Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 My dryer is not getting hot. It comes on and turns/tumbles ok but no heat. Is there anything else that could cause it to lose heat besides the heating element? I was going to order one and replace it myself but want to make sure it's causing the problem. Thanks, Doug. Quote
moby bass Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Check the thermal fuses. Make sure you have continuity. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 It could be the relay that turns on the element, but my guess would be the element. If you don't know how to use a meter to check continuity find someone who does. Checking the element is a very simple matter. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 To check the element; Locate the element by removing the back of the dryer> turn dryer on>place tounge on to said element> if you smell something burning, it's not the element Quote
frogtog Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Also if the element is ok ,you might want to check you discharge vent. It can get stopped up and stop it from drying, I have seen them stop up with water if they are run to the outside of the house. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 13, 2008 Author Super User Posted November 13, 2008 Thanks for the help good buddies. I take the back off every 6 months and clean everything real good. I tried cleaning everything again after the wife said it wasn't working but the cleaning didn't help. And Muddy, I hope telemarkers call you all day for the next month. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 I'll give them your number ;D I have a small dryer and the element connects like a plug, it is round with 2 prongs. I guess from wheeling it in and out of the closet , one side was not making contact. I just had to push it in. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 Had the same problem once- it was the thermostat. Google "appliance repair"- there are sites out there that will show you step by step how to diagnose and repair it. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 Theres normally a thermal fuse attatched to the outside of the drum. Trace the wiring out from where the power enters the dryer. It will lead you to the thermal fuse, normally about the size of a quarter, with two posts, wired in series. Thermal fuse will go out if you have a clogged vent or somewhat restricted vent. Like mentioned, a volt meter can check both out, the heating element or the thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is about 10-15 bucks at a appliance repair shop. Replace it if you don't have a meter, if it works, your okay, if it don't, take it back and get the heating element. Always unplug the dryer when doing continuity/resistence check. Quote

Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 13, 2008 Author Super User Posted November 13, 2008 Thanks. I took the heating element off and one of the springs is broken. Would that be the problem? The springs are also burnt pretty bad. Quote

Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 13, 2008 Author Super User Posted November 13, 2008 I bought a new heating element from SEARS. $49. plus tax. I installed in 2 minutes and everything is working fine. I probably saved $80 doing it myself. And with the help of yall. Thank you everyone. Do you think I now qualify to take my baitcasters completely apart for cleaning? Quote
Super User Muddy Posted November 13, 2008 Super User Posted November 13, 2008 When you do, send me the extra parts Quote
