This is Homecoming week at my high school. Our school has this "tradition" of doing this thing called Homecoming Wars. This is when everybody chases each other around town during the night, throwing water balloons and shooting each other with water guns. It's all good clean fun.

Then you have a few "thugs" who take advantage of the situation. They throw eggs, toilet paper trees, and basically vandalize the city.

This kind of behavior is stupid and looked down upon by the "good kids" (like me ;D).

Anyway, our Principal made an announcement, telling the student body that it was illegal for students to have water guns, water balloons, eggs, saran wrap, etc. in their vehicle. He also said that the police would pull over any student that they saw riding around could search their vehicle without permission. Me and a few of my friends (who are against the vandalism 100%) are appalled at his statement.

So, we printed off a sign that said "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!!!" with a copy of the 4th Amendment:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. "

...and hung it in the hallway between classes.

People began stopping to read it, and before the day was over almost everyone had read it.

Well, the administration decides that we can't do this. They threaten to punish us. They even threatened to take our computer privileges away, which would consequently make us fail a few of our classes.

We're waiting on our punishment.

Apparently, the Principal's warped ego comes before the constitution.

I know how you feel, My school just terminated our right to paint up for football games.,They have nothing but diet drinks, and the food prices went up.

But from observation, the Constitution does not have much effect in today's society. It in itself is Unconstitutional.

This is odd, basically the same thing is happening at my school. The other day when I was sitting at lunch, the principle, who just walks around, grabs my passbook and says, "Lets see where your running too". I was thinkin, you @$$. He read EVERY PAGE. My girlfriend wrote some things in there that he shouldn't see, nothing bad though. His face got all red when he found my Economics paper, which I had drew a stick figure shooting a gun, not at another person, not at anything, just the stick figure and a gun. He threw my book on the table and went to the hall and made a few phone calls. I got in trouble for it but argued my way out. He thought I was a psyo.

But, the big thing is, he is doing it to our vehichles, our lockers, our gym bags, EVERYTHING. So we all argue with him when he tries to search something of ours.

Schools are not what they used to be, just this year we got locks on all the doors, security cams, and metal detectors.

I cant wait till he tries to search me, i'll recite the 4th amendment, then see what he does.

Oh yea, at least you and your friends tried to do something about it. If anybody tries around here they get suspended for like 7 days therefore you fail the classes you were in because we have the block schedule.

If you are truly concerned about this situation, tell the folks in your community who can do something about it.  Tell the superintendent of schools, attend a school board meeting and voice your concerns, or write a letter to the editor of the local paper.

Good luck,

Way to go hook!

Most of my efforts in high school outside of beer and girls was devoted to civil, and sometimes not-so-civil disobedience. Its good to throw their BS back in their faces whenever you can. If you're gonna site some resources and precedents, the constitution is not a bad place to start.LOL.

Most likely it was just a scare tactic, them knowing they couldnt follow through, but it sounds like you calling BS on them cant be allowed either, lol.

Hookem don't stop fighting, this should go to higher up or at least someone with pull that can help ya, treat it like the college professor thingy on forceing the students to write an essay his way, I think they e-mailed Fox news or O'Riley.com

try your local news out, that is wrong punishing you for exposing this and public should know about it.

Our councilor (who is basically the coolest "old guy" you could ask for)  told us that he got us "off the hook" at the Jr. High football game tonight.  The whole situation is settling out now, but we're still ticked off.

There is a line in society between what's right and what's wrong.  I'm tired of so called "adults" stepping over that line because they think they are in some kind of authority.

Hookem,

The "so called adults" you're talking about don't just "think they are in some kind of authority."  They are in some kind of authority.  Don't forget that fact, use it.  There is a chain of authority.  Someone has authority over those who have authority over you.  Go above the "so called adults" heads.

Look at what our school did to revolt against corruption.  I'm in the National Honor Society, but this is the only time I've gotten detention (for participating in the walkout).  This incident caused all 3 principals (the principal and the 2 vice principals) to resign.  I wrote the following story and it was published by a local website.

Right behind you!  The constitution isn't limited to those over 18.  It's all United States citizens.

The whole administration at my school is somewhat corrupt.  The school board is the Superintendent's "yes men".  There was even a scandal involving the school board election being fixed last year.

Oh well, I've only got a year left.

As one of the Ole farts on the site let me shed some insight on the situation

Homecoming Wars; good clean fun

Thugs take advantage of the situation break rules

Principle changes rules

Students find ways around new rules

You see guys setting boundaries, rules, or guidelines is a never ending process

Parents, principles, law enforcement set the boundaries, rules, or guidelines

Children, students, citizens find a new ways around the new boundaries, rules, or guidelines

Yea it kinda sucks you Homecoming Wars were hurt in the process but y'all should be mad at the thugs not the principle. I suggest sitting down with people in authority and find away to work the situation out. We ole farts have a saying You are either part of the solution or you are part of the problem.

Our situation went beyond the original problem.

That is outrageous. As an institute of learning, they should never punish you for doing that, UNLESS you are violating the school's computer policy by printing out hundreds of sheets of paper...(this is something my school had) In that case, they would be punishing you for wasting the school's paper, not for what was printed on it, which would make sense. If you only printed one copy, then that is ridiculous.

Also, remember that it doesn't require much to give a police officer probable cause to search your vehicle. Most jurisdictions recognize that an officers senses, exhibition of flight or furtive conduct, false or implausible answers to routine questions, presence at a crime scene or in a high crime area, past criminal conduct, and associations with known criminals can qualify as probable cause and allow an officer to legally search your car. I don't even know the rules if the activities take place on school property because I assume they could count that as trespassing and stop and search you just for being there.

No, you got in trouble because you thought it would be fun to be a smartass and show up those in charge.

The only rights you have in school are those granted by the administration.

I know High School should be fun at times. But you get out, look back, and say wow what happened, it hits you. High school is awful at preparing for college and making kids independent, self-motivated, and does nothing but baby you. The kids that were supposed to go places in life and had good rides have since dropped out and now work at the local Mobil station full time. So pay attention to things in class and worry about things like Homecoming second, because once you get out, none of those things matter.

Those are wise words.

You don't have to worry about me Tin, I'm going to turn out just fine.  If things don't turn out like I've planned, I can always drive up and freeload off you. ;D

Hook-sounds like if things don't work out there would be plenty of civil rights organizations/crazies that would love someone with your enthusiasm  ;)

True that. High School and High School administration is a joke. Don't let it get you, just keep your head up and look forward to college.

I bet you've never heard this before, but sometimes life just ain't fair.
