Infidel. Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 How is it that we can't talk politics on here but you guys can sell political ad space? Quote
Super User Muddy Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 Glenn owns the site, the last Ilooked. It is his propery and we must go by his rules or just go : Quote
mattm Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 That sir is hitting the nail on the head! Quote
Infidel. Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 Glenn owns the site, the last Ilooked. It is his propery and we must go by his rules or just go Yeah I know, I don't even want to get into it with that kind of stuff, it just gets ugly. That is one of my favorite things about this site, so why mess it up with these adds? Quote
Super User Muddy Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 Revenue, it costs to run this place. I think it is wierd though all those rules about time to both sides and all that, but Glenn is a savvy business man and as long as he does not nominate LBH for anything it's all good in the Hood Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 Hmm...I haven't actually seen a political add, but I'll take your word for it. Glenn may want to address this more specifically, but the general answer is that we have an arrangement with Google and don't directly control their advertising mix. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 The only banner I see is the one for "Vote yes on 8". I think most of the board members here will agree that it is more fundamental than political. Feel free to delete this post if I crossed the line. Quote
Infidel. Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 I see the same add that Robert is talking about which is a highly controversial prop that Californians are voting on. RW, thanks for the explination. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 This is what our California users get to see 9 times out of 10 for the last few days. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted November 3, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted November 3, 2008 RW is correct to an extent. Google is serving these political ads without "asking" me first. However, I can AND WILL shut them off immediately as soon as i know about them. The problem is, they are geotargeted. Meaning, people in California see something different that people in Texas, and people in NY see something entirely different. I don't see them. So I had no idea these are running. I've removed the ones I saw, but clearly there are more that I don't know about. Look at the ads and you'll see a URL in them somewhere. PM me the URLs and I will block them asap. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted November 3, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted November 3, 2008 Ok, I know about the Prop 8 ads and am working on filtering them out now. Any others, please let me know. BTW - the prop 8 ads are appearing in full force across the internet, unnanounced, taking over entire websites - and are pi$$ing off a TON of webmasters. Expect a huge backlash against Google for this! > Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted November 4, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted November 4, 2008 Should be gone now. Everyone - please let me know if you're seeing any other political ads. Thanks! Quote
frogtog Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Could you just leave Palin in the left upper corner please. ;D Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted November 4, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted November 4, 2008 There shouldn't be ANY political ads. Please PM me the URL that's on the ad please. Quote
Super User Catt Posted November 4, 2008 Super User Posted November 4, 2008 The problem is, they are geotargeted. Meaning, people in California see something different that people in Texas, and people in NY see something entirely different. And I thought it was because we couldn't communicate Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 4, 2008 Super User Posted November 4, 2008 What banners ? I don 't see nuthin ' ! actually I don 't see any kind of banners on my screen. Quote
atx_newbie Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 The geotargeting makes a lot of sense for advertisers, and also clears up a lot of confusion on my part. I kept seeing ads for a resort on Bob Sandlin thinking to myself "there is no way that enough people are interested in lake Bob Sandlin to make that worthwhile" Quote
