alabamabassmaster Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 I have been told for years that buzzbait colors do not make a difference and that it's all about the blades and action it makes. I do believe the blades and action are real important however I do think the color is to. I believe the color is as important and the blade action. I was fishing on the lake I mentioned a few post back and I used the Black Buzzbait and caught one fish on it all evening. My buddies were fishing the same lake in the same area fishing the same structure I was fishing and they had about 10, 1 of which was 4.5 lbs. He was using a Chart. buzzbait where I was using a Black buzzbait. The water is mostly stained and varies in depth but where we were fishing was 3-5 ft. I have always heard, clear water use white, chart/white and shad colors and in stained or muddy/stained use dark colors. I think in stained or muddy water bright colors work best because they can see them better. I like Black and Browns in clear water because it helps them see better. Comments? Thoughts? Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 6, 2008 Super User Posted June 6, 2008 No two people retrieve their baits the exact same way No two baits move in the exact same way No two baits make the exact same noise Some times color does not matter but there are times when color makes all the difference These subtle differences can determine getting skunked or not and only the bass can tell which they prefer. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 6, 2008 Super User Posted June 6, 2008 The major problem you encountered is that the bass do not read magazines, books or watch TV so they do what they believe is natural to them and not what a pro or someone else suggests. So you were told to use a black skirt in the PM and a white skirt in the AM but no one told the fish!!!! ;D Catt is right. A different retrieve; different clatter from the blade; different size; with or without a trailer hook; different skirt and blade colors; heavy or light line test; where you throw them; and different techniques can all play into the equation. That is why some guys love a black skirt with a silver blade for 99% of their applications and why I like the Cavitrons with the bubbles and do not worry about the blade colors. You may want to experiment and change buzzbaits to find out what they want. Also, try to find Lee Bailey, Jr.'s Fishing Factors Buzzbait Secrets. It is a very good DVD and you will learn a lot about this presentation. Bass Challenge, LLC P.O. Box 177 Hebron, CT 06248 877.369.8687 www.leebaileyjr.com This is why bass fishing is so much fun. You are trying to outsmart an animal with a brain the size of a marble. And usually, the fish wins. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted June 6, 2008 Super User Posted June 6, 2008 The main thing I want from a buzzbait is the squeak. Other than that I fish black, white, and chartruse/white. The squeak is the most important thing to me. Quote

tyrius. Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 And also buzzbaits may vary between each one, even if they are the same manufacturer and the same type/weight/color. One may squeak more or less or a higher or lower pitch. The blade may have gotten bent a bit differently between two baits resulting in a different gurgle. Your buddy may have been retrieving his lure at a different speed or with a trailer or he may have been running his lure into the structure or a myriad of other things. Also, it could have been the color difference. Quote
Mottfia Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 I believe that if you have some visibity then color matters. No visibility means that I want a louder bait more than anything else. I'm not sure about the colors that work best in certain conditions. I normally try to fish my confidence bait colors before anything else. You know those colors... white, white/char., and black. If that doesn't work then I will try some off the wall color that I don't think a fish has seen before. I'm a firm believer that a fish will destroy a buzzbait even on a bad day. But in some conditions where there is alot of fishing pressure, you might find that the fish are shy to a certain color. Quote
alabamabassmaster Posted June 7, 2008 Author Posted June 7, 2008 I went back today and used my confidence buzzbait, the Booyah Buzz in White/Char. Shad and had strike after strike. While they were hitting I tried other colors such as black on black with one or two small strike. I went to the Cavitron in Ghost and had a few strikes but none of them performed like the Booyah Buzz. I was catching fish on the Buzzbait until around 10am, it was mid 90's and mostly sunny and they were still nailing the buzzbait. Quote
