Fisher of Men Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Now that we've started several "useless winteresk" threads, why not start another. In the "What do you call it?" thread, someone posted about "namebrand associated products" (i.e. Coke, Kleenex, etc.) Here are a few that I thought of: -Crescent Wrench (technically known as an adjustable wrench) -Skil Saw (circular saw) -Sawzall (Milwaukee tool reciprocating saw) -Xerox machine (I've mentioned to my middle school students about "xeroxing" something several times and they have no idea that I want to copy something) Can you think of others? frogtog Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 I was working on one the mowers the other day and I asked one of my helpers to give me a metric adjustable wrench, he went all through the tool box and told me he couldn't find one. So I told him just give me a regular one and I would make that work. ;D Does anyone know what a Sharp Shooter is? Quote

I didn't realize it was a regional difference until just this week. Quote

atx_newbie Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Fixing to--About to do something Ole--Oil Bear--Beer (as in: Give me a bear!) Other than that, where I come from the first syllable of every word just gets way overstressed, for example: Seegar--cigar Mackdonalds--McDonalds etc... And finally, this is the one most important to me: In the south you will likely never hear the word frat. Around here, we call them fraternities. Frat is the word that newspapers use to connote a negative image in articles about how evil fraternities are Quote
Super User Muddy Posted October 7, 2008 Super User Posted October 7, 2008 I don't know where you get that from. In the late 70's I was in a big 7 piece Horn band, that played R and B. Me, the bass, guitar and keyboard fellas had a 4 piece Blues band and we made a good living on the side playing FRAT Parties, That is what the fraterinites at Tulne,LSU< Ol Miss and Loyola put on their own flyers SAT NITE:: FRAT PARTIES no negativity there. Well I can't say this for sure, because I haven't done all the research I should, but the nationwide anti-fraternity PR wars hadn't been launched yet. Animal House hadn't come out yet and moms in the flyover states didn't think there was anything wrong with fraternities. Now though, there is a lot of negative PR because of a few bad apples, and the word frat has an immature, negative connotation. Here is an example: In my fraternity, we had an annual See-Saw-a-Thon that raised anywhere from $3k-5k for a local charity. The paper wrote an article, buried in the style section, about it, with the headline "Fraternity men See-Saw for Cause". The article praised our work. Two months later, one of my brothers commited suicide. This story ran front page the next day, under the banner headline "Frat Member Dead in Shooting". Maybe I'm just taking it personnally, but I can see quite a bias in those two headlines. Quote

Fisher of Men Posted October 7, 2008 Author Posted October 7, 2008 #2 pencil is what was always required on all school supply lists. I've always wondered if it's the most common pencil, why is it called #2?. . . and I've never personally seen a #1 pencil. RW- Devan or couch? (or sofa) It's couch in my house, although my wife's grandmother still calls it a devan. Speed, I didn't think about "q-tip". Keep'em coming guys. I didn't expect the "dialectual" terminology, but that's very interesting. Having never traveled very far north, I never quite realized there were so many differences. Quote
