Books are expensive. I have no idea how much it would cost me other wise. I have 5 classes so that'd be 5 books all being science reference books. We've learned how expensive those are. Then most of my classes have atleast 5 lecturers so that'd probably be a few more books as they all favor different ones.

I kinda think that is a major reason they give us everything we need in a handout. Obviously those are perfect, but those are the powerpoints the teachers use. They do charge somewhere around $150 for all the copying which is cheap compared to what it could be.

But all the teachers do favors for their buddies. My psych teacher gives us everything we need on the Powerpoint notes. But we still had to buy two books. Both of which he highly recommended for our "success". He told us they were written by his friends at Brown after we had all purchased them. >:(

My last couple years of college I could really see a push by some professors to get away from textbooks.  They actually started siding with students on the outrageous prices of text books.

Of course I still had the professors that "REQUIRED" them and were "ESSENTIAL" to your learning.  All of them of course either wrote the book or had a hand in it.

Then there is the whole book buy back scam >:( >:( >:( ... "Oh sorry.  They are using a new version next semester."  Then come to find out all this new version has is a new pretty picture on the front.

I would say on average I spent around $750 on text books a semester.  I can't think of one time I walked out of the book buy back with over $100.

Man am I glad to be done with that crap. :P:)

The whole book thing is a scam.  I can see the need to change textbooks frequently in technology classes but English comp or math?

::)

BTW, Prof's providing notes needed for passing exams?

That's like a person using a walker because to they're too lazy to walk.

Whatever happened to the syllabus, instructing students how and what the test questions were going to be based on and then letting the students go about the task of studying the material so they know it?

Sounds like the test notes on-line thing is merely a crutch for those too lazy to do the work needed throughout the semester to pass tests.

Here at Appalachian State, we are 1 of 2 in the Country that uses a textbook rental system. I paid $87 to rent just about all of my books. Some teachers are weird and make you buy theirs though. I've only had to buy about 4 books in 2 years.

To add to that, I never do the assigned readings, so I never really need my books. Most teachers don't teach straight from the book anyway. When they hand out their powerpoints and study guides, the book is only a small study reference. There have been plenty of times when I found what I needed on Google.

Google is pretty useful if you don't have a book. Since alot of my classes are designed to be mostly review a few teachers direct us to wikipedia. They say sure there is misinformation but we should be able to figure that out by now. It's been kinda useful since some of the stuff is easier to understand on wiki that in the books.

Hook per our pm congrats again on the hard work and the scholarship. B

ased on your " spider response"  I've come up with a recommended class schedule for your first college sememster.

1) how to take a joke 100 ( for freshman )

2) reading comprehension 101 ( how to understand the meaning of what you read!  lol

3) philosophy 001  ( how to anticipate other theories on what something might mean ( Feud stuff )

4) Freshman orientaion tour - the really briallant minds like Einstein get so involved in thought that they can't remember where the cafeteria is

Looks like you are a couple of classes short. I'm sure a BassResource.com reader or 2 will make a suggestion ( pretty much can count on it )

All above suggestions are in jest of course

congrats again on the scholarship and the excellent work to date

OK members have at him errr it I mean
