As a child of the 60s I'll tell y'all this on the night of the Homecoming students driving around will be considered probable cause and will be searched legally.

Enjoy yourselves and tell us here after Homecoming how y'all won  ;)

Schools seem to pre-occupied these days with rooting out the next disenfranchised student that's gonna walk through the door, guns ablazing, instead of teaching kids math, SPELLING, good grammar, geography and everything else they're supposed to cram down your throat in order to prep you for college.  Now they're going too far over the line.

It really was more fun in my day.  Despite the fear of the paddle, punishments by the school that my parents would've backed 100% and absolutely NO lawyers ready to sue the school for the slightest possible human rights violation,  we had fun.   ;)

Maybe you should contact the ACLU if you truly feel that your rights have been infringed. :'(

It should come as no surprise to you that students do not enjoy the same constitutional rights as adults. Even as an adult, there are limits on what one can do and the rights they have. The Bill of Rights does not guarantee unfettered freedom. I can't yell fire in a crowded building(1st) and I'm subject to being searched at an airport or ro***(4th).

Administrators have an obligation to maintain order at their school and prevent students from disrupting the learning environment. If an action is deemed to be disruptive to the learning environment or a challenge of authority you are going to get in trouble. As for searching students on campus, administrators are given a great deal of leeway and a reasonable suspicion, not probable cause, is all that is needed. While many have claimed a violation of rights, the courts routinely side with the school in order to preserve the integrity of the learning environment. As for cops off campus, I'd imagine they could find a reason to search you.

The best thing for you to keep in mind is that if you are not doing anything wrong than you do not have anything to worry about.

By summer of next year you will get to be treated like a big boy ;D ;)

The Constitution DOES NOT always apply the same way to juveniles as it does to adults. There have been cases tried involving students rights vs. administrator responsibility.

May be it wasn't about the material that was posted at all, maybe it was the fact, that alot of schools require prior approval for materials that are to be posted to have prior approval first.

Does sound like the administration displays poor management.

School is not responsible for what a kids doing on the street at night.

What happens on school property is different.

Another comment from the old farts;

As minors, you don't actually have "rights".

Just wait until you have a job, rent, electricity, gas, insurance, and a host of other things to worry about.  You will look back on this time of having your "rights" violated as the best times of your life.

Oh really?

I might have to disagree with that one. :-?

I may have misread your post but is appears your principal is trying to scare the student body into behaving by threatning them with the police. The principal does not write or enforce the laws of the state and I'm sure law enforcement is not going to violate the 4th ammendmant at the requestof the principal or anyone else.  The 4th ammendmant applies to everyone regardless of age.  Your employer may search your desk, computer or locker without notice if those items belong to the company.  But as far as just stopping a car to do a random search because the principal said so ain't gonna happen.  Or if it does happen, then I hope there was probable cause to do so or someone could be in BIG doodoo.

I don't know if you printed at school or not, but...

At my school you had to have permission to use computers period. Computers at school aren't for entertainment or political statements, they are for learning.

As also stated, most of the time permission is required for flyers, banners etc. Much like political and religious posts are not allowed here. It wouldn't be fair for you to post whatever you think while Joe Dirt isn't allowed to post pictures of his dog all over walls.

So much for "Free Speech" right?

We had permission from our English teacher to use a computer and we had permission from the councilor to use his printer.  We broke no rules, yet the administration jumped on our little piece of paper like a band of Nazis.

The principal at our school tried to threaten the police when we had our walkout.  My dad said the same thing.  They can't use the police to violate the 4th amendment.

It was not your "little piece of paper" that was jumped on, it was the attitude behind it.  Believe it or not, most adults are not as stupid as you might think, and your INTENT will get you in trouble many more times than your actions.

Just a little piece of advice.  Put your energy and efforts into something that is going to be meaningful to you in ten years.  I assure you, this will not be.

Your action (correcting a typo) by making this statement was correct.  Your INTENTION of the statement had a little bit of attitude behind it.

I acted because the principal lied to the student body.  I corrected his "mistake" by posting the Constitution on the walls.

Do you own the walls that you posted your paper on?  I would say no.  And the people who do own the walls said you could not put it there.  And now you are mad about it.

And I think the jackazz comment was uncalled for.

So did I, that's why I removed it.  That, I am sorry for.

I'm out.

Life is unfair sometimes...In this case the crappy kids ruined what you kids might call clean fun.Principle might have gotten a tip from the department and possible passed the word along to you guys.Sometimes fun clean fun can turn dangerous.

Hookem,i see where you are coming from, but also look at where they are coming from. There were other options to solve that instead of doing what you did.Coming from a younger guy it just seems like you were coming off to start trouble.Where as maybe you did or maybe you didn't(i don't know your whole intentions)....principle probably thought it was gonna cause an up rise in his school.Which he cannot allow.

If i would have did something like that at work i'd been fired...no questions asked.

I'd would have found somebody better suited to handle the situation.
