bmadd Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Muddy- I am in need of your musical expertise. I love the piano and I have been looking for some good blues pianists. I like Dr. John and Memphis Slim but I haven't found the sound I'm looking for. I'm looking more something that's got a lot of soul and hurt behind it if you know what I mean. Got any suggestions? Super User Muddy Posted October 6, 2008 Super User Posted October 6, 2008 Man thats a hard one, they don't come more soulful , to me than Dr.John But you may want to experience these guys: Pine Top Perkins; from t Muddy Waters Band Henry Butler James Booker Jon Cleary Ray Charles Charles Burnett Jazzers Thelonius Monk Oscar Peterson Keith Jarret Art Tatum You should seek out a documentary, produced by a fella named SECOR: PIANO PLAYERS SELDOM PLAY TOGETHER, or a title close to that. He got 3 generations of New Orleans Paino plers Tuts Washington Professor Longhair(FESS):: Henry Roland Byrd Allan Tousaint he got them to play together and explain how Toots influenced Fess and Allan and Allan talked about being the youngest, particuarlly interesting is Allans love of Fess. Fess died during the making of the film, his funeral is documented in the film Toots was the first to take the Blues Boogies of fellas like Jelly Roll Morton( one of Jazz's founding fathers) and go to what was called Jump then Stride paino; whence most of blues , R&B and certainly rock and roll comes from. LISTEN TO TOOTS PLAY : SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET FESS; He is one of the originators of rock and roll; Allan Tousaint ,Jerry Lee Lewis,Little Richard,Fats Domino and Dr John all have done his tunes and talked about him as an influence. Listen to him on TIPATINA he talks about counterpoint playing as he puts in, left hand playing more than the bass line; it is the basis of Carnival/2nd line playing and it comes from him Allan Tousiant; One of the most soulful players you can find. He wrote the origianl version of SOUTHERN NITES; go to You tube it;'s there, a wuhole different feeling by it's author Allan is not only a player , he is a prolific writer: Yes We CAN CAN, WORKING IN THE COLD MINES, MOTHER IN LAW, JAVA AND SOUTHERN NITES are just a drop in the bucket of monster tunes he has written He also is a successful producer, along with Cosimo Mattrese; htey opened CYSAINT Studios and out of there would come hits by Fats Dominio.Louis Prima, the Dixie Cups,The Meters( House Band for the label),Fats Domino, the Neville brothers and many , many more He has been on the top 40 as a player/writer or producer over 120 times!! He even produced parts of The Stones and Beatles work. Give these 3 and all the above a try, if you don't find what you are looking for it has to come from someone else b/c this is all I know 8-) Fess learned Quote
bmadd Posted October 6, 2008 Author Posted October 6, 2008 Muddy I've spent the morning listening to your suggestions. That's some real good stuff. I really enjoyed Tipitina by Longhair and also Let Them Talk by Booker. I still didn't quite find exactly what I was looking for. I guess I could be more specific. I've got this sound going through my head that's slower and you know it's just built upon a lot of hurt. The stuff I found from a lot of the guys listed and from most guys I've found seem to have a faster tempo then what I am looking for. Quote

Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted October 6, 2008 Super User Posted October 6, 2008 I am no expert but maybe I could suggest a couple Ray Charles songs - Cry - Blackjack - You Don't Know Me - Come Back Baby - Drown in My Own Tears - A Fool For You - Here We Go Again I am no expert in the genre by any means, but I grew up listening to Ray Charles ... a lot. My grandfather used to (and still does) constantly play Ray Charles albums. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents in my younger years and Ray Charles has stuck with me. I think he has several songs that may fit the sound you are looking for. Those are just the ones I could come up with off the top of my head. Quote
