Question about handgun permit form

Hey fellas,

 Looking to buy my first handgun and I just have 2 simple questions about the permit form {needed to buy handguns and assault rifles in MN}. It says I need to fill out the entire form or it will be denied, however, there is a section asking for dealer information and I have not decided where I am actually going to purchase the gun from. What should I do about that? Secondly, once I have the permit is it only good for one purchase, or can I buy more handguns/assault rifles until it expires? That looks like a one time host purchase permit. I will have to look into it further. It looks likes you will have to decide who you want to buy the gun from before you can send it in. Start looking. Gun shopping is quite fun.

What is the definition of "assault weapons" in MN?

I am not sure exactly what defines it, but I know some guns on the list are "military style" guns such as, AR-15, AK-47, Famas, FN FAL, etc.

@Jax. Yeah, I have not decided what to get yet. I only have about $400-500 to spend so I can't get anything super nice, but hopefully something decent. It will be used mostly for target stuff and maybe to carry hiking sometimes.

Yea, it is a pretty dumb law here because first I need to go to the Police station and do the background check, and then when I go to buy the gun they do the same darn check! It is honestly just a waste of time and money.

Missouri must have changed the law. To buy a handgun, you used to have to go buy the gun then the dealer filled out paperwork (not the 4473) which you took to the county sheriff. the sherrif then took about three days to do a background check. Then, you went back and picked up the permit that you took back to the dealer and picked up your gun. You had to do this each time you bought a handgun.

Yeah they did awhile back.  I hated filling out those forms from the sherrif.

Reading that makes me happy I live in WI. We get a background check and thats all. But we cant carry a conceled weapon which is fine with me.

You guys have it rough.  Here is SC with my CWP, the dealer does not even have to call NICS for a background check. I  Fill out the form and walk out the door.

For $500 I would highly recommend a Glock

I got less for my motor then I first expected, so my price range has dropped down to $300-400 range now. I have been looking at a few such as the Taurus 24/7 Pro 9mm, Taurus PT92 9mm, Ruger P89, and EAA witness. I would like something that is full size, high capacity, and 9mm.

$300-$400 is still isn't a bad range you may have to look into the used market.

Used glocks, M&Ps, Xds can be found in that price range. M&Ps have been running rebates. Their site is having issues at the moment so I cannot see what the new rebate is. I'll check back later.

Buying a handgun for self defense is a very personal thing. In this matter preference makes a huge difference. Find one that feels good in your hand. Gun owners are very biased about brands and styles. Opinions in gun debates are always very heated due to the the nature of what they are. We buy guns knowing full well that at one point your life may depend on it. We then assume that since we trust our life to it that everyone else should also. If they don't agree then they are most definitely WRONG! That is the nature of gun/caliber debates. When discussing guns you will run into more bull headedness than anything else.

I personally like the M&P striker fired format. I preferred my M&P over the Glock and the XD. The ergonomics fit my hand much better. I like the 17 round mags. Plus is has a life time warranty from S&W. When I pull my pistol it naturally points straighter for me. I shoot more accurately with my M&P than anything else. It fits my hand that much better. The felt recoil is the softest of any gun I have shot (excluding my wife's Walther P.22) I have about 900 rounds through mine and have never had one problem. I live in Indiana. I love Indiana. I have a full size 9mm that hold 17+1. It isn't nickle plated and shiny but it goes bang every time I pull the trigger.

I would avoid the S&W Sigma. If anyone tells you that the M&P is just an upgraded/ newer sigma then just quietly walk away from them because they have no idea what they are talking about.

I have a Taurus 24/7 in .40 that has been good to me.  I have never had any issues since I bought it and would recommend one.  MY friend has a Taurus 92 9mm that I have shot quite a bit and it is also a really nice gun.  If you plan on carrying I would get the 24/7 but if you are just going to punch paper at the range  would go with the 92.
