Super User Hookemdown. Posted December 2, 2008 Super User Posted December 2, 2008 I'm just curious: What is the average distance rifle shot you take on a whitetail deer? My shots are usually between between 50 and 150 yards, but I've taken them as close as 15 yards and as far away as 200 yards. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted December 2, 2008 Super User Posted December 2, 2008 Just about the same for me. Quote
IDbasser Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Here in Idaho we mostly hunt mule deer. Average rifle shot is 200 yds. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted December 2, 2008 Super User Posted December 2, 2008 Of the 130+ deer that I've taken here in Georgia my average shot is a little less than 30 yards. I used to hunt with a 44Mag pistol. My average shot was less than 15yards during those years. The closest shot that I've taken was 5 yards and I've done that about 6 times. The biggest buck that I've taken was at 10 yards and I was still-hunting. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted December 2, 2008 Super User Posted December 2, 2008 On elk and muleys, probably 200 average. Have taken a deer at 75, and an elk at 320. Quote

Super User Catt Posted December 2, 2008 Super User Posted December 2, 2008 Most of my deer hunting is divided between West Texas & Louisiana West Texas shots range from 100 out to 250 yards Louisiana most shots are less than 100 yards; many deer were killed with shotguns Quote
Fisher of Men Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Last week: 250 yds. 60 yds. 90 yds. 90 yds. 130 yds. 200 yds. Those were just the shots he was taking. The deer got confused and ran toward him, changed his mind and was taken down with a shot in the butt as he ran away again. ;D Burley, you should go to the range more and you MIGHT be able to properly take a deer. : He's right, though. How many are legally allowed there, Burley? Quote
Pitchinkid Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 prob around 200 its a good over and under number. Quote
justfishin Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 At my house on my property most of my shots have been 30 yards or less. On a farm I hunt near Antientm Battlefield most of my shots are between 100 yards, out to 225 yards. As I said in another link in here, I love my Model 70 .270, that 3x9x50 Pentax scope and those Hornady SST 130gr shells !!! Quote

My shots are usually between between 50 and 150 yards, but I've taken them as close as 15 yards and as far away as 200 yards. The vast majority of the deer I shoot are within the same rang you mention here. I have killed a few at around 200 yards, and one at 350 (shot her in the head too!). Quote
justfishin Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Why is it that at 52 a 200 yard shot looks a lot farther than it used to!!!,LOL. Quote
BucketmouthAngler13 Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 whitetails less than 100 yards Quote
frogtog Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 All the deer Iv'e killed have been at close range with my 270. Now I have poped some Groundhogs with the 270 useing a 100 gr way the heck out there. Did I mention that those Groundhogs are some good eating. Quote
clipper Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 My average shot is less than 50 yards. My longest kill is a little over 100 yds. I hunt in Georgia. By the way, we can take a total of 12 deer in georgia during the season. I couldn't afford to pay to have that many deer processed and I certainly wouldn't want to butcher that many myself. Two or three a year gives us all the venison we need. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted December 3, 2008 Super User Posted December 3, 2008 Dang! How many deer can you shoot where you live? (legally) :-? Five tags on this end of the state. Eastern end of the state gets an extra tag. We can buy as many antlerless tags as we want each year. If I had the desire and the money (on my end of the state), I could kill a doe a day from the first Saturday in October until the first Saturday in November. Then the same from the first Monday in December until the first Saturday in January. On the eastern end of the state (varies by county), the limit is two deer per day. I could easily kill 10 deer a week on our lease. Quote
IDbasser Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 WOW! I would be happy to be able to go out and get a second deer during the season. Only allowed one deer here. Quote
