leaving in the top of the 8th.

That made me sick.  I would do near anything to see the Sox play, let alone a playoff game.

A little piece of me died inside.

Yep, poor losers...suck it up Boston fans, you cannot win every game. We're still going to win the series, so don't get to excited you Tampa fans ;D

Phillies fans are the worse, they boo their own team. Three seasons ago: I went with some fellas from work to see them play St.Louis, I forgot who was pitching for the Phillies, but he went through the St Louis line up twice with ease.Puljos, struck out looking and flies out, his 3rd time up he singled on 2 strikes and the fans booed the h0me town starter. He only contained the best hitter in the NL to a single in 3 at bats>TRAADE THE BUM,,, Geezz!

The Sox fans were booing the struggling offense and lack of timely hitting. Look at the situation when they were booing. Runners left on in scoring position. Nobody in the heart of our order is doing squat(except Pedroia)Papi looks mortal and is missing pitches he normally hammers. Doesn't make Sox fans bad, they are just frustrated with the performance of our team right now. And I clearly remember in game 1 the announcers talking about all the Rays fans filing out early in the 7th during a 2 run game. This is also the team that led the A.L. East basically wire to wire and ONLY SOLD OUT 8 REGULAR SEASON GAMES. Careful throwing rocks in that glass house boys. 8 sellouts you don't even deserve a team in Tampa!!!!

Why shouldn't they" deserve a team" , typical big market fan statement. If all the smaller market teams, who can not afford the players the big market teams can, then the Major Leagues would become a 6 team league at best. THAT WOULD BE GOOD FOR A FAN BASE!

The big teams have to play some body and maybe , just maybe some sort of revenue sharing might be in order, bring some parity to the league. they could take a lesson form the NFL

Posted

Isn't a big market statement. Before the season even started I said to friends watch out for the Rays this year. They have always been young and fiesty, now they have tremendous athleticism, speed to go with the youth. Along with the reliable pitching they always needed. My statement about them not deserving a team was based on the fact all season long there attendance stunk. 11000+ fans here and there to see a first place team is pathetic. Big market/small market has nothing to do with it. We're not talking money available to spend on players. Teams have shown in the past you don't need money to win it all(Florida Marlins). But for a team to be in first place virtually all year and only have 8 sellouts IS PATHETIC!! The Rays deserve better from there fans!!Worst to first isn't that parody? Revenue sharing? Heard of Luxury tax?Rays recieve $20-30 MILLION annually form other teams. They choose to spend it on stadium renovations and not on the roster(owners choice)$20 million spent on stadium in off season. Check your facts revenue sharing exists.

The Rays fan base would be bigger but they die off quickly.

The fans in Boston have a right to boo with the cost of their tickets being so high.

Posted

thank you Bass-brat!With high ticket prices(highest in the majors) and over 550 consecutive regular season sellouts I think Boston fans have earned the right to express displeasure towards a poor team performance.

Not yet they don't I am a life long Mets fan, 1962 POLO GROUNDS PACKED, then it got crappy 1964 Shea Openmed >>PACKED, then they were literally giving away seats  !969, oh well , that really packed them in and except for 2 runs in the 70's Shea , while showing many tickets SOLD had very FEW IN ATTENDANCE, I knoN I was one of the few.

THE TEAM STUNK UP QUEENS and it was painful to watch at times. The Rays have come from 8, thats it EIGHT CONSECUTIVE LOOSING SEASONS, and while i beg to differ with you, but other than the ocassioanl fluke team BIG MONEY BUYS AND HOLDS BIG PLAYERS.

hile the wild card has not been the same team . since it's ***. Take a look at post season play ; it is littered with big money/market teams, there is a reason for that

 Check this out, I believe it was 4 years ago in the Sporting News;

That year the NY YANKEE CABLE CONTRACT, could pay for the top 3 pitchers ( salaries that year) for every team in their division. SEATTLE MARINERS CABLE CONTRACT couldnt even cover their own 5 man rotation. As long as this keeps up, TV mioney would rather cover a Mets /Braves   or a Yankees/Sox game than cover the Rays, even in the midst of a 12 game winning sterak, No TV, Very Little Coverage and small crowds plague teams like the Rays, those of us who live in the big markets never get this.

Posted

But alot of these small market teams are not doing anything with the revenue sharing! Owners are choosing to pocket the money(which under MLB rules they are allowed to do)instead of spend it on players. Rays budget is 30mil a season. Well that is without the 20-30 mil they get from revenue sharing. That is 2 top of line pitchers or a couple of marquee names. How quickly everyone forgets about the Red Sox 86 years of misery.

