Super User fourbizz Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 Have you ever considered directing all this energy that you exert on weird little hobbies and projects to something a little more rewarding? I recommend girls. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 Never raised nightcrawlers, but these served me well with my bigger fish: http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/management/See_CulturingRedworms.html Quote
Super User Tin Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 See how cranky and miserable Bizz is Dave? That is a reason to stay away from them... Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 It would be easier to just dig'um up in your mom's rose garden. Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 Dave, I once had an aluminum tub under the house, covered with a round sheet of plywood for my Nightcrawlers. I kept them in the crawlspace as they had a habit of getting out of the tub while in the house and I found them all over the place. Dead and stiff. It is a lot of work and expense. Plus the fact that your mom will go bonkers when they invade your parents' bedroom. You can buy two-dozen Nightcrawlers at Wal-Mart for under $3 and I suggest getting them there. Unless you can put them in a safe place where the wild animals can't get to them and they won't get loose and invade your house. ;D Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Yo Dave. My Dad was into this for awhile. He had a 4' square wooden box in the basement. Almost like a compost box. For some reason I remember him putting shredded up newspaper as well as all the table scraps in there. I can get more info if you want... Quote
Super User Muddy Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 I had that same problem of worms getting out, when i tired to raise them. I got a paper clip and made an M out of the end of it to brand them, for identity reasons. After branding they did not seem to move around too much after they stopped flopping about ;D Quote
SDoolittle Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I got a paper clip and made an M out of the end of it to brand them, for identity reasons. Thats a good idea! A local worm rancher recently came up short a dozen head of nightcrawlers at his annual worm roundup. He believes it to be the work of worm rustlers! Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 And you said the air quality in New Jersey messed up MY head ?! Quote
wisturkeyhunter Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I go out to the parks here in town and get them at night during the spring and summer. On a nice damp cool summer night I can catch 100 plus in a couple hours time. They hang half way out of there holes you just have to be fast and grab them and gently pull them out. Then get some worm bedding at any outdoors store or even maybe walmart and a worm box and follow the directions. I have a few hundred crawlers now but I don't use them for fishing much anymore. Quote
mattm Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 You have to have more free time than anyone. I'm convinced you could bring world peace in a couple of months if you would drop everything and pursue nothing else. Quote

Dont listen to these guys. Hey I dont see anything wrong with having a bunch of hobbies. Girls just get you into trouble and take up all your fishing time. As far as raising night crawlers goes, I cant help much. Just make sure whatever you decide to use to house your crawlers is out of direct sunlight. Also use a nutrient rich topsoil when setting up your night crawler habitat. Quote
