bassdocktor Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Hey guys I just got to thinking its that time of year and thought I'd offer up a reminder to go get yours. I got inspired to post this after typing up my experience of recently helping with a local flu clinic. Couple things to consider 1. YOU WILL NOT GET THE FLU FROM THE SHOT. It's a misconception and if you get sick it is only a coincidence 2. They are not just for the old, everyone can benefit. 3. Even though you may be someone who doesn't get sick this will help prevent you from spreading the flu. 4. Probably most important every day you aren't sick means one more day on the water or one more day working to pay the bait monkey. These are just a few of the many reasons why you guys should go. Red Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 well i cant remember the last time i got the flu, or sick in anyway even, i guess i am lucky. i dont get the flu shot because of this, i figure they can give mine to someone who needs it, kids or older folks or whatever. Quote
bassdocktor Posted October 24, 2008 Author Posted October 24, 2008 Hey Red they have plenty of them this year. Last year there was a shortage but plenty this year. So...... everyone can get one. In case there was a shortage they do have a list of those that should receive a shot, like the elderly and those with certain physical conditions. Also you guys should consider the pneumonia vaccince. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 24, 2008 Super User Posted October 24, 2008 YOU WILL NOT GET THE FLU FROM THE SHOT. It's a misconception and if you get sick it is only a coincidence. Yelp a whole lot of coincidence going on! Also you guys should consider the pneumonia vaccine. Gotta make sure to keep the doctors & pharmaceutical industry can afford new bass boats Quote
BASS fisherman Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 If one does get a flu shot is that person guaranteed not to get the flu? Aren't there different strains of the flu virus? So getting a flu shot doesn't necessarily mean you won't get another different strain of the virus? Just a couple things I have always wondered. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted October 24, 2008 Super User Posted October 24, 2008 Who gets pneumonia?!?! I mean, really? I'm not paying to be vaccinated for something I have never had a problem with Quote
bassdocktor Posted October 24, 2008 Author Posted October 24, 2008 Well Catt thanks I do look forward to being able to buy a new boat when I graduate from pharmacy school in 2012. Well probably a few years later since I might wanna make some progress on my loans first. But seriously, the current flu vaccines contain no live virus. The stuff that is put in the vaccine are just pieces of the virus' protein coat that triggers the body to make the appropriate defenses for the future. When people get sick what is happening is they arleady have the bacteria or virus inside them and the body turns some of its attention to the appropriate response for the flu vaccine. Therefore, the immune system cannot have 100% of its resources fighting off what ever you are getting. Or, you were about to get sick and it was gonna happen one way or the other. Quote
bassdocktor Posted October 24, 2008 Author Posted October 24, 2008 BASS fisherman. Yes there are many strains but....the vaccine is for the one that is the most common for the current year. That's why there is a different one each year. So yes it is still possible to get the flu but it does help diminish the chances significantly. Quote

Doesn't everyone getting a vaccine fuel the mutation into new strains? Quote
Super User grimlin Posted October 24, 2008 Super User Posted October 24, 2008 You know what's funny...everybody in my family who got the flu shot got sick with the flu the following week. So i say No thanks! I've never gotten a flu shot and i've never gotten the flu(that i can ever remember). Quote
daviscw Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 I got my flu shot the fair this year! Last year I got it at the infirmary at school. So far I have been flu-free. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 24, 2008 Super User Posted October 24, 2008 I get the flu shot every year. It doesnt prevent you from getting the flu, it minimizes how sick you get. With all the crazy strains that happen every year, I make sure to get it early. Quote
Big Tom Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 I just got mine the other day. Nice heads up. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted October 24, 2008 Super User Posted October 24, 2008 Doc offered me one Tuesday. Thanks but no thanks. :-X Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted October 24, 2008 Super User Posted October 24, 2008 I see we have a lot of supermen on here. Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Doc offered me one Tuesday. Thanks but no thanks. :-X Same here, never had one and have only gotten the flu once. It took till my late 30's to catch me, haven't had it since either. I'm very rarely sick. I think everyone should bite their nails, makes for one stellar immune system (I thought my mother was going to punch the doctor when he threw that one out there, lol) Quote
moby bass Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Never get the shot and can't remember the last time I had the flu. Quote
slomoe Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 My job gives out flu shots and I used to get them every year until I noticed I was getting sick right after. Coincidence??? I'm skipping it this year. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 24, 2008 Super User Posted October 24, 2008 Taking a flu shot does not guarantee you will not get the flu and not taking the flu shot does not guarantee you will get the flu. Nothing against your chosen profession but I'm against putting unnatural chemicals in my body. Thank you have a nice day Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 My girlfriend got the flu shot a week or so ago and she had some type of reaction to the shot. Her arm started to swell up, got tingly, and lost some feeling in her arm. Then the next day she had a very bad stomach pains and had a half dollar size bruise around where she got the shot. Never wanted a flu shot and this makes me sure that I will never get one. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted October 24, 2008 Super User Posted October 24, 2008 Who gets pneumonia?!?! I mean, really? I'm not paying to be vaccinated for something I have never had a problem with HEy Young Mook, us older people, people with diabetese(me among them). people with COPD and asthama and people with compromised immune systems all are in danger of getting pnemoina, that is a sizeable portion of the population at risk. Nothing against your chosen profession but I'm against putting unnatural chemicals in my body. Thank you have a nice day Hey CATT: they are really not unnatural chemicals. They are cultivated ( in egg yolks) actual strains of flu viruses, then they are killed and thier protein is what is injected into our bodies. This starts off an immunological response against that protien as if it were an actual attack by a live virus. The body in a sense then is locked and loaded and the immunological response is there if the actual viurs does enter your system. I work with inner-city, poverty stricken kids, and I am constantly exposed . I can not tell you what a lifesaver as a diabetic these vaccines are. also; yes a strain can come into the population after that years vaccines are fromulated and yes some people did get sick when live virus was used, this is not the case anymore. Super User J Francho Posted October 24, 2008 Super User Posted October 24, 2008 Having Diabetes Type 1 puts me a great risk, should I contract the real nasty flu that makes its way around the world, mutating as it goes. I say great risk, meaning death, despite being a very fit, and otherwise healthy late 30's guy. I get mine every year. One caveat, despite never having the flu (I don't generally get sick), I go through a very short series of flu like symptoms after my shot, which includes a dry tickle in my throat, a sour throat, cough, runny nose, fever, and muscle soreness and fatigue. here's the weird part: each of these lasts only about ten minutes, and the whole ordeal is about 3 hours long. I am told its not uncommon, LOL. Quote

One in seven Americans either have Diabetes Type 2, or are on the cusp of it. By the year 2015, experts believe that number will be one in three. Children are being diagnosed in numbers that are growing exponentially by the year. Quote
Super User flechero Posted October 24, 2008 Super User Posted October 24, 2008 Fact: after the flu shot, your immune system is weakened for up to 2 weeks. Fact: lots of stuff going around during the time flu shots are given Consider those 2 things together and it's no wonder why so many people think they get the flu from the flu shot and in most of those cases, it's not even the flu! Wash your hands like it's going out of style and use common sense, avoid sick people and dense crowds for a little while if you can. To each his own... I had the [real] flu 1 time and after about 6 days of wanting to die, another week to regain my strength and almost 15 lbs of weight loss, I decided I'd get the shot from then on. Even if it only protects me from the prominent strain, my odds are better. but I'm against putting unnatural chemicals in my body. I'd love to see your diet. Unless you grow and raise it ALL it in a controlled environment, the flu shot is way more natural than so much of the stuff we eat. Quote