You should never boo your own team.  End of story.  In private, you can complain about the team's performance or the coach's decisions all you want, but in public a true fan should sit quietly in peace if he can't find anything positive to cheer about.

Baseball players are paid millions of dollars to play a kids game. Fans all around baseball pay way too much to attend games.Blame the players union for no salary cap, which would level the field. If I am at the game watching players take strike three with the bat on their shoulder or have to watch Manny roll around in the outfield like he's trying to put out a fire I can boo. Doesn't make me less of a fan. I still love the team and the players it is performance I am booing. Red Sox players have said in numerous interviews about this subject that if they play poorly they deserve to get booed. According to ATX then, there really isn't any true fans in baseball. What is a fan to do when you have Manny who takes three strikes down the middle from M.Rivera with the bat on his shoulder because he didn't get his day off like he was supposed and didn't want to pinch hit? Or if he doesn't play cause his knee hurts but can't remember which leg to limp on? Say "that's alright Manny you play when you want to" B.S. they are being payed millions,a little criticism doesn't make anyone less of a fan. That is the beauty of sports, being able to critique and second guess decisions.

If you're talking about high school or college, I agree. When you're talking about the pros, I disagree.

We buy tickets, jerseys, $8 beers, pay cable bills, and sit through 3 minute commercial breaks so that these guys can make millions.

We're not buying loyalty, because lord knows if the Yankees come along and offer a few more dollars, your favorite player will jump ship. In fact, we're not buying anything, we're renting a player's services for a determined period of time.

For that money we should expect the player's best effort, on and off the field. If he isn't giving 100%, or is acting like a jerk, he deserves to be booed off the field.

This is a list of every series since I have been born: Check out the amount of times a NY team alone has been it the seriies ( including the Dodgers(Bklyn),Mets, Giants(NY and Yankees0 Of the last 10 thats 20 teams, by my count 14 of the participants had salaries over 100 million. Look how many times the Braves,Dodgers,Red Sox and Yankees have been in: You think the ability to buy and hold quality players has anything to do with CONTINUED POST SEASON apperances, not just one and done Cinderella years?

In some of the Series of the 70's even the WS had empty seats, as a result of Strike backlash.

Money in baseball IS NOT ON A REVENUE SHARING BASIS, why do you think a former owner is still commishiner?

From 51 to 57 the WS never left NY, both teams were from NY. I may be from NY, but if you look at this as a whole>>>HUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM

It may be a kids sport, but it is a beautiful and traditional game. I watched Beltran take Strike Three last year, and we were done, sometimes a good pitch can freeze the best hitting

#1 Wise Saying of post season play

" Good Pitching will contain good hitting"

I love this game like no other, if you dared BOO the Dodgers in Ebbets Field, you would need 3 guys named Vito, with no necks to get home in one piece :o

Hey Muddy, were those guys you rooted for multi-millionaires who changed teams every 2 years? I'm not a boo bird, but some players deserve it.

A couple expamples of today's guys I would boo:

BJ Upton not running out 'routine' fly balls? BOO!

Brett Myers punches his wife in the face? BOO!

Big Papi was sprinting LOL!Muddy where do you think the luxury taxes these "big market teams" pay goes. To the lesser teams. Tampa gets 20-30 mil a year, granted this doesn't solve salary issues but that money can get a couple of GOOD pitchers, and as we all know "good pitching will contain good hitting."

The Luxury tax, pushed by Steinbrenner and our current commish, along with guys like Boras and the Union was a way to get out of Revenue Sharing; which is a whole different ballgame, if you will.

Our commish was an owner at the time.

What I would like to see is the Minor league / farm system revert back to what it once was.Longevity of marquee playes staying put with one team and see Boras out and away from baseball, and TRUE REVENUE SHARING>>> NONE OF THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN :-/

By the Way: Thanks Pokey,Hookem and Daniel my Brother, and all I love debating Baseball, a pleasure to see so many here with knowledge and a love for our National Passtime.

Too many youngsters around here running around in soccer gear instead of baseball equipment these days

Posted

I do agree some sort of better revenue sharing or salary cap would be a good thing. Too many great players bouncing around, bout the time you start liking a player he's on another team. Agreed that Boras sucks and is bad for the game.Example: the circus known as Manny this season in Boston. For what it is worth this has been a great(and civil) debate. You wanna talk baseball anytime startup a new thread or p.m. me. Baseball is the greatest sport(see we can agree on something Muddy ;D)
