connections with your hardware, you usually have to use gold-plated contacts. And I've never liked how GirlFriend is totally "object oriented"

A year ago, a friend of mine upgraded his version of GirlFriend to GirlFriendPlus 1.0, which is a Terminate and Stay Resident version of GirlFriend. He discovered that GirlFriendplus 1.0 expires within a year if you don't upgrade to Fianc ée 1.0. So he did, but soon after that, he had to upgrade to Wife 1.0, which he describes as a huge resource hog. It has taken up all his space, so he can't load anything else. One of the primary reasons he decided to go with Wife 1.0 was because it came bundled with FamilyAddonPlus.

On top of that, Wife 1.0 must be running on a well warmed-up system before he can do anything. Although he did not ask for it, Wife 1.0 came with MotherlnLaw, which has an automatic pop-up feature, he can't turn off.

I told him to try installing Mistress 1.0, but he said he heard if you try to run it without first uninstalling Wife 1.0, Wife 1.0 will delete MSMoney files before doing the uninstall itself. Then Mistress 1.0 won't install anyway because of insufficient resources.

( don't worry Muddy just some humor, I'm still married to a wonderful woman the one who causes me to refer to computers as SHE 1). No one but the creator understands their logic. 2). The native language they use to talk to other computers is incomprehensible to anyone else. 3). Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for later retrieval. )
